Just watching the news showing people queuing for petrol. Apparently ‘the supply chain is under intense pressure”. BP is prioritising motorways and major routes. Deliveries are unpredictable and the army may be involved.

More talk about changing visa regs temporarily.

Lucca you have no idea why folks need a 4 X 4

Unfortunately they have become status symbols. Townies don’t need 4x4’s. They are petrol guzzlers, clogging up the roads, taking over more than one parking space and driven increasingly by arrogant twerps. The people that I know that drive them are either farmers or horse owners that live in rural areas.

True but where I live I can honestly tell you the majority of them are driven by yummy mummies to drop the children ten feet from school and then to the gym or to park badly in Waitrose car park. It is a status symbol.

My BIL has one but was a farmer and they are often snowbound.

I filled up this morning.
Re comments about private transport, I have had my car for 10 years and clocked up 45,000 miles !
I walk when I can. I take the train if practical, but sadly I’ve seen on buses and trains most people (in England, not Scotland ) have abandoned mask wearing.

That made me laugh - perhaps he could walk the dog without taking the car ?

? he does usually but thought he’d combine the two.

I doubt he’ll be lucky tbh so the car will have to remain not used until the situation improves as we will not have enough to get to the petrol station otherwise.

I'm so disappointed in all the local morons panicking over petrol and clogging up the roads. The vast majority don't even need their cars - but are making things intolerable for those that do.

Here in London we have excellent public transport, plenty of cabs, an endless choice of home deliveries - yet, suddenly, everyone wanted to top up at the weekend. Panic buying indeed.

Our daughter has a Range Rover, so has left it at home and taken her husbands smaller car to work instead.

Good !! Far too many 4x4. Vehicles around.

DH is taking the car out to walk the dog and see if the petrol station is open. He can’t do more than one station as we will be running on fumes soon.

JaneJudge Mon 27-Sept-21 09:49:10

All the petrol stations are open along the A1 again today, the price has gone up though I noticed!

rosie1959 Mon 27-Sept-21 09:37:02

My son filled his range rover yesterday and got accosted by a lady saying he was selfish and to only put ,£20 in He is a self employed architect going out on site think he is at Heathrow this week he advised her politely that he needed to work and, £20 wouldn't do it for a couple of hundred mile trip

As Richard Murphy would say, unfortunately the market is not working as the Tories expect.

It’s a free market economy! Let the market decide! I thought this was exactly what the government should expect. Absolute chaos! My tongue very firmly in cheek.

?. I suppose this assumption is what informs their actions.

GillT57 Mon 27-Sept-21 09:13:20

I don't think we can dismiss everyone at a petrol station as a selfish panic buyer, although some undoubtedly are. Many people cannot afford to fill their car right up with a tank full, ours would cost in excess of £80 if we did that. Many people have to pop in and top up £20 at a time.

It would seem that a few posters are doing their best to add to the panic by the comments on these pages. That’s how it spreads, by doom laden posts on social media.Sometimes by people with anti- government agendas, or simple panicking for no reason.
The petrol queues wouldn’t have happened without media and social media hyping it all up in the first place.

*Perhaps more people should use public transport. It would be far better for the environment.*

Great idea, if your area has any!

I do realise that many do not have access to a good public transport service and access to a car is a necessity. Those that do need to make more use of it and mask up to protect others.

We seem severely lacking in common sense, exacerbating an already ongoing difficulty.

IMO, it’s selfish in the extreme to use private transport if there is an alternative. It goes to show how many people are wedded to their car and finding limitations so problematic.

Of course, the government could choose to govern and ration fuel supplies. Everyone would be up in arms about that but at least people would have some access to fuel.

On radio 4

EU lorry drivers union said “we will not go back to England to help them get out of the shit they created themselves”.

Yes he said shit.

Oh dear but are we surprised who can forget the scenes last Christmas?

MaizieD Mon 27-Sept-21 08:20:43

Whitewavemark2 the shelves are not all empty that is erroneous.

She didn't say that they were 'all' empty. You're just compounding the error, GG13

silverlining48 Mon 27-Sept-21 08:20:15

We were out on Saturday and passed a dozen garages most were closed and two had very long queues. We couldn’t stop then and didn’t want to join the panic but our car is now on the drive with about 30 miles worth of petrol left in it. We don’t have public transport here so
trying hard to keep calm
(and not panic).

All this has been caused by media hype and panic buying there are the same amount of tanker drivers as there were last week
Correct me if I am wrong but normal HGV drivers cannot drive a tanker they have to have a ADR license as well so it’s a specialist job

Yes this extra licence is required.

Lucca Mon 27-Sept-21 08:11:37

Well there are queues, sorry.
A friend who still works sets off early sent a whats app to us at 6.45 that a local filling station had just had a delivery so I threw a coat over my pyjamas and went to fill up. That will do me for a long time but I do need to drive to the dentist this week so couldn’t avoid it. The cashier told me they had petrol but were running low on diesel but that they always keep some back for the emergency services.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 27-Sept-21 08:05:51

Whitewavemark2 the shelves are not all empty that is erroneous.

Fuel has been delivered to filling stations, if as stated on the news buy a petrol station manager a station normally sells 8,000 litres on any given Friday and last Friday they sold 28,000 that is panic buying. How many cars are sat in people’s garages or drives with full tanks that will hardly be driven for the foreseeable.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 27-Sept-21 07:48:01

All this has been caused by government inertia and total incompetence.

Time and time again they are warned of impending crises - the latest is medicine shortage - and they do bugger all to deal with it until it is a crises and people are suffering.

We still have empty shelves, don’t forget.
