Petrol queues reported now on BBC news

Just watching the news showing people queuing for petrol. Apparently ‘the supply chain is under intense pressure”. BP is prioritising motorways and major routes. Deliveries are unpredictable and the army may be involved.

More talk about changing visa regs temporarily.

Rosie51 Try Thorpe Bay!

Seriously, I don't think that theory holds up. I live in a true blue Conservative constituency and I understand there are still dire shortages.

You do seem rather obsessed by Thorpe Bay, are you looking to move there?

No fear!!!

It was mentioned as a place which never seems to have shortages of anything.

growstuff I think that's the point, true blue areas will be thought to be safe and not need the 'protection' London is largely labour so wouldn't count. Do you think if I write to Boris and say I'll vote Tory next time he'll divert a tanker or two to my area grin?

Yes! Sorry! I wasn't thinking straight.

Haven’t read all the comments, so hope I’m not repeating but it seems to me;

Where ignorance is bliss,….,

regarding the whole situation.

If nothing had been leaked, I really don’t think things would have been so bad.

I shall ask AC when we go out to dinner this evening, they haven’t mentioned any shortages growstuff

I would like many of you posters saying how the petrol situation is fine where you live at least tell us where that is.
I am in south east and since last Thursday have seen the problems start. On Friday last week every petrol station had queues. Monday I went to the chemist to get a prescription and as I passed the local petrol station for the first time in a week it had several pumps open so I quickly went in suddenly remembering I only popped out for medical stuff.
Fortunately I had £20 pounds that is in glove compartment for any little emergencies so bought £20 pounds worth I was already on quarter tank. I have had a hospital appointment went and bought shopping and have also driven around since Monday trying to find a petrol station that still has fuel.
I have not been able to find any and my local petrol station told me they were expecting petrol yesterday but the tanker did not turn up.
My son is now coming up with conspiracy theories telling me that the government are doing this and trying to blame it on all those that wanted Brexit and now they have messed up the country hence food shortage, petrol, and big hike in gas and electric prices. I am getting past caring now as soon I will have to leave the car on the drive and get a taxi to the big supermarket if this does not get sorted.

growstuff Fri 01-Oct-21 16:25:46

And somebody will be along to accuse you of panic buying!

I sympathise. Fortunately, I was able to fill up first thing on Thursday morning and I haven't needed to go to many places, so I'll be OK for another couple of weeks.

However, I've read on my local Facebook groups of the difficulties people are experiencing. Many of them are carers, nurses or teachers and need to get to work.

One lady couldn't find any petrol, so went home. She was hoping to transfer some petrol from her husband's car for another trip to find petrol, but he was empty too. They went online and found a petrol station with fuel and asked a neighbour to go there and fill up a jerry can. Apparently, the neighbour was subject to all sorts of abuse and accused of panic buying.

But there aren't any shortages, are there? angry

And how the heck would you have stopped people from gossiping?

I wasn't the only person who had difficulties finding fuel last week. I hadn't a clue why three petrol stations were empty, but was curious. It wasn't until I went online and saw that other people were having problems and asking the same questions that I realised something was wrong. It was only then that the news broke that there were delivery issues.

Growstuff I would be scared to take any jerry cans just to store in the boot and I can imagine that those that do it are subject to abuse from others. All I want is to find somewhere open refill a bit and then keep away from petrol stations until this starts to ease. Looks like it could be taxis for me next week if I want to go anywhere.

There are no shortages anywhere are there all the cars on drives have got full tanks nobody is driving around looking
to fill up anywhere and joe public are making mountains out of molehills luckily I have been emptying contents of my freezer and getting rid of food all I want when I finally get to the supermarket is to find a load of empty shelves that will be the cherry on the cake.

That is our experience too, Growstuff, except that we started experiencing problems (diesel) from 13th Sept!

Drove across France today. Every petrol station open. No queues. Drive into London. Only one petrol station open with huge queue. France is in the EU single market with free movement. We’re not. Anybody who argues our fuel crisis is nothing to do with Brexit is a fool and a knave

Sounds s though taking the rail networks back into public ownership would be a good idea. Then wee wouldn't be paying all those profits to the foreign owners (generally foreign states).

Perhaps that's why rail travel in the EU is much cheaper than in the UK - their rail networks are partly funded by the the UK.

Jaxjacky Fri 01-Oct-21 20:11:49

Still closed garages down here in S Hants, local network will txt as tomorrow as delivery imminent.

ayse Fri 01-Oct-21 20:21:34

DH managed to buy £20 of diesel on Wednesday morning so we are all set and it will last us for a while. We were nearly on empty so as long as we’ve got enough for emergencies I’m happy. Fortunately I mainly use public transport except buying a heavy shop, like today.

Richard Trevithick 1804 the first steam locomotive, would be turning in his grave at the selling of our national railway system. Think they should all be renationalised, and owned by the country.

Enjoy ? My daughter had her wedding there.
They seem to have retained all their foreign service staff. ?

And for once- we agree. So would by OH's great Uncle, also a great British locomotive engineer from the 19C.

But please remind me- who broke up British Rail and sold to all and sundry- to many foreigners? Same with our energy, including nuclear, our drinking water, airports, healthcare, and so much more.

And as said before, if you are planning on really annoying your foreign neighbours and partners, and show that that you cannot be trusted, your word and promises and deals can't be trusted - I'd say it is a good idea not to sell them your essential utilities and services first! Or?

lemongrove Fri 01-Oct-21 21:08:54

If the railways are ever re-nationalised they will have to make a better job of it than they did before.....which is exactly why the railways were privatised in the first place, to make them run more efficiently.Neither system seems to work all that well.

lemongrove Fri 01-Oct-21 21:10:56

Bought petrol easily near Monmouth recently, no queues either.Think that things are settling down after all the initial panic buying.

Kali2 Fri 01-Oct-21 21:28:13

Has the shortage of drivers been resolved then lemong?

lemongrove Fri 01-Oct-21 21:37:07

It would never have been much of a problem if people had bought ‘normally’ in the first place.

silverlining48 Fri 01-Oct-21 21:58:15

It’s still not settling down here in the south east. We havnt been out for a week and can’t risk driving roundsearching/queuing as we have so little petrol left. Luckily no plans to go any distance, but need to get some soon.
