To cross the boarder or not?

What will happen to the number of Covid cases in the Northern counties of England, if Scots do not respond to a request from M/S Sturgeon not to cross to England to celebrate Hogmanay?

Pepper59 Wed 29-Dec-21 18:22:39

Goodness knows. I personally don't know anyone planning to do this. I can actually see Hogmanay far enough, especially this year. I can understand why people in the North of England would be concerned. I just hope it's not as bad as folk fear.

I don't suppose they will behave themselves, especially if they feel it's not justified. We will see what the covid figures are in a month's time to assess the full impact of Christmas and New Year. It was bad last year. We all know there is a dangerous virus circulating and how to avoid it, and it is up to everyone to take responsibility for keeping themselves safe.

To cross the border or not? NOT!

Grandmadinosaur Wed 29-Dec-21 18:36:11

It isn’t just the North where people are doing this it’s also the Welsh said to be crossing into England. I wonder what Sturgeon and Drakeford would have to say if the situation was reversed?

If I lived in one of the regions where people are crossing a border into I would be livid. I am sick of restrictions and having to abide by them but I do.

Live and let live. Come on over, or don’t. If you do you’re very welcome! We are the UNITED Kingdom after all.

Unfortunately there will always be folks who think that rules do not apply to them.

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 18:45:07

I don’t think there will be many people living in say Cardiff or Glasgow travelling miles and crossing the borders, it will be people who live on the border area anyway, most of whom cross the border regularly anyway one way or the other to work shop etc.

If they do party in England, as far as Wales is concerned I’d be angry because they will be more likely to bring it home with them than infect others at the party or pub, because the infection rate is higher in England than it is in Wales at the moment. In all honesty though this is more a political storm than a real one.

Is this an actual thing you know will happen OP or a what if?

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 19:02:43

This seems to be a manufactured problem as several people have expressed concern about the issue on different threads. I too shall be angry if Scots cross the border to go to nightclubs or so on, since we have closed these in Scotland to prevent rates rising whilst in England it seems like a bit of a free for all. In an interactive map posted elsewhere by Casdon, I can see that the rate in the Carlisle area, for instance, is twice that in Dumfries and Galloway. The rate in Glasgow is about the same as it is in Northumberland or Allerdale, and less than it is in Copeland. So I’m more concerned that people crossing into England for a party will bring the virus back with them and make our rates rise.

But the worst thing would be, that people crossing into England for a party will give the haters another stick to beat us with.

Doodledog Wed 29-Dec-21 19:04:19

The virus doesn't respect borders. I can't see what difference it makes, really. So long as people are vaccinated, take tests before going to crowded places and wear masks, why does it matter if they move from Powys to Shropshire, or from the Borders to Cumbria or Northumberland?

Lincslass Wed 29-Dec-21 19:12:06

People will cross borders ,it’s not illegal to travel into different countries of the U.K., unless it’s mandated in law, and policed. Never going to happen. Those who want to risk it will, to celebrate the NY.The worst scenario is those who will do anything to join the throng in London / Edinburgh where the risk is surely higher for even more spread to other parts of the U.K.

Peasblossom Wed 29-Dec-21 19:30:28

It would be good if the Scottish/Welsh services (police, paramedics) also crossed the border to help deal with inevitable increase in incidents if there’s loads more people.

Is anybody offering/requesting/ negotiating do you know?

Oh come on- is this paranoia?

MayBeMaw Wed 29-Dec-21 19:37:51

Kalu

Is this an actual thing you know will happen OP or a what if?

Surely a “What if” ?

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 19:39:46

Judging by the premise of the post MayBeMaw, in this case no, it isn’t paranoia!

Biscuitmuncher Wed 29-Dec-21 19:40:49

What difference will it make!

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 19:43:19

Come to us for the bells this year. Virtually. smile

MayBeMaw Wed 29-Dec-21 19:43:33

It is also possible to resist the temptation to take everything as a personal attack and to play the victim.
I did not interpret OP’s post as anything other than a bit of unnecessary What iffery , I certainly do not feel “beaten with a stick” or look for hidden xenophobia in all places.
Criticism of some Scots does not equate to criticism of all.

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 19:48:23

I'll not rise to it Maw.

There's folk wondering if the North of England will survive the onslaught, that maybe it won't be as bad as they fear. There's those wondering if the rates will rise in a place where the rates are already sky high, if some people visit from a place with lower rates. There's some wondering if the uncontrollable Scots and Welsh will be running rampage in genteel olde England.

No, it's not paranoia. It's experience. sad

Urmstongran Wed 29-Dec-21 19:48:42

Hear hear MawBeMaw ???

Galaxy Wed 29-Dec-21 19:49:38

It us quite difficult with ops previous posting history though.

Josieann Wed 29-Dec-21 19:56:11

I guess like so many other times with this virus we will just have to wait and see what people do and what the consequences are. I just dislike all this gearing up to always look to blame.

Parsley3 Wed 29-Dec-21 19:58:11

Scots wont be rushing to cross the border to celebrate Hogmanay. It is not a thing.

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 19:58:46

Exactly that Galaxy.
