Is it just me or is she increasingly coming across as a brat having a permanent tantrum.? She has no positive ideas, merely demands to stop doing just about everything while the media hangs on her every intemperate word? Blah blah blah…..

Well sadly it's not just you, from some of the posts on here. But it's not me. I've nothing but admiration for this strong, brave, intelligent, articulate young woman who's inspired millions.

Me too. There have been 14 COP conferences and still governments are just talking. I hope there will be action to reduce the human impact on this planet. She has certainly raised awareness, so good on her.

I have very mixed feelings about Greta. I think the world sometimes needs people like her to shake us up to get things done. I admired her at first. But I do think it's gone to her head a bit. She is young and idealistic, and rather naive.
I don't see how she can possibly understand the complexities
involved in balancing the urgent need for action with the necessity to keep us all fed and in employment etc.
But she certainly has made us all more aware of the need for change, hasn't she.

That's possible. Though I had always assumed this was the UK site?

Some of the young people of my acquaintance are now using the term as Americans do.

She’s 18. Could easily still be at school. I was.

Oh yeah! Just remembered the caption inside those Greenpeace cards: "Have a Cool Yule" ☃️☃️
So good.

So Greta will achieve in 3 years what Greenpeace haven’t been able to in 50 years?
Right okay.
I’m reminded of the quote. - ‘overnight success’ usually takes about 10 years.
How insulting to all the environmental activists who have worked tirelessly for over 50 years that you put your faith in one 18 year old woman.

No, not at all. A logical fallacy on your part and the conflation of two different posts.

Well Calendargirl and Smileless2012 beat me too it.

But in all honesty, its not just you. Lots of people who don't really grasp the situation really don't like being shown up by a teenager.

She is annoying. I like her smile

As for the "no positive ideas" nonsense, try googling the Greta Thunberg Foundation.

Me too!

Does anyone else remember those brilliant xmas cards Greenpeace sold one year? They were of snowmen carrying placards that said "Snow people against global warming". I bought loads and sent them to friends and relations.

Real life challenges/experiences can be so much more educational than school.
BTW, if she lived in England, she would no longer be in school anyway, but I don't know how the education system works in Sweden.

Perhaps, as in America, tertiary educational establishments are called school too.

I think she is a bit of a victim of the media - a few years ago, when she was even younger, she made an impact because she was saying how much she cared about the environment and her youth and articulacy made her stand out. But the media have sucked her in and she is too young to deal with this in a sensible way.

But to her credit, she does not pretend to be a climate expert, and I think she is right to stand up for what she believes in - but that it has all got a bit out of hand for her.

I remember Greenpeace campaigning in the 70’s.
Worrying about the environment is nothing new.

So 50 years and no progress then?

Thank God for Greta.

I agree, the ‘grownups’ need to be doing rather than saying. The Queen said that, and she’s obviously in a good position to make a statement like that, but not this girl.

Is that the same Queen who flew from Windsor to Sandringham for a weekend break?

DiscoDancer1975 Sat 06-Nov-21 18:38:46

No, it’s not just you. I find her extremely irritating, and am trying to think how people would have reacted when we were that age. I’d have been sent to my room by very embarrassed parents.

The only other thing of course, is she being exploited by the adults in her life?

She needs to get on with her school work!

Alegrias1 Sat 06-Nov-21 18:38:16

Who do we think has had the greatest impact on climate change awareness?

Greta with three years activity? Or Charles in 30(?) years of driving an Aston Martin powered by wine?

Can’t stand Chris Packham either.

If he knew you, he might say the same. Then again, no, he doesn't come across as someone who would say nasty things about a person he knew nothing about.

lemongrove Sat 06-Nov-21 18:33:52

Chris Packham has Aspergers too.
David Attenborough doesn’t.
DA has been crusading for climate change for a long time, as has Prince Charles and many others, before GT was a twinkle in her Father’s eye, as they say.

Some disgusting comments on here and has really surprised me even the title and the opening post is disgusting

You haters and deniers should all be ashamed of yourselves
Grow up, she’s a strong young lady with strong opinions who has revved up a whole generation, she’s a Joan of Arc character you should be applauding her as you would happily do if it was David Attenborough or Chris Packham

Good posts Scones and Litterpicker

It is a different world now.

I volunteer at our local carbon challenge project (supported by Keep Scotland Beautiful) which has taken over an empty shop and where townspeople have a chance to get involved, discuss, and get advice about how to reduce their carbon footprint.
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/climate-change/climate-challenge-fund/

So far there is a tool library, a corner for bike repairs, sewing groups where upcycling is done and dressmaking. There is now a big apple juice press and while I was making apple juice a wiseguy shouted "why aren't you marching in Glasgow?"
I said "because we are here, doing this"
