Labour party conference, is no-one else interested?

tbh I expected a few posts about what's been happening other than the ones about Angela Rayner's language but none have appeared. So what do you think of the show so far? Andy McDonald's resignation, does this signal open warfare from the left? Internal party reforms despite Momentum's objection, does this signal the end of the left's influence? Starmer's declaration that winning the next election is more important than focusing on party unity. Is this a sign that the Labour party is moving on from the Corbyn era and Brexit? Some suggestion that the left wing might start a new party? So where do you think the party is heading?

Another thread gives uGOV poll,

Well, the left wing of the party are now undermining the party on a regular basis. Is that acceptable?

trisher Mon 04-Oct-21 07:42:00

There are over 200 Labour MPs I think most of them would do a better job than Starmer. I can't believe anyone left or right wing thinks it is OK to have people working for the party undermining that party and trying to influence GE results. If it had been left wing activists there would have been an outcry. But Starmer shelves an investigation and reinstates the culprits. And he's a suitable leader!!!???

Anniebach Sun 03-Oct-21 22:09:35

trisher Aitken was an Etonian, his grandfather a Baron, all
the far left have a problem with.

I too would be interested in your choice of leader in place of
Starmer.

She was an embarrassment getting facts and figures wrong on the radio ( or was it tv). She was an amazing ground breaking politician and she’s a wonderful constituency MP. But why is she so determined to do everything she can to prevent Keir Starmer from becoming PM? trisher. Who do you want to lead the Labour Party? You obviously hate Keir. No one is telling me what this great alternative to Keir Starmer is.

trisher Sun 03-Oct-21 20:51:36

Some of my very close friends have political views I disagree with, doesn't stop me being friends with them.
The first black MP. Diane Abbott has stood up for her constituents for many years. If she is an embarrasment to the party, the party has lost its way. She's probably made fewer gaffes than our PM and she has had health issues (what's his excuse?)

Anniebach Sun 03-Oct-21 20:39:05

I always found it strange that she chose Jonathan Aitken for
her son’s Godfather, he was all she has been so critical of,

Iam64 Sun 03-Oct-21 18:38:53

I try to avoid criticising Diane Abbot because she’s been the subject of awful abuse over a long period. But, here goes. She’s a spent force, an embarrassment to the party whenever she’s given air time.

Dianne Abbott slags Keir off on a daily basis on her Facebook page….

Well I've just looked at her Facebook page. Yes there are criticisms of Starmer particularly about what would happen at conference. There are also posts about Black History month Angela Rayner and many other things. But hey it's Diane Abbott she's always good for a target.

Of course. She was complaining about Keir writing in The Sun. But it was ok for her to sit next to Portillo on the Andrew Neil late night show a few years back…..

I voted for Corbyn even though I didn’t particularly like him. It’s called loyalty to the party.

There are lies, damned lies and then the newspapers. Nobody has named them.

Perhaps Diane has never fully moved on from their camping
holiday in France .

Unless they are 3 far left feeding the Daily Mail

Casdon Sun 03-Oct-21 13:31:29

If Labour MPs do defect to the Tories, it’s resoundingly NOT a vote of confidence for the Left of the Labour Party is it, it’s quite the opposite.

MayBee70 Sun 03-Oct-21 13:15:00

Strange that the right wing press didn’t publicise the decent, honourable Conservative MP’s that either left the party or were pushed out prior to the election.

Anniebach Sun 03-Oct-21 12:22:58

It’s in the newspapers, then it must be true ?

Wonder why they want to leave a party which is now compared
to the Tory party by the far left and why they didn’t leave the
Labour Party when it was controlled by the far left

It’s been in several Sunday Newspapers and on the news Anniebach not sure if they have been publicly named . I think they are waiting to see what happens at the Conservative Party Conference this week.

I doubt if she could, Annie, it's a story from one of the RW Sunday papers. No names named.

It strikes me that if this anonymous MPs would be willing to defect to the tories they couldn't have been particularly 'Labour' in the first place. So no loss.

Grany Sun 03-Oct-21 09:52:40

Three labour MPs plan to defect to the conservatives?

Doesn’t it say everything about the Parliamentary Labour Party that Keir Starmer leads, that when its members plan to defect, they decide to go to the Tories?

No self-respecting Labour Party member would ever consider joining the Conservatives. Not if they ever had true Labour values – because Conservative values are poison to traditional Labour beliefs.

These are people who are said to be despairing at Starmer’s failure to close the Conservatives’ lead in the opinion polls – despite the fact that his, and their own, attacks on Labour’s traditional, socialist, membership are directly responsible for this failure.

MayBee70 Sat 02-Oct-21 10:57:09

They actually had some very good policies.

effalump Sat 02-Oct-21 10:53:00

Oh if only Screaming Lord Such was still alive. I would vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party.

If the left is tiring of Labour, where should it put its energy next?
Zoe Williams

Not all change comes from Westminster. Meaningful politics is about persuasion – which happens at grassroots level

if you disagree with the Conservative government; if you find its worldview toxic and its agenda void of anything nobler than self-enrichment; if you take the climate crisis seriously and can’t stomach other people living in abject poverty as the mysterious but God-given price of being modern; if you look at Labour and see a party contorting itself into rightwing frames, then pleading with voters to give it a chance, because underneath it’s just a bit nicer, where do you put your energy at that point?

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/oct/01/left-labour-change-westminster-grassroots

The far-left militants are not going to bring about change because they cannot get into power. They cannot complain that the Labour Party do not support them. That is simply because it appears, the members do not support their methods or their aims. They are democratically allowed that choice.

There are times when you can beat people, with words or actions, into submission, but this does not appear to be one of them.
