Two Years of Keir Starmer. What do we think?

Last year there was a thread asking what people thought about Keir Starmer after he had been the Labour leader for a year.
I thought it might be interesting to see what people think another year later.

I actually voted for him in the leadership election but have since left the Labour party. I don't know what his policies are so can't really judge them. It looks to me, from his enthusiasm about the Conservative who defected to Labour a few days ago, that he is positioning the Labour party as similar to the Conservative party, but not quite as right wing.

Has anyone on here who didn't vote Labour last time been inspired by Keir Starmer to change their mind?

Two Years of Keir Starmer. What do we think? Not a lot!

Any detail ?

Chardy

He's nearly bankrupted the party. He's expelled hundreds of members for criticising Israelis making Palestinians knock down their own houses, calling them Anti-Semitic, (even the Jewish LP members). He's done nothing to criticise the selling-off of the NHS. And he's gone back on each of his own ten pledges.
Nightmare.

Agree

I knew I’d need this one day.

I like the young northern women. There's 2 one with dark hair who gets upset and the long red haired lady. More working class than SIR starmer. I think labour started going wrong when the chose Ed instead of David Miliband. They backed a lame duck there. More than once they have looked devious in their actions. Very off putting. Why are Jews being given a rough ride in the party and why did it go on for so long. It hurt not being able to vote Labour. But I stuck by my principles. They should try it sometime. I'm warming to starmer but he seems upper-class for the Labour party

Socks. Please listen to Keir’s Desert Island Discs. He’s not from a posh family at all.

I left the Labour Party when Corbyn was elected leader. I had voted for Yvette Cooper. Ed Milliband should never have been elected leader either. David M would have been a better bet. I’m not quite ready to rejoin Labour. I find the extreme left difficult. I get the impression they would rather not win elections at all with their current leader. Starmer may be bland but he seems honest and trustworthy. I think he would conduct himself on the world’s stage in the correct manner. I think we’ve all had enough of the Johnsons and trumps of this world.

I’m warming to Keir Starmer, slightly. He does bang on a bit though doesn’t he? He can be a bit, well boring. I tend to zone out when he’s pontificating. But he’s decent. I think the adjective ‘ernest’ suits him best.

But it’s not just him is it?
We’d get the job lot. Angela Rayner, David Lammy. Hopefully not Dianne Abbott. I don’t think she’s on his team. She was for Jeremy. I think he has to stand as an Independent now?

I like Rachel Reeves. Similar age to Rishi Sunak.

But yes I might be tempted. Perhaps. The jury is out.

I think Starmer has done a good job the last 2 years. And the list of pledges WWM2 lists are realistic & I expect to vote for them next time. My only grouse - when he seemed to have no backbone, getting rid of his people and denouncing them on the faintest allegation of antisemitism, when the facts didnt seem to support the allegations. Seems to be a sore point with him, but given how the press & JC played out over that issue, I can see why it might be.

Parsley3 Sat 22-Jan-22 20:29:00

Mrs Starmer and the children are Jewish.

Iam64 Sat 22-Jan-22 21:07:56

Starmer said he wouldn’t tolerate anti semitism. The corbyn supporters call him a Zionist, using the term in a derogatory way of course. They often refer to the fact his wife and children follow the Jewish faith.
He tries to avoid being away from the family on Friday as his wife and her extended family keep shabbat.

valdali Sat 22-Jan-22 21:22:08

That probably explains what was happening, & having a Jewish family doesn't mean he is a Zionist.Maybe there was a sound basis to the antisemitism allegations, if the corbyn supporters are acting like that.
I would vote for him even if he was Zionist, as long as he didn't deny the rights of Palestinians to statehood (of some kind, one day....). If he was on record doing that, would have to be LibDems for me

Like others I think he's playing a cautious game, giving Johnsonet al enough rope to hang themselves. After all labour has a big gap to catch up. At the moment acc. to the link I found the conservatives have 55 more seats than Labour.
At the last election it was the 'Red Wall' tturning blue that was the biggest shock. to me anyway.
And hopefully the preference for leaders with so-called 'charisma' isn't so strong now.
All show and no blow as they used to say.

Does anyone know what Starmer's policies on Pensions and the ever increasing retirement age are?

All I know is he abstained on scrapping the triple-lock on a parliamentary vote...

Grantanow Sun 23-Jan-22 11:21:22

Starmer is a bit vanilla and lacking in charisma but he is a big improvement on the man with the anti-vaxxer brother and on the buffoon currently in No. 10. He is not a patch on Tony Blair but he could do the job. Let's hope the Tories are in self-destruct mode.

Ilovecheese Sun 23-Jan-22 11:37:08

His focus does seem to be on people who work, I've not heard him say anything about people who are unable to work or who are retired.

Grany Sun 23-Jan-22 12:54:58

Starmer and Reeves blocked an activist on twitter for pointing out that a third of their followers were fake that's hundreds of thousands fake followers.

Casdon Sun 23-Jan-22 14:06:36

And your point is Grany?

Grany Sun 23-Jan-22 14:37:33

Did they know they had thousands of fake followers

Grany Sun 23-Jan-22 15:25:57

36 Tory MPs have received £3.6 million from persons named in the Pandora Papers

You know this already of course because Keir Starmer has done such an amazing job for the opposition holding the Tories to account for it. Not.

2.3ml people who receive Universal Credit (over 40%) are in work. They have lost £20 a week; are being subjected to a National Insurance tax rise; and face a massive increase in winter fuel costs.

Currently they have no political voice. It has to change.

Floriel Sun 23-Jan-22 15:39:55

Several people are praising his integrity but I understand that as head of the CPS a decade or so ago Starmer did little to prosecute the wicked gangs who groomed young working-class girls.

You understand quite wrongly then.

I think Keir Starmer has brought some stability to the Labour Party and I think I’d vote for him. I think electability depends very much on what the Tories do next. If BJ goes, his successor has his work cut out to restore any kind of credibility to the government and confidence in the electorate, and I think Starmer needs to use every opportunity he gets to make hay at the expense of the government. People have had enough of Tory sleaze and I’d like to think there’s a real opportunity for Labour here, but an awful lot depends on what happens in the run up to the next election and how long people’s memories are when they get to the ballot box.

Maizie D your patience amazes me. I should aim to be more like you grin
