Probably sounds more exciting than it will be.

I do trust my GP up to a point but GP’s are not experts in any one field (apart from their ‘specialist subject’ and even that isn’t up to consultancy level )and certainly aren’t experts regarding covid as they’re learning as they go along.

maddyone Mon 13-Dec-21 16:51:53

Daisend1 I’m intrigued by your post about trusting your GP. I trust my GP too, although I’ve not met her yet because she’s new (but she sent me for a chest X-ray without ever meeting me as my asthma nurse thinks my permanent cough may be long Covid) but actually did your GP tell you to wear a mask inside all buildings or on public transport, or was that BJ? Who told you to get a booster? The government of course. Who told people to work from home if possible? It was the government. It’s the job of government to give out advice regarding the pandemic. Your GP will obviously advise you to get a booster vaccination, and will care for you remotely if you get Covid, but it’s not her/his job to give out advice to be followed by the entire nation.

Kali, why would he apologise, he didn’t do anything. Trust everyone got the message, get the 3rd vaccine, who cares if his hair is untidy, he was clean in a tie and suit, if you mentioned a woman’s hair all the time it would be sexist.

Daisend1 Mon 13-Dec-21 15:22:12

I trust my GP so don't feel the need for B J telling me what /what not to do.

How many times does it have to be pointed out that it isn’t political. Please don’t have such a tainted view of your fellow gransnetters lemon grove. We all want what’s best for the country and, at this moment in time Johnson isn’t it. Even his own party knows it. The worst possible leader at the worst possible time.

Thinking about the announcement by DePiffle that everyone will be jabbed by 31 Dec, I think, listening to my DD, DS and various friends, the betting is that with luck most may get a jab booked, but the jabs will with further luck be completed by the end of Jan.

DePiffle knows that.

Yes, WWM2 DD and SIL are booked but couldn't get anything until 4th Jan. In a way maybe that is a good sign that all available appointments are going like hot cakes?

I agree lemongrove.
Each one of us should do our best to stop this awful virus taking more lives.
As a nation we need to pull together in the interests of all of us.
Concentrate on this for now.

MaizieD Mon 13-Dec-21 15:02:16

These things can be made by anyone competent at DIY.

Research findings reported.

The point is that they have known this this winter was going to be difficult whatever the strain. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to work out that the demand for LFTs would increase dramatically at Christmas time.

Simply not good enough.

Josianne Mon 13-Dec-21 14:59:59

I believe Maizie there is already an ongoing trial with air filters in schools somewhere to the tune of a couple of million pounds. The question is whether they really make much difference anyway.

lemongrove Mon 13-Dec-21 14:53:47

the aim is to get as many people boosters as is humanly possible, as soon as possible, to step things up a notch in order to do that. It's the right thing to do.
instead of indulging in pessimistic anti-tory sentiments it would be at least more logical to see that it's exactly the right move to make at this time, when we don't yet know how serious things may get in the coming months.
give snipey party politics a rest.

Sparklefizz Mon 13-Dec-21 14:53:19

There is no LFT shortage in my local pharmacy. I went in for 1 pack and was offered 2. If people can't get them online, get a pharmacy code on your phone and take it there.

Yes 25Avalon and that's really all she can do. Blaming the government for not installing the sophisticated ventilation system I mentioned is probably far from her mind. She could do a project on the Arctic and Polar bears or Antarctica and penguins!

Even if they can't easily upgrade the ventilation they could install HEPA filters in every classroom at very low cost.

And what happened to the CO2 monitors all schools were promised? (Not that they're much use if you've nowhere else to take the children after a high reading...)

How lovely that teachers are so stoical...

How about the children from poor families who can't afford to buy them arctic quality coats?

25Avalon Mon 13-Dec-21 14:51:18

Josianne that’s dd alright!

vegansrock Mon 13-Dec-21 14:49:17

I was in Boots an hour ago, several people asking for lateral flow tests they had ordered- they’d run out.

the usual political point scoring from a few....Johnson has done something right in this instance but the Tory bashing takes precedence as usual.
Alegrias certainly isn't either a Johnson fan or a Conservative fan and yet is able to take a fair and balanced approach on this subject, if only everybody could!
Forget the politics business as usual on GN and think what's a good idea to do next with Omicron spiralling out of control.

25Avalon Mon 13-Dec-21 14:29:12

Dd happy to keep windows and doors open in her classroom and wear Eskimo Nell coat. I expect the kids are the same - several of them have had covid.

Josianne Mon 13-Dec-21 14:11:47

This discussion about school buildings is brought up fairly often, but I am not sure several posters have any idea how that is feasible. Sure, if you are building a new school it can be designed into the spec, but it would be a difficult, almost impossible undertaking in the old school buidings up and down the land.
DH looked into it (his job) for independent schools, where money is more readily available, but the ducting needs to run through the entire infrastructure and fabric of the school building. It isn't at all like installing air conditioning, let alone the huge costs involved.

notgoneyet Mon 13-Dec-21 14:10:26

Good luck with that Zoejory - thanks to Boris's little scaremongering speech last night. My daughter, who had an appointment booked for 10.30 this morning, arrived at 10.15 to find a huge queue stretching both ways outside the chemist. Total debacle. Despite her appointment, she was waiting outside in the cold and rain for 2hours and 20mins before she got in. They had drop-ins and no notice was taken regarding appointments. Not even first come first served, as anyone with a small child or pregnant was taken straight in. She'd left her 2-year-old grandson with me while she went! Absolutely ridiculous - they need separate venues for drop-ins and appointments. She said there was just one injecting - he didn't even wipe her arm down before or after the jab.....

MaizieD Mon 13-Dec-21 13:43:52

Oh, and increased fuel bills for schools, which really can't afford it, so as to try to warm all that lovely cold airflow hmm

MaizieD Mon 13-Dec-21 13:42:25

Dd teaches year 5/6. She has every window and door open. The temperature is 14c.

Positively balmy grin

Just wait until it's hovering around 1c.

I'm sure we're all delighted to know that our children will be teaching, and our grandchildren will be sitting learning, in their coats in low winter temperatures with the doors and windows open because the government can't be bothered to implement a programme of improved ventilation and air filters in all schools.

No money in it for their donors, I presume...

25Avalon Mon 13-Dec-21 13:02:32

TopsyIrene06

Oh and no mention of ventilation in schools.

Dd teaches year 5/6. She has every window and door open. The temperature is 14c. So far every teacher has succumbed to Covid except her. Fingers crossed. This is someone who sits on a beach in St. Ives in the heat wearing an overcoat because she feels cold.

1st Omicron death announced.

MaizieD Mon 13-Dec-21 11:44:14

So its the Health Minister's job to speak to the nation but the PM's job to order LFT's. ?

If you're going to change the 'rule' on self isolation, if a family member has covid, from 10 days isolation to 'if you're fully vaccinated you can 'do an LFT every day for a week' it might be a good idea to check that there are enough LFTs available to accommodate it... hmm
