That's made my day! I'm delighted and relieved.

At last, some sense from the government. Roll on 26th Jan.

Luckygirl3 Wed 19-Jan-22 22:28:57

I am not entirely happy about this.

I note that there has been no wheeling put of the scientists to endorse this in a news conference.

My guess is that it is a last ditch attempt by the ghastly BJ to get his backbenchers off his back in the mess he currently find himself - trying to save his own skin whilst risking ours. What a truly despicable person he really is.

Another reason to continue wearing masks, I believe the efficacy of the booster is something in the region of 10 weeks, I had mine back in October....so wearing off I imagine!

GagaJo Wed 19-Jan-22 21:56:10

With the attitudes towards mask wearing in schools on here, there is no wonder there is a teaching retention crisis. Why stay in a job where no one cares that the people you work with could end up causing the death of you or someone that you love?

All because they 'can't bear' to wear a little piece of paper on their face.

(I've had 14 emails today, with the details of teaching vacancies within a 5 mile radius of me, in my subject. Not a chance that I'll consider going back into a face-to-face teaching job until it's safe.)

Growstuff they are double jabbed, we are all triple jabbed. Their classrooms have the windows own all day. Life is a risk , children do not get very ill one of them has had Covid anyway so have many of their friends and the teachers are also double/triple jabbed ( if they are not it is not my granddaughters problem) . I worry much more about their mental health than Covid these two years have harmed them and enough is enough.

French children have been wearing masks for 18 months. I asked a few what they felt like wearing them at school for all this time. They said that they can’t remember not wearing them and that it would feel funny not to. Children adapt to new situations if allowed to. It is not the case of thinking of self but of community.

Don't be silly, MayBee70. They don't work and it is socially irresponsible to perpetuate the myth that they in any way make people safer by wearing them.

AGAA4 Most people would like to retain them so this has nothing to do with Boris's popularity.

How can you possibly say that they don't work when clinically proven to work when worn properly. Surgeons and theatre nurses have always worn them to protect patients and, even pre covid, to protect themselves from infection when a patient is being barrier nursed if infectious.

I will be hanging on to mine for a while, but it’s got to be good news that’s figures are low enough not to wear masks.

Woodmouse Wed 19-Jan-22 20:03:28

Thank Heaven. I am tempted to burn all of mine!

MayBee70 Wed 19-Jan-22 20:00:22

It’s like, if you have a serious car crash but you’re wearing a seat belt you may not get away totally without injury (whiplash etc) but there’s a much greater chance of not being killed.

Was a bit shocked at the lifting of restrictions but glad some normality returning. We will probably return to it again next winter. Enjoy the freedom.

varian no, they don't

Do you even understand what probability means?

I do know that when our generation went through school, statistics and probability were not part of the school maths curriculum.

First year students at medical school in the 1960s and 1970s had to have a course in basic statistics.

If you are still relying on anecdotal evidence and saying "So and so wore a mask and still got covid" please look at the evidence.

Wearing a mask will not give you 100% protection from being infected, nor will it give you 100% certainty that you will not pass on the virus but, just like vaccination, mask wearing drastically reduces the chances of becoming infected or infecting others.

Thank goodness that children can now be free to learn about facial expressions and empathy, it has been a long time coming. There are children who don`t learn at home about empathy and about reading faces. Wearing masks has been bad for their mental health, no doubt about it

Josieann Wed 19-Jan-22 19:41:59

Thank goodness young primary school children never had to wear face coverings.
I accept masks were probably more important in secondary schools.

I heard on r4 news earlier this morning that face masks are to stay. I am ok with that and despite not finding them comfortable will continue using them. It surely makes sense.

Face masks will no longer be mandatory as restrictions of plan B life next week
But of course face masks can stay if you choose to wear one

When were they ever exactly ‘mandatory’ in the U.K. anyway? Anyone can say they’re exempt - nobody can challenge them - and so many people who do wear them, wear them under their noses or on their chins. I see this every single time I go out, which is often - usually multiple cases, both in shops (including on the staff) and on public transport.
Only today the woman on the till at Sainsbury’s was wearing one under her nose.

We have never been half, or even a quarter as strict, as they are in many other countries.

German shepherd you do whatever you fee you need to do to keep yourself safe. I’ll do whatever I can to make life for granddaughters mentally sound. Children have been penalised to protect people like you and I don’t agree with it

So you think people like Germanshepherdmum don't matter? You don't seem too bothered about your grandchildren either.

Thanks growstuff but obviously I and others like me really don't matter to TwiceAsNice. And there are many with far more precarious health than mine.

The parents of young children with whom I'm in contact are more concerned about sending their children into an environment where Covid is rife than causing their children "mental health" problems from wearing a mask. Those who are in the fortunate position of being able to home-school have chosen that option.

please ask these healthworkers why so many are off with covid - one can only assume it's because they're facemasks don't work

Well, you are wrong to make that assumption. Healthcare workers work long shifts but do you not realise they have a life outside work including a normal family life. My daughter is a nurse and had covid about 15 months ago. Her son contracted it during a school outbreak and shared it with his mum. He was incubating it and had already infected her before his symptoms started. She wears PPE at work but doesn’t wear it at home! ?

growstuff, you seem to be a very fearful person. Thats a shame, it must spoil your quality of life. So much easier to hide behind a mask, than to face your fears

grin grin grin

Nooooo, is this out of the conspiracy theory handbook? My quality of life is just fine, but thanks for the concern.

How nasty. People don't hide behind masks, they use them to keep themselves and others safe.

Sorry, their.

LilacChaser Wed 19-Jan-22 18:32:17

karmalady Brilliant!

growstuff It was me who called you 'I'm all right Jack', not TwiceAsNice. And, yes, I'm a facemask snowflake, but not a covid snowflake.

Again, Barmeyoldbat, please ask these healthworkers why so many are off with covid - one can only assume it's because they're facemasks don't work.

MaizieD Wed 19-Jan-22 18:31:40

all the education they are missing out on, their mental health, etc. All no matter, so long as I'm all right, jack.

Blimey, where have you been, LilacChaser? Children have been back in school since Autumn 2020. What education do children miss out on if wearing a mask?

TwiceAsNice Wed 19-Jan-22 18:31:35

Growstuff again it was not me that said I’m all right Jack. If you cannot post without being unpleasant and aggressive perhaps you shouldn’t post at all.

How do you know how children manage masks in other countries? It is mostly central asian countries who expect this. I’d rather live in a democracy where Im actually allowed an individual opinion instead of being made by the state to do as I’m told

mumofmadboys Wed 19-Jan-22 18:29:13

That's very rude karmalady. Is it really necessary on what is supposed to be a friendly supportive thread?
