Its not Boris's fault!

I knew that title would draw you in!

Rory Stewart on why its not only Johnson we should be blaming. A leopard doesn't change its spots.

Boris Johnson is a terrible prime minister and a worse human being. But he is not a monster newly sprung from a rent between this world and the next. Twenty years have passed since the Conservative party first selected him as a candidate. Michael Howard and David Cameron made him a shadow minister, and Theresa May gave him the Foreign Office. Thirty years of celebrity made him famous for his mendacity, indifference to detail, poor administration, and inveterate betrayal of every personal commitment. Yet, knowing this, the majority of Conservative MPs, and party members, still voted for him to be prime minister. He is not, therefore, an aberration, but a product of a system that will continue to produce terrible politicians long after he is gone.

I think that one of the problems with a certain group of (usually) men, is their schooling. I grew up in a town with a prestigious public school, and mixed a little with these teenage boys ( it was a single sex school). They were clear that they were going to be in positions of power, because they were entitled, not because they would be any good at it : they were astonished when local boys and girls, from the local grammar school achieved better results, and, mostly, would have scoredfairly well on a test of emotional intelligence, had there been such things at that time.
However, it mattered not, because they were raised to think that they were the ruling class, and would, of course, be telling the rest of us what to do in the future. Mostly, that has been the case.

Absolutely right about Tory entitlement. Exlains why tory MPs accuse the opposition of 'playing politics' and think that they themselves aren't.

They always do!

Johnson's got Narcissistic Personality Disorder (if you don't know the symptoms, Google it and you'll see he ticks every single box) but I believe he's also actually evil - like Rees-Mogg and Patel and it "boggles my mind" that apparently 34% of the electorate STILL think "he's doing his best" and "he got us through Covid". The Conservative Party in my opinion is itself an evil entity, so it doesn't surprise me that they made him PM. I saw the Rory Stewart video and was quite amazed and impressed.

Love those two picture thanks !

Can you clarify for those less able to understand what you mean, like me

Oops! Totally misread the post and thought it was Rod Stewart - I was wondering when he had suddenly become so politically insightful!!!

I’ve liked Rory ever since he made a series about Cumbria for the BBC. To be fair to him he always made it clear that he would not stay in the party if Johnson was leader and it wasn’t just sour grapes because he beat him in the leadership election. Johnson belongs in the group of weirdo MP’s that have always been around: why the electorate and the party have suddenly decided that these sort of people are fit to run the country is beyond me. (Rees Mogg is another one: he was even touted as a future PM at one point). I think they were just carried forwards on the crest of the tsunami that was brexit.

I blame his parents. If only they’d used contraception.

Beckett

Oh good - I was wondering what had happened to the daily anti-Boris, anti-Tory post hmm

To rent asunder!
It sounds as if he's stepped from an alien world into this one

There could be more of them around!
They may not look like this ?‍♀️?‍♂️ In fact they could look just like you or me!
Or should that be I?

We need more of these ?‍♂️?‍♀️

Callistemon21 Sun 23-Jan-22 14:03:05

Beckett, sorry I meant to ?, that was funny!

He has brought to the fore how terrible our government system is and how much the media and civil service actually run the country

As MaizieD says
But civil servants can only do what the government of the day tells them to do. They can advise on courses of action, they can point out flaws, possible unintended consequences etc, but ultimately it is their job to implement government policies/legislation. They are non political in their professional lives.

The Civil Service don't make the policies, they have to carry out Government policies however much they may disagree with them. They can, of course, advise but they should remain impartial.

SPADS are a different matter; they wield far more influence and are more partisan.

The media don't run the country either - they manipulate the electorate.

Very nicely summed up, Callistemon21. ?

When our Gov sends in the army to murder it’s own citizens, then you can call Johnson a tyrant.

By the time it gets that far it's too late to do anything about it. I'm deeply suspicious of a government that's quite ready to murder other country'citizens, notably those trying to cross the Channel in small dinghies. It's called the thin end of the wedge.

MaizieD Sun 23-Jan-22 15:44:21

Could you give examples of suppression of dissent and of voters, please, maiz

Where have you been hiding out of reach of news of what is going on in Parliament, Baggs.

Suppression of dissent: The Police and Criminal Evidence bill, currently going through Parliament, attempting to give police powers to stop people demonstrating for just about any reason; being noisy, annoying other people, linking arms... With 12 month sentences for offenders..

Voter suppression: The completely unnecessary legislation to impose the requirement for voter ID. It's estimated that it could disenfranchise 1million citizens, mostly the poor, of course, who are least likely to vote tory...

PS. Please don't start derailing the thread on this. It's already been done to death...

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I thought it was an interesting comment from Rory. I don't have much time for him, to be fair, especially since I saw him speak in Glasgow a few years ago and he demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of Scottish politics.

However, I do believe that he is a serious, honest person who does things for the right reasons, even though I don't always agree with him. And I do agree with Rory that everyone knew what Johnson was like but continued to give him more and more power anyway.

There will always be people like Johnson (and Trump) but if the electorate didn't get taken in and vote for him, they'd never get a sniff of power.

So yes, I blame the electorate, his party, and his colleagues who inflicted this charlatan on us.

Don’t think he’s brought out the army to do that either. Absolutely disgusting comment.

He was only voted in because of Brexit !

I blame every idiot that voted for this bunch of clowns.

Not the army, Lincslass, the Royal Navy. And Patel is trying to make it legal for a government agent who causes someone's death in the course of executing their 'duty to be immune from prosecution.
It's not me who is disgusting, it's the government you are defending.

This twitter thread sums up the past week in a way which made me boggle at the craziness of it all and laugh out loud...all at the same time. Hard to believe it's only a week.

It's brilliant that he's back doing these. I used to copy & paste them and post them on here... (not everyone is prepared to 'do' twitter')

He's just about to publish a book, too. grin

Hilarious and very worrying at the same time! You really couldn't make it up.
