As if this was somehow unusual. I commented that it wasn't 'unusual', it was standard convention at times like this. I don't see that that was in any way 'disrespectful'. It was at something of a tangent, but, then, so was MOnica's excellent post.

I hope it isn't too. The 'respects' thread is the one that was initially opened. This one is different.

Respectfully MaizieD this thread is referring to a U.K. MP, who was violently murdered 32 hours ago.

So yes I would hope and expect posts to be respectful.

The mention of the suspect's heritage is quite correct, because this affects by whom and how this crime is investigated.

No it's not. He could have been a white British convert to Islam. He would equally have been investigated by the Counter Terrorism team. His origins are not relevant to the news that he is the 'suspect'.

It is being investigated by the Counter -Terrorism Team, and is being treated as a terrorist incident which may be linked to Islam extremism, and the threat level is regarded as 'substantial.'
This information is in the public domain, therefore no reason to conceal it and no reason for people being criticized for commenting, should they wish.
After expressing horror at the attack the next question is inevitably -why?
As for taking down yet another thread.

Please posters, there are several GN members who have known Sir David over the years he was an MP me included.

Please do not have this spat on a thread which should be honouring him.

Chestnut there was just no need to name any individual on a thread that is about this horrific incident, it was designed to introduce party politics in the thread to do that.

This is where it started Chestnut. It was gratuitous to mention a politician of another party in this thread.

And my disappointment that we straight away dive into condemning one political party over others and reminding everybody that the suspect probably wasn't born in Britain.

I don't think anyone has condemned any political party, have they? It's just that the use of inflammatory aggressive language towards politicians (whether in Parliament or on Gransnet) is not pleasant or advisable. It stokes up hatred, whether online or not, and this feeds into a general belief that politicians are people to be reviled.

Well said, Monica, and those who have amplified your original points. My own working experience of MPs is that they were always working hard for their constituents.
