Will someone please tell them Quidditch isn’t real?

For heavens sake! (I could express it more strongly, but really…)
OFFICIALS in charge of Quidditch, a sport inspired by Harry Potter, are to change its name to “distance” it from JK Rowling because of her views on transgender issues.
JK Rowling has been targeted by trans activists because she does not agree with ‘erasing the concept of sex
JK Rowling has been targeted by trans activists because she does not agree with ‘erasing the concept of sex
US Quidditch (USQ) and Major League Quidditch (MLQ) will conduct surveys in the next few months to decide the new name, they announced in a joint statement this week
It said: “The leagues are hoping a name change can help them continue to distance themselves from the works of JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, who has increasingly come under scrutiny for her anti-trans positions in recent years
Our sport has developed a reputation as one of the most progressive sports in the world on gender equality and inclusivity, in part thanks to its gender maximum rule, which stipulates that a team may not have more than four players of the same gender on the field at a time

1). She wrote the bliddy books.
2) It’s not real
3) What have Harry Potter books to do with sexuality/ transgender/ transitioning / or even (whisper) reality?

I really and truly despair confusedconfused

Chewbacca

To be fair MollyGo, if you're the sort of person who believes that having a penis, testicles and an Adam's apple can still make you a woman, then shoving a stick between your legs and running around a field, believing you're flying, isn't too far a stretch is it? They're both in the realms of fantasy and self delusion.

Absolutely! ???

Mollygo Thu 23-Dec-21 17:15:40

Fantastic. Thanks for that FarNorth.

Rosie51 Thu 23-Dec-21 15:21:43

Love it FarNorth! Now they're worthy of calling their game quidditch, unlike those earthbound dolts.

FarNorth Thu 23-Dec-21 11:24:11

For light relief here's a video of some skydivers playing quidditch.

FarNorth, when you’re the sort of sad person who thinks running around with a stick between your legs is the same as flying, and making other factually incorrect claims like that, being nasty about someone else probably makes them feel good about themselves.

FarNorth Wed 22-Dec-21 12:29:11

I just read a post from a UK player of quidditch.
It's only USA quidditch which is changing its name, for commercial reasons.
Some time after announcing that, they added on the bit about how they also want to align themselves with some vicious bullies by denigrating JK Rowling (I paraphrase).

That was Time magazine.

It’s closed and I think Elon Musk won it for the most unusual way to spell a child’s name.

I don’t seem to be able to get on the Guardain online vote, it seems to be closed, is this so or is it me?

Yes it’s now closed. It says so in very small print !

whatever else is done to the body

I’ve always had a lot of respect for Professor Robert Winston, who a few months ago when he was on Question Time said you categorically cannot change your sex. I believe him to be correct. I’m quite happy to accept men who have had all the surgery as women, although I know they are not women, and also to accept women who have had all the hormones as men, even though I know they are not men. This is because, however much surgery a person has, or however many hormones they take, no one can change the chromosomes they were born with. Females have two X chromosomes and males have one X and one Y. This can never be changed, whatever else I’d done to the body. Robert Winston is correct.

Regardless, even if we have long since gone down the road of all men getting to muscle in on everything that used to be female, and female-identifying women being seen as failed men only fit for breeding, I strongly suspect that the sex of the skeletons will still be of interest to people in 5000 years' time, as it is that, rather than gender, that determines all sorts of things about us.

^Why did she ignore the fact that transmen and non-binary people may also menstrute?^

If, in five thousand years’ time, the interred skeletons of transmen and non-binary people are excavated and forensic tests are carried out on them, what do we think the conclusions will be? That those skeletons were of males and of people who had no sexual identity at all?

It’s all smoke and mirrors. BTW, I love the acronym WERM!

SueDonim in 5000 years time I think they’ll know, because the skeletons of transmen and non binary will all be wearing badges saying ’my preferred pronoun is they’.

Doodledog Mon 20-Dec-21 12:32:40

Thank you, SueDonim grin

Why did she ignore the fact that transmen and non-binary people may also menstrute?

Did she? If I said that some dogs are brown, does that ignore the fact that so are some cats?* Would that make me catphobic?

The people who are demonising JKR are the same ones who want to remove the work 'mother' from maternity wards, and house male-born rapists in women's prisons. They are also unable to define what a woman actually means, despite insisting that female-born people have no right to claim the word for themselves.

It's really difficult to avoid the conclusion that there are people out there who are simply misogynistic.

*other brown animals are also available, and have equal right to be known as such.

JKR also said this.

And that’s supposed to be transphobic?
I don’t think I can add your image.

And recently, about this article -

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/absurdity-police-logging-rapists-women-s6576v825

(Penised prisoners are already being housed in women's prisons, in Scotland and the rest of the UK.)

JKR also said this.

This is the article JKR commented about.

*Pinkarolina*. Only women menstruate. It’s a biological fact. None of this people that menstruate. Trans women can’t menstruate. It’s not transphobia and I think, as women, we need to start making as much noise as the trans activists who are just using the trans situation to advance their misogynistic aims.

I agree. It's a shame, as I have every sympathy with what I call 'genuine' transpeople who harm nobody and just want to get on with their lives; but their cause has been hijacked by misogynists, and it needs to be stopped in its tracks.

Calistemon Mon 20-Dec-21 09:55:44

What is under discussion are two different games but both of which include broomsticks and a golden snitch.
?

Which came first?

Perhaps JKR should have registered the name.
