Is it just me or is she increasingly coming across as a brat having a permanent tantrum.? She has no positive ideas, merely demands to stop doing just about everything while the media hangs on her every intemperate word? Blah blah blah…..

They belong to the Crown not HM personally and are managed by the Crown Estate.

Didn't Lizzie want her land excluded from Scottish legislation re climate change rules? Oh and hasn't she been profitting from SELLING licenses for seabeds ? Apparently they are HER seabeds !!

chris8888 Sun 07-Nov-21 12:49:56

I think she is a great role model for the younger people and hope she inspires real change.

Alegrias1 Sun 07-Nov-21 12:48:16

I think anybody who thinks the Queen's contribution to the debate is anything other than ceremonial is deluded.

Iam64 Sun 07-Nov-21 12:43:43

‘This will have had more impact than a ranting teenager is saying that is really about getting attention and self promotion’

I agree, anything the Queen says will have impact, especially on the rare occasions when she makes a statement that could be criticised as being political. I’m not criticising the Queen. I was pleased she spoke as she did.

Where is the evidence that GT is all about getting attention and self promotion. ‘Ranting’ ?

Alegrias1 Sun 07-Nov-21 12:39:29

Actually, what the Queen was complaining about was leaders not making their minds up about whether to come or not.

And if anyone thinks that's more important that a mobilised youth, you are mistaken, IMO.

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 12:38:25

It’s a black and white message ( global warming) but unfortunately can’t be addressed by a black and white answer.
It can’t all be stopped right this minute.
That doesn’t mean that as much as can be done right now, shouldn’t be done.

VioletSky Sun 07-Nov-21 12:37:24

Yes, a subsection of the Internet has been bullying an autistic child for 4 years, it's heartbreaking to watch.

She is an incredible young lady and doesn't deserve it.

Someone had to stand up or there won't be a world soon no matter what people think.

I'll say this again - Her Majesty who thinks that the week after telling the world that we all need to work together to save the planet, flies from her big house in Windsor to her big house in Sandringham for the weekend?

I'll stick with Greta, thanks.

Not really a royalist but am impressed with the service our Queen has given our world. She is in a unique position to comment and advise ... as she has done over the years. Wasn't she quoted as saying world leaders need to do something not say something, albeit 'accidentally'. This will have had more impact than anything a ranting teenager is saying that is really about getting attention and self promotion.

Iam64 Sun 07-Nov-21 12:33:59

Ok I can post again, tested as 3 earlier wouldn’t post

As others have said Greta T is on the autistic spectrum. The environment, climate change became her area of special interest as adolescence hit. Her parents are reported as having initially been worried but noticed her confidence grew, her anxiety lessened as her activism increased, so they continued to support activism.
Many of the comments here remind me of gransnet at its grumpy judgemental worst. Grannies ganging up on an 18 year old whose activities hurt no one and raise awareness of the dangers of climate change.
Sneering at people who was yoghurt pots says a lot about the sneerer.

If humans can't commit to a totally green life, then we are playing russian roulette with the future of the human race on earth. That's why she's so passionate. I know it took the science a long time to be 100% sure that it was our activity that was causing global warming, but that is proven now. I would rely on that all the more because it took so long. It is certain. And it's also certain that, not only trees and animals that we love but also us, all our DGS & DGD will die out if this goes on. And if we stop net carbon loss into the atmosphere tomorrow, it wil be a long time before the earth stops warming, as there is a positive feedback mechanism involved here. This is why she's "too immature to understand the other factors- jobs, food". Would we rather be unemployed or extinct? I know which I'd rather for my descendants. starvation is extreme and I would hope ways can be found that this doesn't happen, but 100 years ago (when global warmoing had already gotten started) Stalin starved millions of peasants to radically adress the Soviet union's relative backwardness. They said the ends justified the means. We are at a point where the priority is to stop global warming. But many people still have other eggs in their basket. There is just this one egg, otherwise life on earth is going to be hellish or impossible within a few generations. That's what she's trying to get across & she is not immature, but those who say she doesn't understand other factors can't see the wood for the trees.

@Alegrias. I really suggest you read my post Antonia

Which post, and why? I'm giving my own opinion. I don't need to take the opinions of others into account.

The one at 9:53. The one with the facts in it.

I don't need to take the opinions of others into account.

I'll just leave this there...

I don't understand why you appear so aggressive. What exactly is wrong with me giving my own opinion?

I can't take into account every single post written on this thread.

And why do you suppose your own post is the one with the facts in it? Are other people's opinions worth less than yours?

?

Now that the oxygen thieves know that their days are numbered ( or are they?) I fear that they are going to seriously ramp up deforestation.

Bolsinaro will no doubt take the money and run....and still turn a blind eye to all the illegal logging.

I don't particularly warm to her but admit that she is passionate about the planet.
The trouble is, I don't believe she would ever be satisfied. She wants immediate, drastic change, right this minute, and I think she lacks the maturity to understand that humans are not ready to commit to a totally green life.
I'm sure she'd be happy if everyone gave up their cars, all flights were banned, no-one ate beef etc, but she seems to have no idea of the consequences. Farmers going out of business, thousands of jobs lost, not enough green energy to meet needs etc.
It's all very well saying ' insulate your home, install heat pumps' etc, but many people can barely afford food, let alone expensive home improvements.

Good post.
The point being that nothing is simple.

Daisymae Sun 07-Nov-21 12:18:29

Meryl - that's exactly why action needs to be taken today. They are actually on notice so will almost certainly extract and destroy as much as possible

Kandinsky

And I’m not sure why I’m being singled out by quite a few people on this thread.
I’ve said far less than many others.
All I’ve said is I find her annoying - so what? I’ve not commented on her appearance, or said I think she’s talking rubbish.
Plenty of people before her have said exactly the same things, she’s not saying anything new which is why I’m surprised at all the media attention.
And my point about mobile phones is not ‘silly’ as some of you suggest.
Where is your phone / laptop made?
What are the costs to the environment in having these ( low shelf life ) items?
They’ve only been around about 15 years & I’m already on my 5th phone.
Aren’t Samsung a South Korean company? One of the biggest polluters in the world.
Who are the biggest buyers of smart phones? I’d say younger people, the very people hanging on Greta’s every word ( whilst taking pictures of her on their non essential, bad for the planet, made in the country they’re complaining about, smart phone.

I think that’s a fair comment from you Kandinsky and I haven’t seen ‘hate’ in more than two posts on here by others,
More are just answering the OP in thinking that GT is irritating, which is a long way from hate, isn’t it?
This thread is just another example of some posters really not wanting others to have a different opinion to their own and steamrollering ( or trying to) their voices.
I think that if you find GT annoying ( and it has to be said that many do) or if you think she is some kind of Saint or any shade of opinion in between....that’s all fine, because it is what it is, an opinion.

Ro60 Sun 07-Nov-21 11:57:30

DiscoDancerBlimy! She's been annoying for 4 years! ?

Must say, she's rallied the young ones to campaign - world wide too!

Why do people put their personal more superficial interests before saving the climate?

Here is a short article from the Guardian .

Now I have to be careful here because I got deleted recently for saying that there is a difference between facts and opinions, and how that isn't always appreciated.

But...

there is a difference between facts and opinions, and that isn't always appreciated.

Just pointed out Antonia, that you might be interested in reading a summary of why Greta isn't insisting that we put heat pump on our houses, and what she is saying is a much bigger deal than that. She understands consequences very well, she's not a teenager stamping her feet.
