It's just a cold
(278 Posts)I have been constantly worried about the long term effect of covid infection. I read research very early on which detailed the internal organs which can be affected by covid and I haven't seen anything since which contradicts it.
I worry that our very high omicron infection rates, which so many people, including our government, seem to be perfectly happy about, are actually contributing to serious problems for the future. I have been scoffed at on Gnet for this...
I found this long twitter thread. It confirms my fears. It's not written by a medic or a medical scientist, but the cited research mostly seems to be peer reviewed from reputable journals.
I'd very much appreciate comments from people who read the thread.

How impressive Alegrias do you think you could do that for every thread on GN every day? That would stop the rest of us getting it wrong and could halve the number of threads.
You could decide to ban people, in particular those with health concerns, you don't want them bothering people. Job done. I look forward to it.
Your post is a very strange, not to say weird, interpretation of Alegrias' comments. Perhaps you should re-read her post.
Alegrias1, you've misquoted and/or misunderstood me:
'Entreaties to wait just a few more months, until Omicron disappears, as if by magic'
No - to wait a few more months - until the NHS can cope, the infection rate slows (with warmer weather) - and more people have had their vaccinations and booster shots. I thought all that would be obvious - but sadly, it wasn't.

What a sad place GN is today.
Misinformation about non-existent variants. Half-truths about changes to the testing regime. Unfounded speculation that all the rules are about to be abandoned. Entreaties to wait just a few more months, until Omicron disappears, as if by magic.
None of it has any basis in fact whatsoever. So many people just read a headline and jump to conclusions. And people like Candelle are led to believe that they are going to be thrown to the lions. I don't know if its the MSM or random Grans who don't bother to pay attention to the truth and would rather have a bit of a panic and draw everybody else in with them. But whoever it is, they should be ashamed of themselves for causing such worry and alarm.
Well thank goodness for the omniscience of those who keep us all straight.
Instead of feeling shame they can sit back smugly and congratulate themselves on always being right.

Perhaps we should all take an IQ test before we’re allowed to join?
Reading test, maybe?
WOW! The reports about the plans, now temporarily shelved but still very much in discussion, about limiting the availability of LFT, was perfectly READ, and in a variety of media, including several newspapers with a very different background.
And I am afraid, it seems some who denied that testing for vaccinated arriving from abroad or returning from trips abroad, into the UK was true, was indeed in black and white in the link denying it!
So reading skills? Try again. Condescending and rude in the extreme.
Oh no Alegrias something else, report to the Head's door tomorrow morning?
I'm trying to decide whether you're Sarah Gilbert or Sharon Peacock cos you're obviously a scientist and very clever. I'm sure you can work out why I have a username and a username2, I'm not the only one.

You're a funny woman *Jillyjosie". Not funny haha, either.
Why do you have 2 usernames?

Candelle, I totally agree - we probably need just a few more months of restrictions - after nearly two years, that's not too much to ask, surely?
If, then, we're lucky enough to avoid nasty new variants, we might just see the light at the end of the tunnel. I really do hope we won't ruin things and/or be 'thrown to the wolves'.
(But, fear not - if you can just get to planet GN, people are having nice parties and holidays, I hear.
)
So sorry to hear Candelle. Indeed- so much has been sacrificed, we can just wait just a couple of months, and then hopefully we can then 'learn to live with it'.
Hope it all works out for you Candelle.
I am quite saddened by some comments in this thread.
I can assure you that when being given a diagnosis of an illness which requires high amounts of steroids, thus making one immunocompromised, one sees the situation rather differently! This is me, as from last month and thanks very much, I would rather stay alive and not be thrown to the wolves.
Is it really too much to ask for all restrictions to stay in place for a few more months until warmer weather (when Covid dies down?).
I can take rational, appropriate action to look after myself but if all 'rules' should be abandoned, what sort of society have we produced?
Society? It's sad.
Exactly, and we can choose not to go to football matches - but the fans then come back to their families, at work, in public transport, etc.
I know it is outdoors- but packed like sardines and screaming and chanting on and at each other! A lot more dangerous than singing, distanced, in a choir!
I think the government are washing their hands of it all, and I don’t approve. We can of course take as many personal precautions as we like, such a weary a mask and sanitising, but we cannot have any impact on whether or not we are sitting next to a person with Covid on a plane. Or the train. Or a bus.
And yes, I can be bothered. It has cost us a fortune in 2021 for all the tests for our 2 visits- + voluntary LFTs before meeting older relatives. About £1300 - and the cost is a disgrace- because people are making huge sums of money. But I am proud we did all the testing, to keep everyone as safe as possible.
People can now travel to far reaches of the world, and return on hugely long flights- and NOT test before boarding. Irresponsible madness.

Sorry got wires crossed re Lateral Flow Tests.
Please enlighten me- I must have got it wrong then. Are you saying that those coming from abroad, British or foreign- returning from holidays, or whatever- will have to do PCR tests BEFORE travelling to UK (as was the case until just before Christmas).Seriously Kali2, I can't be bothered.

Yes, there it is
If you do qualify as fully vaccinated for travel to England, you do not need to take a test before travel.
we had to take a test before travelling to UK on 18th of December- quite rightly so. We then had to take a second one on day 2. Then another one to travel back- quite rightly so.
The above means that people can go off all over the world, then return by crowded plane, etc- and NO LONGER have to test before returning. Therefore possibly infecting staff at airport and anyone on plane, staff or other passengers.
Thanks for confirming.
The key surely is that only unvaccinated people need to take a test before travelling to the Uk. Vaccinated people can travel inwards freely but must provide a negative test after arrival, on day two I believe. Personally I think a negative test before travel is necessary because a vaccinated person can be positive and can then possibly infect all the passengers and crew on the plane.
The problem is that these non-truths, half-truths are posted on a public forum and could be believed, repeated and gain momentum.
From the Independent, you'll have to make your own mind up whether these fit your personal label of scientist:
JillyJosie
I'm trying to establish in my mind what my personal label of scientist is. There are different branches, each divided into sub-types, specialties, so labelling could be difficult.

Well what do you expect when you are run by ex public schoolboys who lack empathy? They don’t care.
nanna8 I am watching with interest and trepidation the chaos that is emerging in Australia.
I hope that the rising number of cases will prove to be mild ones.
Stay safe.

^tests for coming to the UK after travel are being dropped.^
No, they are not.
For the thousandth time.
Yes, we all know that- talks are going on though. Several of us repeated what The Times, Mail on Line and others had published about this matter- then it was refuted on Sunday morning.
