Well I'm from a working class background but please Angela Rayner having a go at Raab did herself and Labour no favours.

Jesus Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey.

First person to spot the use of the phrase "undeserving poor" wins a coconut.

I think it was Goebbels, in German though. I’ll need to check my reference books.

Let's only have posh MPs. They are so much better. (At everything including lining their pockets and the pockets of their mates

Morley, Onasanya, Vaz, Huhne, to name but a few from the Labour benches.

Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan and the cities of Manchester and Salford.

Just saying.

Joan Bakewell comes from Stockport. I prefer the way she sounds to the way Angela Rayner sounds. Not everyone speaks with a local accent, wherever they come from.

Urmstongran Thu 23-Sept-21 17:35:34

She sounds like a not too bright child and takes politics back 20 years to Brown’s obsession with left and right. No longer relevant in the modern world where a standard of living is more nuanced.

She’s spunky though and I quite like her passion.

Give over Urmstongran - she's got a real north-west (well I would say Lancashire) accent, not everyone from the Manchester area speaks like Liam Gallagher (a real Mancunian accent I think you would agree).

Stockport's in Cheshire.(Just saying.)

growstuff Thu 23-Sept-21 17:32:45

Hmm! I thought the usual criticism of Labour politicians is that they're all Oxbridge-educated Islington elites. Rayner certainly didn't sound like that.

Lol ?

I find “lol” ridiculous from someone accusing others of being uncouth. It matters not that’s she is not on tv

Casdon Thu 23-Sept-21 17:25:12

Have you read about her background Urmstongran? I found this old article of an interview with her in 2017, which gives much more insight.

She is an outstanding example of what somebody who comes from a very difficult background can do with her life. We all make mistakes, yes she had a baby at 16, but she has proved that success is possible whatever your start. She’s an excellent role model for young people from deprived backgrounds who want to go into politics, and we need more of them.

GillT57 Thu 23-Sept-21 17:24:50

'Lifestyle choices'? Do you think AR chose to be a child carer? I agree that she can be very emotional, but I don't have a problem with that, and I certainly don't think that having a BBC accent like Cameron makes you a decent or a particularly clever person, a fact we all now know. I think we have all become so accustomed to our politicians being white, middle class or upper class men in grey suits, that when somebody else bursts on the scene, all full of emotion, and heaven forfend, not only a woman, but a working class one, a Northerner, who has been on benefits and knows of which she speaks, then a lot of people are disturbed. Good. This country needs disturbing.

Is Stockholm syndrome or just inverted snobbery?

Lucca the only word used by Maudi is lol ....the word scum is Rayner’s.Plus Maudi is not on tv or in the HOC.

Thank you Lemongrove precisely.

I would far rather listen to Angela Rayner give a speech than listen to Boris's dreadful delivery - he can't string a sentence together without it being peppered with ums and ahs; he's not at all easy to listen to.

So would I. As for using unprofessional language, Rayner has some way to go before she challenges Johnson for that accolade.

Urmstongran Thu 23-Sept-21 17:22:50

She’s from Stockport. Gtr. Manchester. Stockport: famous for Palma Violets and 10cc.
?

My cousin attended Stockport grammar school. AR ‘s voice isn’t one I recognise from a Mancunian. I think she puts it on a bit. Appeals to the union barons I expect. And furthers the ‘you and me against the toffs’ narrative for the imagined flat caps and whippet owners north of Watford Gap.

Galaxy

Sorry I dont understand what you mean urmstongran, so if at some point in her life Jane had been in receipt of benefits that would make her less hard working?

No Galaxy. I meant JJ had an education and she says she worked very hard. Which Angela Rayner didn’t - she left school early and had a baby. I just meant there was no comparison academically. As for being on benefits AR’s lifestyle choices made that a necessity I should imagine.

lemongrove Thu 23-Sept-21 17:11:09

Ah, but Johnson uses a comb when it suits him, which he does when meeting world leaders.?
It’s one of those things...some people think speech doesn’t matter ( not talking accents here) when in the public eye, and some do.Neither view is wrong, it’s just opinion.

Lucca Thu 23-Sept-21 17:08:29

You couldn't see Angela Rayner representing the UK on the world stage if Labour (God forbid) ever got into power, yes The Telegraph got it right she's too common and that's nothing to do with her accent it's just how she presents herself and what comes out of her mouth remember when she called the Tory MP scum lol its just not what is expected of a member of Parliament in my opinion.

She called the Tory MP Scum lol”. Now there’s a classy turn of phrase

Alegrias1 Thu 23-Sept-21 17:06:43

Rayner.

Her name's Rayner.

Raab always looks bemused. It's because he has no idea what's going on.

Curlywhirly Thu 23-Sept-21 17:02:55

OMG - Angela Rayner is deemed not suitable to represent the UK on the world stage ? Well what about Boris!!! A scruffier PM would be hard to find, he's hardly statesman like is he?

lemongrove Thu 23-Sept-21 16:56:41

Why is it ‘hard to take’ Casdon ? I couldn’t care less. All I know is what I saw on tv at PMQ’s. Raab looked bemused but not rattled IMHO.

Yes Maudi that’s just it, I can’t see Raynor on the world stage but we may see a change in her if Labour get into power.
