to protect our own...

whilst they allow raw sewage to enter our waterways!!!

And then some here say that the EU is being petty. WTMF!

From 7 January, all those waters you know and love, Evian, San Pelegríno etc etc will be no more in the UK - Eustice has sent notification to this effect to the EU.

^We are not talking about floating plastic bottles... or ducks. We are talking about sh*t, urine, used condoms, wet wipes, etc.^

Whilst the thought of wet wipes, used condoms etc is very unpleasant, if we think about this, the seas are full of sh*t anyway from all the marine life which defecate in the sea.

Whilst I think we should be doing our best not to increase the amount of urine and faeces in the oceans I am more concerned about plastic.
Biological waste degrades or provides food for marine life but far more toxic wastes are dumped in the oceans which should concern us greatly.

Totally, but are you saying that because we should be very concerned about other toxic waste- it makes it ok to dump tons of cr*p, urine, wet wipes and condoms - on top of? How does that make sense.

Of course we should be very concerned about toxic waste of any kind, and some probably much worse that the above. But CURRENTLY, here and now, this is what is happening, right on the UK's doorstep and by the UK - which will fast pollute all our neighbours too.

The bad faith from some is just unbelievable, and intolerable.

Maremia Fri 29-Oct-21 08:28:41

Yes, biological waste provides food for marine life, just as it did for the Whitstable, been there since Roman times, oysters. Anyone rushing to partake of these now? Can't understand why so many Folk on here keen to argue that it's okay to foul our own waterways and systems, reduce hard earned purity standards, and become a turd world country (thanks Petera) just because it's bad elsewhere.
Back to the bottle trade embargo. We ain't seen nothing yet. The real (BREXIT) deal begins on January 1st.

Absolutely, Callistemon ?

Gibraltar? Now that does ring a bell.

But we are NOT talking about Gibraltar here- as said, perhaps look at a map before commenting next!

I don't think I will even begin to reply here Maizie.

Of course you won't. You never do.

How bizarre as I never encountered you before. Unless you have been re-incarnated???

We are not talking about floating plastic bottles... or ducks. We are talking about sh*t, urine, used condoms, wet wipes, etc. The Channel is only 34 km wide at one point, about 20 miles- and will quickly and easily dangerously pollute fish, and even more so lobsters, crabs, mussels and oyster beds on North coast of France, from Pas-de-Calais, Normandy and Britanny, and the North coast of Spain, and Holland and Germany.

Did you study Geography at same school as Raab, perhaps.

^Do you think things end up in the Channel and stay there, Kali2?^

I suspect our sewage will have been considerably diluted by the time it's worked its way round Portugal and Spain and reached Gibraltar, Zoejory.

Indeed. And it will be mingling with all the sewage from southern Spain. They have been fined many times by the EU for allowing untreated sewage into the sea.

Have you ever heard of the plastic ducks?

Fascinating story. For decades they floated all over the world after falling off a container ship. Currents.

We have a children's book about that, I think it was written by Eric Carle.

I imagine it won't be long until the French, and then other EU countries, begin to sue the UK for polluting their waters, fish, shellwish, etc- fist France as the Channel is very narrow- the tons of sewage being poured into it will not stop in the middle- depending on currents reaching Spain , Germany, Holland and others quite soon.

Could you explain how someone is going to differentiate between our crap and what is being discharged from these ships laying off Gibraltar?

Plus the Cruise liners, the ferries, private boats. Not going to be an easy task, is it? ?

hmmm I was talking initially about the Channel.

Scones Thu 28-Oct-21 20:32:10

Casdon I did see the chart you posted and I'm glad it's not so bad in Wales, just sad it happens at all there or anywhere. Agree with you wholeheartedly about the Daily Mail. Agenda and division pointed in all directions.

varian Thu 28-Oct-21 19:38:22

I've never understood why anyone living in this country should buy bottled water.

The only time I've done that is just before a flight when my own tap-water has been confiscated, but now airports usually allow you to take an empty bottle through security and fill it up from a drinking fountain.

I do drink a lot of water, but always tap-water, except for the odd bottle of fizzy water (usually supermarket own brand) that I might occasionally buy for guests.

Casdon Thu 28-Oct-21 18:45:36

Interesting timing too, it would suit the Mail to post a story about a failure in Wales of course, fits their demographic.

Casdon Thu 28-Oct-21 18:43:00

Did you look at the comparison chart I posted though Scone? Not saying Welsh Water is perfect, just very substantially better than the other companies according to the evidence.

I’m so glad I live in Wales, sewage dumping is far less of an issue here - Welsh Water is not for profit and answers to Welsh Government. Not sure how it works for Scotland.

Sadly it's an issue everywhere.

Has Eustace actually banned EU mineral water? I think not. My understanding is that from January 7th EU companies cannot use their EU accreditation but will have to apply for accreditation from the UK. This is not the same as a ban.

I believe this topic was first raised because political groups were criticising the sewerage system and wanting water authorities to take responsibility for over spills during flooding. It was publicised by saying we would all be drinking filthy river water especially as mineral water was banned. There is plenty of mineral water in this country and EU water is not banned. It was a way of grabbing the headlines. I guess rivers and sewerage is what we should really be discussing.

Worth listing your comments again Avalon ?
As you correctly say, it is not banned....but posters rarely bother to read all the comments and just jump in believing it to be.?
I can’t see why people want to waste hard earned money on bottled water, but if they do, fine, their choice, and when these
EU country ‘bottlers’ have their accreditation from the UK then their products can flow as normal.

Parts of Surrey were told not to drink the tap water as something had gone wrong in the processing

Katie59 Thu 28-Oct-21 16:56:44

It is said that the Thames is flushed 7 times before it reaches the sea, glad ours comes from the Severn which gets much more diluted with rain in the Welsh hills.

No-one is asking you to be ashamed- but it is fair enough to say this is baffling.

I was baffled when my American DIL stayed with me. She only drank bottled water when here, she would get a new bottle from the fridge, drink a little then put it down. When she wanted another drink she got a fresh bottle saying that the water in the original bottle was stale! She went through about eight bottles a day, drove me mad, especially as I was paying for it!

After a day or so, I went round collecting up the used bottles and topping them up with tap water then putting in the fridge. She never noticed that the seal was broken on the bottles so was quite happy. I think it was that she wanted to drink very cold water straight from the fridge rather than that the water tasted stale.
