Keeping Royal Secrets

We are often told on here that despite the financial or democratic problems with the system, having a Royal Family provides continuity and something to fall back in in times of crisis, such as pandemics. So what do we think of this quote from the Sunday Herald this morning, regarding whether certain Royal papers should be released. In this case it should be noted that the papers already belong to belong to the tax payer but we’re not allowed to see the content.

Protecting the dignity of the Queen and working members of the royal family by protecting their privacy in truly private matters preserves their ability to discharge their duties in their fundamental and central constitutional role, not least of unifying the nations (as was seen during the depths of the current pandemic). Roger Smethurst, head of knowledge and information at the Cabinet Office.

On other words, if we know what they were really like in private, we’d never be taken in by their idealised images. They need to keep some things secret because they don’t fit with the image they want to portray.

Thoughts?

Who mentioned leaving the Royal family? I only said that people had decided it wasn't for them.

A bit like Katherine Kent.

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 17:17:46

It's one thing to be bored by what someone is saying; it's another to say that it's just c & p propaganda*. I think it's a bit unfair.
I looked at the site because I'm nosy out of interest.

Well, we don't have to read all the spiel I suppose.

Anniebach Thu 25-Nov-21 17:02:41

Wrong Lucca no one has left the royal family with the exception of Mark .Phillips .

Fergie and Diana divorced but certainly didn’t leave the royal family.

Katherine Kent did stop carrying out royal duties because of ill
health so stopped using her title, she hasn’t left the royal family.

Harry and his wife certainly haven’t left the royal family , they make sure the world knows they are part of the royal family.

Who has married into the royal family then decided it’s not for them ?

Mark Phillips has never spoken against them.

Wallis Simpson didn’t have a choice.

?

Disingenuous!

MaizieD Thu 25-Nov-21 15:46:03

I know your views on economics and your explanations are your own MaizieD not cut and paste jobs.

But they didn't come into my head unaided, Calistemon. I have sources that I can link to and what they say will be similar to what I say. Or maybe I do a bit of c & p too wink

There's some gardening ones too.

Yes, I have chatted to Grany on other threads. ?
Amicably.

^Thank you MaizieD^

It's a pleasure, Grany.

I don't share your views on the monarchy or the *Labour Party, but I really don't see why you should be vilified for posting them.

*I do like them better than fascist views, though grin

It is though.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Nov-21 13:55:18

Have I ever suggested that it should? Bit of a sweeping statement.

MaizieD Thu 25-Nov-21 13:52:21

You really just have to take the rough with the smooth, Gsm and stop thinking that the forum should be run to please you.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Nov-21 13:47:18

It’s very nice to hear your own words Grany, and expressed in a measured way. There is room, I hope, for many different opinions on GN but I always prefer to hear them in a poster’s own words rather than just a link to propaganda, some of which may come across as very extremist. It is the difference between seeing a poster as a real person with their own views rather than as the face of an organisation.

grany it’s nice to read your own words not copied and pasted from republican sites

Posters expressing republican opinions is one thing and it's interesting to read other people's views, but Gransnet is being used for propaganda purposes by Republic.

Being a bit extreme aren't you, Calistemon?

When does an alternative point of view turn into propaganda?

We seem to have no problem with people supporting fascists, what is wrong with republicans?

Am I going to be in trouble for pushing and alternative view of national economics?

Thank you MaizieD

The republican point of view is not propaganda. And mentioning a new book about royal myths could be of interest to royalists too.

On a news and politics thread discussing monarchy, we each have our own views, posters should discuss the issues raised not having a go at a poster because you don't agree with what was said.

Please show me another thread on which Grany posts Maizie. I have only ever seen her on a RF thread, frequently posting links to republican propaganda.

I'm here so I'll just do it.

Sorry Grany

You are right lemsip. My own daughter’s name is Catherine, with a C, so you will excuse me from using the wrong spelling for Katharine Kent.

Lucca Thu 25-Nov-21 13:03:12

??

Alegrias1 Thu 25-Nov-21 12:59:10

lemsip

she is Katharine with a K!

Katharine, Duchess of Kent

Quite right lemsip

I hope you'll be equally fastidious when other posters misspell the names of "commoners" who marry into Royalty and then decide its not for them.

MaizieD Thu 25-Nov-21 12:53:35

In fact I never see Grany posting anything but republican propaganda.

Perhaps you don't look very far, Gsm.

Perhaps you could give me a link to the specious twaddle I have posted Grany. I entirely agree with Calistemon about the propaganda being posted on here. In fact I never see Grany posting anything but republican propaganda. It seems to be all she is interested in, and always voiced in a nasty and angry manner.

I do hope you will tell us where we can buy signed copies Grany. You really do come out with a lot of specious twaddle.

So do you
