I missed some of the interview as I was driving/delivering. My overall impression is that Emma Barnett conducted a robust, analytical interview. Nancy Kelly seemed unable to answer any question. The ‘discussion’ on JK Rowling showed EB to be well informed and Kelly evasive

I so agree Iam64 evasive being the word.

Emma Barnett is a supreme Interviewer IMO and Nancy Kelly avoided giving decisive answers to the important questions. What a cop out. ?

I didn’t hear any of it, I was out. But re. JKRowling, did you see that Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint are all going to be in some new Harry Potter thing even though all three of them have previously spoken out against JK’s attitude to the whole trans issue. So they’re obviously still happy to keep taking the money. Hypocritical or what?
Also, the three of them but Emma in particular haven’t half been getting some stick over this on Twitter from the trans lobby. Maybe now they’ll appreciate just how JK must have felt over the last couple of years. The reason for Emma being the main ‘target” is that she is/has been a donor to/supporter of Mermaids.

It is very worrying indeed that someone's work and career can be affected by a disagreement over something which does not affect their actual work in the slightest.

Iam64, absolutely! I listened on the way back from the gym. I was riveted by the JKR part.
NK avoided actually saying JKR was transphobic, (wriggle, wriggle), it became possibly some of the things she said, (wriggle, wriggle), or the way the things were said. Emma’s questioning was, as you said, robust-accompanied by mentions of really needing NK to answer.
I found NK equally evasive on Kathleen Stock, but here I want to make a particular point.
Just because you have experienced something similar doesn’t mean it is right that the other person did.
NK said“I suffered on-line abuse, hate mail . . . ” implying that Kathleen Stick was not suffering on her own.
That doesn’t make it right or better and I keep seeing this used more and more.

I head some of it (was driving at the time). Nancy Kelly didn’t seem able to answer a lot of the questions even though she’s CEO of Stonewall. confused

Just listened on BBC Sounds. EB was very good yet again. She did well trying to get Nancy to give straight answers, even though it was like getting blood out of a stone. She did at least get NK to say that nobody can change biological sex, which rather contradicted her other assertion that transwomen are literally women ? NK stated that Stonewall offer a range of vocabulary for documents and would not ask for 'mother' to be removed from the Scottish policy. Well that was shown to be a lie with the follow up enquiry to Nolan investigates which provided absolute proof that Stonewall were asking them to remove all remaining gendered language. Perhaps she just doesn't know what her organisation does? Couldn't quote anything J K Rowling had said or written that was transphobic either. That will be like every other accuser, they can't give quotes because there aren't any!

I am sure this will get me banished from the gender critical cult or whatever it is I am part of, but I feel a little sorry for stonewall. I have watched what has been going on on their Twitter feed for the last year or so and just didnt understand how they were continuing to function with such a split amongst their supporters. I actually dont see how they can begin to back down. But a little bit of hope, yesterday the LGB alliance and Stonewall were in the same room debating the issue. I thought that was a sign of progress.

Rosie51 Thu 18-Nov-21 14:42:29

Galaxy I have seen comments elsewhere hoping that Stonewall are beginning to back down a bit so they can go back to doing what they did so well until a few years ago.

Well, with rising criticism Nancy Kelly's job position will be questioned, so she is bound to ease back to save her job.

Iam64 Thu 18-Nov-21 15:26:51

Galaxy, if there is a gender critical cult please don’t desert it

Galaxy Thu 18-Nov-21 15:34:21

The thing is Iam64 I havent received my far right money or been recruited by Julie Bindel so am not sure what I am getting out of all this grin. Thankyou though.

Ilovecheese Thu 18-Nov-21 16:10:55

I listened to it. Nancy Kelly did get into a bit of a tangle, saying that no one can actually change sex but also saying that transwomen are literally women.

Also that Stonewall believes that the BBC should be impartial on these issues but that she also wanted Stonewall to have more influence.

Visgir1 Thu 18-Nov-21 16:16:36

It was really good. Catch up on BBC sounds worth a listen.

Although I wouldn't know where to find it now, the statement made by the 3 young people about JKR was actually kind, not critical. They praised her for all she had done, but recognised their differences.
I was struck by how helpful it was.
