Johnson asking Brazil for emergency food supplies

Although this I’d denied by the peers that be. The speculation is that it’s turkeys for Christmas. More suggestions about what else it could be. Is there a trade deal to be had here? Oven ready?

I don’t like turkey at all, but as so many people do like it, and can’t imagine Christmas without it can you picture the outrage if only a few were available? Before you know it, if Johnson ensures turkeys for all, the Conservatives will be ten points ahead in the polls.?

Will it go any better than his promises about last Christmas? That didn't go well did it, might be better if he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't jinx it again.

lemongrove Fri 24-Sept-21 13:39:13

We’ve done that one already the worriedwell ????

Brazil needs vaccines, I understand that the U.K. has more than it needs. Makes sense to trade vaccines for Turkeys ??

What will they do when he's no longer PM lemongrovehmm.

Celebrate?

I think the urge to eat turkey on Christmas Day would easily win out with voters Wheniwas

There seems to be quite a few on GN who believe that Johnson won’t stand in the next election, but what PM ever goes willingly and why would the Conservatives get rid of him if he’s still popular? It’s ages off yet though.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 24-Sept-21 13:18:15

If we get turkeys air-freighted from Brazil or anywhere else so far away, the Conservatives will lose points in the polls from anyone who takes climate change seriously. Or so I would hope.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 24-Sept-21 13:16:48

lemongrove, I can assure you that any time Boris Johnson loses his job, I will be delighted. I'm not a member of any political party, but am quite prepared to take a chance on Keir Starmer.

Alegrias1 Fri 24-Sept-21 13:14:57

Johnson no longer being PM is not dependent on there being a Labour government.

I really don’t know ?
They may have a party to welcome Starmer ( although quite a few LP members may not) but if Johnson wins they may be secretly relieved, who knows?

Wheniwasyourage Fri 24-Sept-21 13:03:31

If there are no turkeys available, we'll just eat something else. I don't think that counts as "ruining Christmas" as the more excitable elements of the press would have us believe. I would rather eat something else than a frozen, flown-in turkey from the other side of the world. What is it about people for whom Christmas has to be "perfect"? Ok, it's a different day for social and/or religious reasons, but there are many ways to celebrate it!

Alegrias1, please put me down for the All-Gone-Boris party whenever we can have it. I'll do some garlic bread with a real French baguette. grin

Have a party.

Can you imagine the sense of relief? It will be just like watching Trump getting kicked x 10 because it is our country being ruined.

Katie59 Fri 24-Sept-21 12:49:08

Farmers deliberately reduced numbers because there will be no workers to process them, so expect a shortage of fresh turkeys. My guess is that frozen turkeys will be imported to fill the gap and they could come from anywhere, provided transport can be found. Maybe airfreight, no shortage of planes or pilots

Casdon

We won’t have sufficient turkeys in the UK though Whitewavemark, as the farmers here didn’t know there would be a shortage, and it’s too late now to hatch and grow them in time for Christmas.

Because of staff shortage due to Brexit.

Everything goes back to that one little cross people put on their voting papers 5 years ago.

But we have sufficient turkeys in the U.K.!!

What we don’t have is the staff.

How on earth does buying in turkeys from Brazil thus ensuring our Turkey producers go to the wall helping the U.K. economy.

Ideological dogma is sending this country to ruin.

lemongrove Fri 24-Sept-21 12:26:43

?
I have to laugh on here sometimes....no matter what Johnson does there is someone ready to carp about it.
If he asked Bolsanaro to do an emergency deal if we need turkeys and there is a problem getting enough of them for the Christmas market then all well and good.
He would be hailed as the saviour of Christmas !
As for air miles, carbon output etc we already get plenty of corned beef from Argentina and various goods from around the world....it’s called trade.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 12:14:50

How much does that contribute to the carbon output?

Bloody hell.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 12:12:51

Some kind of food lacking in the U.K.

It has to be Turkeys, although how undercutting our own farmers by buying in turkeys and not ensuring the staff our farmers need seems a step too far to me.

Defecting on his own door step.

This is from the guardian (link above)

Bolsonaro made the claim about Johnson’s request after a meeting between them in New York earlier this week at the UN general assembly. The prime minister had stressed the benefits of the Covid-19 vaccine to his Brazilian counterpart.

However, speaking in his weekly webcast to supporters, Bolsonaro recalled that Johnson “wants an emergency agreement with us to import some kind of food that is lacking in England”, according to Reuters, though he did not specify what the product was.

It is understood the UK government regards the claim as untrue.

Some have speculated the food Brazil could be helpful with supplying is turkeys, after UK poultry producers said serious staff shortages caused by Brexit could mean there would not be enough of the birds to go around this Christmas.

According to the website Poultry World, Brazil is the world’s third highest producer of poultry – including chicken and turkey – and exported 12.5m tonnes to the EU last year.
