It now looks possible that the huge majority enjoyed by the disgraced Tory MP Owen Paterson could be overturned by the Liberal Democrat candidate Helen Morgan

Excellent news. Wait for the Tories to say it’s a mid term blip!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 17-Dec-21 07:53:26

Just for fun

If this result was repeated nation wide, the Tories would be left with 3 seats ???

Tory MP Sir Roger Gale said Mr Johnson was on "last orders".
"One more strike and he's out," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, adding that the by-election "has to be seen as a referendum on the prime minister's performance".
Conservative Party chairman Oliver Dowden said voters were "fed up and wanted to send us a clear message", but told BBC Breakfast that Mr Johnson was succeeding on "the big calls" he had to make. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-59693102

Do these people live in cloud cuckoo land? Succeeding in ‘the big calls’, indeed! Loosing a seat they’ve held for 200 years. It’s a very long time. When are the more moderate Tories going to get a grip as even they could be an improvement.

Wouldn’t that be good ??

Well done Helen Morgan ?

A wake-up call for the good Conservative MP’s…

Iam64 Fri 17-Dec-21 08:10:13

The most positive news I’ve heard in a while. Well done Helen Morgan and thank you everyone who voted for her. The constituency had almost 200 years with a Conservative MP. If they don’t recognise this is a message to the Conservative party and not just to Johnson, they really are in trouble (yippee)

The LibDem funding by a company developing puberty blockers doesn’t seem to me a reason never to vote LibDem. I’m viewed as a terf, so I’m not dismissing the concerns.

Sofa Fri 17-Dec-21 08:17:20

Brilliant new! We’ll done Helen Morgan.

It seems to me that most good Tories are outside of the Tory party

Kandinsky Fri 17-Dec-21 08:18:06

I wonder why the libdems never actually win general elections?
They seem to be more of a ‘protest’ vote.

Iam64 Fri 17-Dec-21 08:21:24

Kandinsky - this seems more than a protest vote.
The LibDems lost support, IMO, after their coalition with the Conservatives. The were in a position to influence but actually voted in support of the bedroom tax - twice. When no longer in coalition, the LibDems announced they now could see how damaging that tax is. There were other issues but I found that unforgivable.

It may be midterm but Tories can’t argue this away as a blip. 200 years conservative wiped out by Lib Dem’s supported by Labour supporters. It had cheered my day.

MaizieD Fri 17-Dec-21 08:24:13

So relieved ?. I hardly dared to look this morning..

Well done LibDems.

Yes but wishful thinking gets you nowhere. Not sure what the liberal wets can do. Even I think Labour win would have been better.

And Labour would be obliterated now that really would be good ???

Tactical voting gets results!! It is the way forward.

Galaxy Fri 17-Dec-21 08:56:28

It will kill me though grin. I voted lib dem once when Corbyn was playing the ultimate game of self indulgence with the labour party but I swore I would never do it again. I know I know, but the Tories.

You’re very rude, again. Yes I am a Tory as you so disparagingly seem to put it. Lemons, no love, can’t stand them. Very bitter like many on here after a Tory win, or metionofBrexit.

Maudi Fri 17-Dec-21 09:14:15

Why didn't they use tactical voting and vote the Labour candidate in, Labour came second in the last election. Seems like a vote of no confidence in Starmer to me ?

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Dec-21 09:14:37

Lemons? No, grapes. Sour ones.

Anyway.

Well done the Lib Dems, you must be pleased Susan56. And varian!

Casdon Fri 17-Dec-21 09:16:36

Maudi you need a few Maths lessons. Labour were 12% down in vote share compared with the last election, the Tories were 30% down.

Tactical voting won the day, very well done Lib Dems.

Huge Tory defeat, 7th biggest swing in history, lost a seat they've held for 200 years.

Oh, yes, its all about Starmer ??

No not at all, couldn’t care less to be honest. They’ll not make one iota of difference. Oh of course they’ve given the Tories a bloody nose, don’t really care about that either to be fair. It’s not going to make a difference to my area.

GrannySomerset Fri 17-Dec-21 09:17:59

All very exciting but does anyone else remember Eric Lubbock and the Orpington bi-election, also trumpeted as a Liberal revival?
