Brexit is dead, it is no more, it has ceased to be - because it has happened. We have withdrawn from the European Union

The next bit will be how you vote in the next election. We will have two choices on the ballot paper - however many names are there. You can vote for the Conservative continuity of anti-democratic, anti-Europe government or the candidate best placed to stop them and who offer, as Labour has already stated, that they would seek a "closer alliance with the EU".

If you do not vote for that best-placed candidate, you will be voting for a move further away from our European neighbours and further away from democracy.

The claim made suggested that the country as a whole would be starving. Scenes like Afghanistan.

I do not diminish the problems of those on limited incomes in these inflationary times. The Trussell Trust and other food banks have beenn highlighting the problem for several years now, but people in this country starving, I am sorry that is ridiculous.

Oh well! That's OK then! It's just the poorest who won't be able to eat nutritious food. I mean! Who cares about them?

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Nov-21 22:45:39

PippaZ didn't say "all" the people in this country starving though, did she? It seems some are trying to say that to dismiss what she had to say.

Urmstongran Thu 11-Nov-21 22:45:38

Thank you MOnica for your sensible response. Some on here aren’t satisfied until they whip up a sense of panic and doom.

^if people in this country do end up starving because of them.^
Hyperbolic nonsense PippaZ.

Hey lemongrove it’s your turn to be rounded upon. It was me last night.
And tomorrow I expect.
?

Oh stop this nonsense.

You keep talking about wonderful Brexit, and yet you have refused, again, and again, for months and more to provide any information whatsoever about what good things Brexit has given so far to the country and people.

It was definitely growstuff. Although I agree fully.

I do apologise most profoundly, ladies.

Though, as you said, it could have been either of you smile

Anybody watching the Hairy Bikers tonight? When the baker in Newcastle talked about the woman coming into his shop and asking what she could get for 50p? Not for a sweet treat, what she could eat to keep her from going hungry.

If you don't think people are going hungry, you're just not paying attention.

Totally agree, Urmstongran wild claims about people starving, presumably because there are no packets of crisps on the supermarket shelves or only one brand of baked beans on the shelf, diminish the credibility of those who make them.

More likely because the price of food is increasing - and it is.

I wonder how those who think the referendum was democratic, dislike the EU intensely or, like the fisherman, just want want to give the French a bloody nose will feel if people in this country do end up starving because of them.

With Johnson in control, there is a strong chance of this happening. He is not the man to sort it out. We need a wholly different attitude to achieve that.

At least the Brexit voting public are beginning to see through him. A survey by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, on Wednesday, found 38% of people would back Labour at the ballot box, while 36% said they would vote Conservative. I'm sure this will bounce along but perhaps the start of the end of this iniquitous government and its angry followers may be on the way.

Many people much more learned than I have written books about the definition of democracy. It bugs me that the word has been so devalued that people think it's just about putting a cross in a box.

Alegrias was saying that many people don't understand what democracy is. If you think that a fraudulently won advisory referendum is the be all and end all of democracy, then you are one of them, lemon.

I think that might have been me.

Susieq62 Thu 11-Nov-21 18:21:33

As a retired teacher with left wing leanings I take offence that I influenced my students in any way at all! Politics was kept out of the classroom even when I taught Gov and Politics plus Citizenship GCSE! My views were my own ! We even had our MP to speak about life as an MP but not what his politics were ! Too many right wing Daily Fail believers here sometimes !

Oh please, someone promised upthread to give us a list of the benefits of BREXIT.
????????????????????????
Just one teensy, weensy benefit?
Sighs, and gets on with her evening.

It's not as it is the first time we asked- we have been asking for months and months- never a single reply. ZILCH- I wonder why.

How anyone can still shout 'democracy' after all we now know and the antics of the last few months (years) - is unbelievable.

It was mentioned upthread MaizieD and is reported in the same way that I have just done in all the news outlets.
I’m not in the least interested in the story ( it probably happens regularly on MP jollies) but it doesn’t mean it is a ‘new low’ to comment on it.

It is, because there is NO comparison whatsoever.

It may amuse you lemon that our country had been damaged by a fraudulent referendum, won by lies, cheating and foreign interference, the result of which would have been annulled had it not been merely advisory, but it is not amusing. It is tragic.

Our children and grandchildren will suffer its consequences for a very long time.

I completely agree.
Love the ‘It seems to me that some people only accept democracy when they agree with it’ ( the result) ??????

The problem seems to be that so many people don't even understand what democracy is.

Funny you should say that.....as some won’t accept a democratic vote ( referendum) or a democratic vote ( GE) and
Deny that we live in a democracy.
On the other hand...if the referendum vote had gone the other way, they would have no problem with it, ditto if the LP had got in at the last GE.It would be called democracy in action no doubt. It never fails to amuse me.

I think you've just proved Alegrias' point...

Probably because the people involved are MP’s and therefore relevant to a news and politics thread, I should think.

Just not this one lemongrove. There was nothing vaguely related to it in the OP.

But hey, no leave voter has ever wanted to discuss reality - as we are now experiencing.
