I didn't use the term Boarding houses first I was picked up on my spelling of border, I would have said B&B like most people I just made a joke about it.
I hope the young enjoy themselves tonight safely, we did when we were young 'First footing", it isn't just a Scots practice.
I hope you will have noticed that two posters have kindly agreed with each other not to remark on any of our spelling or grammar mistakes just our malapropisms, and here was I thinking they had got their red pencils sharpened for marking.

Surely they have more fun in Scotland on NYE so they’re unlikely to be wanting to come to England. I would have thought that it would be the other way round with the English sneaking into Scotland .
Why worry about something that may not happen. It’s no wonder so many people suffer from anxiety ?

What makes you say that, why is this about us and them. Many people of our U.K. enjoy celebrating new year, should see our small town, and many don’t celebrate it in all nations. Have you ever seen the English, as you like to point out, cities celebrating like there is no tomorrow. Oh and as for sneaking, we are not banned by law from entering our next door neighbours turf. Hope all enjoy it, of whatever nation, and Happy New Year to all.

A quick check proves that there are still plenty of rooms available for tomorrow night in Carlisle - Ibis, Travel Lodge, Premier Inn!

Totally agree, for god’s sake these are young people who for 2 years have had restrictions placed upon them. Unknown in our generation I refuse to live in fear.

Thanks for the explanation . The peculiar thing is if a word is scientific or to do with a technical term I usually get it right.
All the Boarding houses and hotels will be booked up tomorrow night in Carlisle and Berwick according to me.!!!!!! Good for the Cumbrian and Northumbrian economies.

I think the scientific and technical terms stick in the mind more than the everyday ones that we use without really looking at them, and the ones that sound the same as other words are the worst for getting themselves wrong.

As for predictive text - that is worse than relying on your own memory. It mostly thinks that you are about to write something dodgy. If there is a rude word that starts with the first two letters you have typed, it wants to use that.

The boarding houses and hotels in Cumbria and Northumberland will give thanks for the Boarder reivers!

Our (English) border town is usually full of Welsh accents knspol. Many of ‘em live here!

It is OK, Yammy If no-one in the northern counties is out in the pubs or on the streets celebrating the New Year, but they are all indoors with a mug of cocoa having an early night like the sober sensible citizens we know they all are, there will be no-one for the hordes of marauding Scots to share their CoVid-tainted whisky bottles with, so you will be quite safe.

If they take in boarders, they will just have to confiscate all alcohol at the door.

Earlier in the pandemic when Wales was in a more restrictive tier than our area in England the local area was full of Welsh accents so it is likely to happen again as we're only a short drive away. Doesn't bother me, I'll be at home and if shopping I'll be wearing a mask as usual.

Also Where’s the logic ? Rates are lower in Scotland. Mask wearing is respected more in Scotland, people in England will be out celebrating so why would a few more Scots or Welsh visitors make a huge difference ?

The nightingale hospitals are being built again but there is no one to man them except overtired people. One pregnant person I know who has been told to stop going part time that they must work full time.

GreenGran78 I’m with you 100% We’re not in the situation we had even a year ago. The media keep going on about the number of infections but it is becoming increasingly obvious that these largely don’t translate as serious illness. Yet there seems to be tunnel vision and almost hysteria about “the rules”, many of which are completely illogical. We need to learn to live with COVID not barricade ourselves in forever.

To explain ..... I only went back minutely with a magnifying glass over the OP to see what all the references to posting history and previous threads were all about? (Still none the wiser.) It was only then that I saw the "boarder" spelling in the title and I fear I might have started off the fun and games, on page 2. Sorry, no malice intended, though it was funny how several were tripping up in subsequent posts.

Oh well, at least I'm about 400 miles away from any up North border NYE problems down here in Devon, so I'll keep out of the real issue raised in the OP. I'm not sure the Scots would appreciate the taste of Devon cider on NYE anyway.

It was Callistemon but I had internet problems and had to re-register so left out an 'l'.
I might have to change it again.

I admit I can't spell I am dyslexic, not daft as some on here would like all to believe just something I was born with and have inherited.
So are many people far more intelligent than I am are,or have been Einstein for one and a very well known English poet who is in my family tree. All his works had to be spell checked before publishing.
To point out spelling, grammar and malapropisms sound a bit like Miss Jean Brodie. It will have I have said in the past, stop people posting or even leave completely. Then the few who have benefited from a better Education system or so they think to be constantly at each other with no one else to correct or argue with.

I live near Offa’s Dyke so should I be girding my loins and sharpening my pikestaff to repel the marauding Welsh?
Come to think of it leaves me with a bit of a dilemma. Some of the aforesaid marauders may be chums or relatives I often see here in England, AND their Covid rates are slightly lower than our quite low rate.
No I don’t think it will be like Ayia Napa in our local towns Daily Telegraph, but I won’t hang up the pikestaff just in case…..

As a Northerner I was looking at the situation as a two-way swop. The Scots bringing their germs with them, and also taking our germs back home with them to Scotland. Our pubs and clubs will be open anyway - does it matter whether the Scots infect the English or visa versa?

It won't matter to some where in the country they are, if they want to celebrate they will find a way to do it and to hell with the rules. I'm sure here in N.Ireland there will be plenty of house parties planned, but for me, I will be bringing in the New Year with just my dog and a Bailey's.
