Let’s hope she is able to put her feet up between now and going up to COP in Glasgow.

I don't think she should be going to the COP. Why not send Prince Charles instead? With all his green credentials, hugging trees and whatnot..

Prince Charles and Prince William are already going to COP, not sure about their wives.

The Queen will never abdicate. What she is doing is handing more and more stuff to her children (not Andrew) and grandchildren. The crown will pass to Charles and not William. That’s how it works here. Charles won’t abdicate either although I don’t think he will be a popular King, especially with Camilla by his side. Of course the Palace aren’t telling us the whole story about the Queen’s health. Why should they? It’s personal. I do think she has looked bright and happy since Philip’s death. More relaxed somehow. He obviously wasn’t a well man for the last few years of his life so his death could have been a relief in some ways for the Queen.

I simply don't regard the Queen as the single driving force some seem to imagine her. I think her image is carefully cultivated and supported by a team of civil servants whose sole purpose is to ensure that we are fed only the desirable bits of information about what goes on in the RF. So because she is seen as the acceptable face of monarchy (and is even loved by some) she is supported and as little negativity as possible is allowed to escape.
She is 95. A lot of 90 year olds can be dressed up and presented to the public, can shake hands smile and have brief conversations with visitors. If she is actually up to the rest of what her job is supposed to entail I very much doubt. I suspect the legal bits have been done by her assistants for some time. Charles might have been consulted occasionally but as he's a little bit "hippy" I don't think he would be trusted entirely. She may not be willing to abdicate, but possibly others are complicit in that.

Totally agree with this. The ‘job’ of being monarch is not a job as we all think of it, so you don’t retire from it.

Charles will become King when his mother dies. Fact.

William will take over when Charles dies. Fact.

Charles will have big shoes to fill as the Queen has been monarch for so long, and unless he lives a very long life, he cannot hope to be on the throne for 30 years say.

But that’s just how it is.

I shall be very sad when the Queen dies, I was born in Coronation year, she has been a constant all my life, quite comforting in this ever changing world.

I understood that she had gone if for some preliminary tests. The last time she was in hospital in 2014? was with gastroenteritis.

I think for many people she represents a sort of stability, so if there are signs of something being wrong the world is suddenly a little less stable. I was 11 when she came to the throne, but for many of our citizens she has always been there, a symbol of continuity and, in a way, safety. You don’t need to be an ardent monarchist to feel this way.

But other countries' monarchs retire. Even the Emperor of Japan, whose father was considered at the time of his reign to be a deity.

Why not us?

Not really a Royalist but you can't fault the Queen, she has never put a foot wrong and being very loyal to this country and the crown. So wish her well and speedy recovery.

I dare say the Dutch thought Queen Beatrix was very special too.

I'm sure the Dutch thought she was just fine ?, but nowhere near as special as our Queen, admired around the world (perhaps more so than many in the UK admire her).

I think she is of that generation which felt duty comes before pleasure and a promise made should not be broken.

I wish her well, she has been there as a symbol of stability since I was a small child.

I think the Queen's initiatives about forests and rebuilding give her enough credentials to attend as our representative H of S.

I've said this before so sorry for repeating myself. This is what she said, on her 21st birthday: I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong. She didn't promise to be Queen till she died. Maybe the best service she could do is let the crown pass to someone more energetic than she is, who she could guide in his first years as monarch.

Exactly Charles should have taken over a good while ago she could have guided ….she pledged to serve the royal family and the country for life and she could have done that from a back seat
She’s a very very old lady and should be able to put her feet up and have a quiet few months (or years) but I don’t think she could live with someone else holding the reins
All the people who claim to love her don’t you want her to be calm and quiet and comfortable in her last days

Of course I want her to have a peaceful old age however, she herself, took the sacred oath very seriously indeed and will carry on to death like her father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandmother etc etc. She's an old fashioned monarch
