Brexit is dead, it is no more, it has ceased to be - because it has happened. We have withdrawn from the European Union

The next bit will be how you vote in the next election. We will have two choices on the ballot paper - however many names are there. You can vote for the Conservative continuity of anti-democratic, anti-Europe government or the candidate best placed to stop them and who offer, as Labour has already stated, that they would seek a "closer alliance with the EU".

If you do not vote for that best-placed candidate, you will be voting for a move further away from our European neighbours and further away from democracy.

Probably because the people involved are MP’s and therefore relevant to a news and politics thread, I should think.

It's not the slightest bit relevant to this thread, which is about what happens now the Brexit is over.

It was dropped in as a dead cat...

I completely agree.
Love the ‘It seems to me that some people only accept democracy when they agree with it’ ( the result) ??????

The problem seems to be that so many people don't even understand what democracy is.

Funny you should say that.....as some won’t accept a democratic vote ( referendum) or a democratic vote ( GE) and
Deny that we live in a democracy.
On the other hand...if the referendum vote had gone the other way, they would have no problem with it, ditto if the LP had got in at the last GE.It would be called democracy in action no doubt. It never fails to amuse me.

Last election was about far more than just Brexit and positing that it was is misrepresenting the actual options we were faced with at the ballot box. Even people who felt voting Tory was a vote for Brexit weren’t able to specify what kind of Brexit they wanted or were expecting.
If I could have voted for a party committed to another referendum or intent on cancelling the Brexit referendum vote on basis it was advisory only and not binding I would have done so regardless of their other policies. There was no such option on my ballot paper though so I had to look at all the policies and take a view.
Next time round it’s unlikely to be much better. Tories will never admit they got this wrong and no viable opposition party is likely to have the guts to go back on Brexit but it’s what we should be doing.

Whilst you're still on the subject of the Labour MP who may have been drunk - does anyone remember Gerald Nabarro, who, whilst drunk drove across a roundabout. He then got his secretary, one Christine Hamilton, to take the rap.

Gosh I remember that but didn't know it was Christine Hamilton! Wasn't there some claim that the bits of his well known handlebar moustache seen were in fact his secretary's hair flick ups?

It was mentioned upthread MaizieD and is reported in the same way that I have just done in all the news outlets.
I’m not in the least interested in the story ( it probably happens regularly on MP jollies) but it doesn’t mean it is a ‘new low’ to comment on it.

I just wonder why it is on this thread and not on a Chat gossip thread, which, if it should be anywhere, is where it should be.

Most of those who voted to Remain seem to have accepted that we have left the EU and moved on.It’s healthier to think that way, bitterness is corrosive.
It’s far, far too early to be demanding ‘myriad benefits’ in fact, with the economy after the pandemic as it is, it will take even longer....but it will come.

OK, they're not happening now, lemon, but what benefits can we expect in the future? Just give us something to look forward to, eh?

I’d be keeping my counsel on the drunkenness story if I were you lemongrove. It will be deeply embarrassing for the Tories if it is proved to be a smear campaign. I agree that an investigation is needed - that’s what happened when the Welsh Tory leader resigned after it was proved that he’d been involved in a drinking session in the Senedd during lockdown. Politicians can all be foolish, it’s not a party specific trait.

I was a Brexit voter and would do the same again. Brexit is not dead, but it must have escaped Pippa that we have had Covid hovering over our lives for a continuous period and now the young activists (r wearing expensive trainers and clothes that they throw out after wearing a couple of times. They spend their lives using social media on Apple products, which cost the earth in different ways)I rarely post here because on political matters those that are leftish are always sure they are right and they do not want to do anything but slam the Tory govt. I think they were all educated by left wing teachers and in fact I have always wondered how many of you were teachers (I was)
I seem to recall Tony Blair went on many foreign holidays paid for by his moneyed friends. Back in the day James Callaghan and Dennis Healey owned land and large properties in Sussex. Heard of Claudia Webbe? Well she was Labour and s*um, Labour expelled her, but she still maintains her seat in the Commons.
I dislike the EU intensely and so do others. It seems to me that some people only accept democracy when they agree with it, but will never accept the will of the majority. We left and we will not be resuming our membership. Get over it and find a more popular leader. Keir Starmer is a decent man who lacks charisma. The Tories will find another leader, possibly Liz Truss because Boris has lost his shine.

Glad to see that you've manged to get it all off your chest in one go, Anniel grin

"If you do not vote for that best-placed candidate, you will be voting for a move further away from our European neighbours and further away from democracy."

The lack of democracy and democratic accountability was a large reason I voted in favour of leaving the sclerotic EU. I felt justified yesterday, yet again, when I saw that the EU was trying to change its rules so it could deploy its (at present) small army without buy-in from its members where it presently has to consult and gain consent.

This mission creep is actually part of the deliberate original policy of 'ever closer union' which, de facto, means demoting sovereign counties to the status of regions and ruling from the centre without electoral mandate.

Trade and exchange, however, a common market in other words, is an excellent idea and it is a pity we were not able to stick to that.

growstuff Thu 11-Nov-21 14:56:59

PS. I think you should do some homework about what democracy entails.

As to the inebriated SNP members and a Labour MP, time will tell as there should be an investigation by their respective Parties. It’s alleged that all three were drinking in the VIP lounge and on board the plane.

I thought that this wasn't going to be discussed because it could be sub judice?

Can't see what it has to do with Brexit, either...

growstuff Thu 11-Nov-21 14:55:54

Annie1 I would imagine most of my teachers are now dead, but most of them would be turning in their graves at being told they were "left wing".

Despite all the gripes the UK did vote to leave and really what is happening was pretty predictable. You voted for it, suck it up and move on.

I could be wrong but isn't Nanna8 talking to the Brexiters when she says "suck it up"?

Any views on the fisherman's thinking? It is good that he knows he was wrong to vote leave but he seems to only want to make things worse. He will be so disillusioned when he realises what Johnson has actually done to him.

Yes, you are quite right growstuff -some people, not all.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Well.....some posters in the past ( for all of the time) all posters ( for some of the time) ? ....it happens if links are regularly posted.
If a poster apologises that should be the end of the matter.
