Sheffield Council conducted a survey on whether street names and street art with links to outdated views should be changed or removed. 3 cheers to the residents of Sheffield who voted resoundingly for them to stay. Commonsense 1 Woke 0.

How lovely hmm

It might only be one city but that’s all it takes to turn the tide ?

It was Sheffield residents that protested against the council ordering loads of trees to be cut down a few years ago. They like a good protest there!

I still balk at pubs who change their names.

We do love a dog whistle story, don't we...

Speaking of dog whistles wink

A strange thing to balk at!

Why would that be?

I can understand that. There is a lovely pub near Hever Castle, Anne Boleyn's childhood home, named after King Henry VIII. I wouldn't want to see something with such a historical link have its name changed.

When I saw the thread title I remembered the year we spent in Sheffield. I worked for a company of Welders and Steeplejacks (on the clerical side!) while DH did his masters degree. So I thought this thread might literally be about Sheffield Steel ?

Recently MrB bought me some handmade Sheffield steel tailors' shears. Sadly they are made for a man's quite large hand so, having quite small hands myself, I hardly use them – far too heavy and cumbersome! I haven't told MrB. It's the thought that counts, right? ?

The use of the word woke is an odd one for me.

I looked up the meaning and it's 'alert to social injustice, especially racism'. Why would anyone think that being alert to social injustice isn't a good thing?

Eg The Slug and Lettuce never sounds very appealing, nor does Hog's Breath.

Give me The Red Lion or The King's Head any day!!

I hope you 'paid' him for them, Baggs
10p would do - it's unlucky otherwise. ?

KNIVES AND SCISSORS
Giving anything sharp, such as a knife or scissors, is bad luck, as it’s thought to sever the relationship. However, the damage can be mitigated if the receiver gives something small, like a coin, in return to make the exchange a transaction. Some folklorists err on the side of caution and also recommend repeating the rhyme: “If you love me, as I love you, no knife can cut our love in two.”

I think it's because the Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Telegraph, the Sun and GB news tell them that it's Bad and a threat to the fabric of our society...

Reading the DM article about the street names was like looking on at a game of dog whistle bingo...

Calistemon Thu 02-Dec-21 16:46:52

Well done Sheffield residents.

I remember the vogue for local councillors immortalising themselves by naming new streets after themselves - the trouble is they were so insignificant that no-one can remember who they were or why their road is so named.

MaizieD Thu 02-Dec-21 16:54:54

I don't suppose the residents of Gladstone St and Peel St had much idea about who they were named for. There are thousands of streets up and down the UK named after people that no-one has a clue about.

It was just a nice opportunity for a bit of anti-wokeness. I wonder who was behind it...

Calistemon Thu 02-Dec-21 17:00:56

When I was a small child I used to read all the street names as we went into town on the bus.

I used to think that Peel Street was named after orange or lemon peel ??
