Just watching the news showing people queuing for petrol. Apparently ‘the supply chain is under intense pressure”. BP is prioritising motorways and major routes. Deliveries are unpredictable and the army may be involved.

More talk about changing visa regs temporarily.

The media have a lot to answer for; their news coverage of a handful of BP stations running out temporarily has created a mass panic. Had they kept out of it BP and the rest could have probably ridden the storm with minimal disruption

Exactly, but hey ho let’s show pictures of closed petrol pumps whip the gullible general public into a panic buying frenzy and there you have it…

More empty pumps, more panic buying…

Round and round it goes

What I find worrying is the total lack of contingency by the government.

Fuel is one of the most important chains to be kept going as without it everything grinds to a halt.

Surely as furlough comes to and end, school restarting and people returning to the office, it would be obvious to a toddler that fuel consumption would rise and therefore we would need a delivery service to the pumps.

What the hell is this government doing? Apart from going on holiday.

Can always rely on whitewave to make any subject an excuse to slate the government

Never mind loo paper or petrol - this might be the real danger gringrin

If the CO2 shortage persists that will no longer be a joke grin

Can the British endure the 'teething' troubles of no turkeys, no petrol and no beer?

MaizieD Sat 25-Sept-21 11:43:38

If you think someone is an idiot, just say so.

Can't do that, Alegrias, it's against the T & C... Insinuation is safer...

Aptly named reporter.

^I don't think the Tesco delivery driver is being quite truthful either^

growstuff Why wouldn’t he be truthful? What advantage would there be to him? One imagines he was describing the issue based on his experience, just as posters on here are doing. In most areas, daily deliveries are expected at Tesco, if they are to outlets not linked to Esso. Asda, too, seems to be coping.

I have no idea. Maybe he was being loyal to his company.

"Esso owner ExxonMobil also said a “small number” of Tesco Alliance petrol forecourts have been impacted by disruption to petrol deliveries."

Tesco petrol stations have been mentioned in a number of sources.

My local Tesco was certainly affected before the news broke and the frenzy started.

Who you got in mind MerylStreep?

Do tell.

Or actually don't bother, because I for one am fed up with the snide comments about other posters. If you think someone is an idiot, just say so.

We all filled up fuel in my family. one DD is a social worker and needs her car for visits, one DD is a student nurse so also needs her car The other DGD goes to school several miles from home so they need a car daily. This isn't panic buying but essential travel.

if BP had kept quiet and said there was a shortage of drivers not fuel there would not have been the queues. my local Tesco yesterday had queues for nearly a mile which was blocking not only the road to tesco but also the slip road off the duel carriageway most sitting there with engines running wasting fuel, i had to drive in the wrong lane then cut across traffic just to get into tesco to do my weekly shop i was not going to queue for petrol which i am getting low on and need to fill up befor my hospital appointment next friday so will try to fill up early next week

If people used their brains instead of taking every single word quoted by the media, or even politicians, there would not be such a problem. However it seems as if acting like suicidal leemings, if one does it the rest follow! When did the general population give up thinking for itself!!

MaizieD Sat 25-Sept-21 11:28:16

Unfortunately the BBC sky daily mail and most of the media seem to be running the country at the moment..

Well, at least somebody is, because the government sure as hell isn't.. wink

4allweknow Sat 25-Sept-21 11:24:24

It's the toilet roll scenario all over again! Greed, greed, greed.

Nagmad2016 Sat 25-Sept-21 11:21:28

In my opinion the media causes all this panic. I topped up on Thursday and all was calm. Suddenly, there are massive headlines that we will run out of fuel, and the public go berserk to fill up. I've seen pictures on social media of cars with 7 or 8 fuel containers to fill up as well as their vehicles. The garages should stop this. The media has a lot to answer for in these situations. It is about time people in this country pulled together instead of blaming the government for everything. Whichever party is in power, we have this 'we told you so' scenario, it's quite pathetic.

It’s going to be a fun winter.

And yes there is an EU shortage but I’ll be interested to see how many HGV drivers take up the opportunity of a temporary visa.

Taxis are almost impossible to get here already (a lot of the taxi drivers in this city were recruited from Romania - unsurprisingly they have left). Buses keep on not turning up. I have quarter of a tank left so may not be going very far soon. I am hoping that the forecourts will be quiet early next week and I’ll be able to fill up then.

Think it’s a little naive to think that this has nothing to do with Brexit. The French press certainly sees it as a consequence

Ashcombe Sat 25-Sept-21 11:14:17

There's a shortage of HGV drivers in Europe too, so no Brexit effect there.

Sparklefizz: This is true up to a point for many reasons:-

westcountrybylines.co.uk/twenty-reasons-why-there-is-an-hgv-driver-shortage-part-one-1-10/

Here in France, we have no issues with fuel or food deliveries.

JaneJudge Sat 25-Sept-21 11:13:36

I do feel like I should't use what little fuel I have though

Alegrias1 Sat 25-Sept-21 11:11:44

There's no need to ration petrol. That will just make it worse. Let all the worried folk fill up every receptacle they have in their house and then the rest of us can get back to buying as normal.

(growstuff and others who are filling up as usual, excepted from my criticism, obviously)

Theoddbird Sat 25-Sept-21 11:08:16

Well...once all these stupid people have unnecessarily filled their tanks to bursting they will have to use it before they can do it again. This will give petrol stations time to fill their tanks again and hopefully ration.
