Not the army, Lincslass, the Royal Navy. And Patel is trying to make it legal for a government agent who causes someone's death in the course of executing their 'duty to be immune from prosecution.

I thought it was an interesting comment from Rory. I don't have much time for him, to be fair, especially since I saw him speak in Glasgow a few years ago and he demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of Scottish politics.

However, I do believe that he is a serious, honest person who does things for the right reasons, even though I don't always agree with him. And I do agree with Rory that everyone knew what Johnson was like but continued to give him more and more power anyway.

There will always be people like Johnson (and Trump) but if the electorate didn't get taken in and vote for him, they'd never get a sniff of power.

So yes, I blame the electorate, his party, and his colleagues who inflicted this charlatan on us.

Suppression of dissent: The Police and Criminal Evidence bill, currently going through Parliament, attempting to give police powers to stop people demonstrating for just about any reason; being noisy, annoying other people, linking arms... With 12 month sentences for offenders..

Voter suppression: The completely unnecessary legislation to impose the requirement for voter ID. It's estimated that it could disenfranchise 1million citizens, mostly the poor, of course, who are least likely to vote tory...

But civil servants can only do what the government of the day tells them to do. They can advise on courses of action, they can point out flaws, possible unintended consequences etc, but ultimately it is their job to implement government policies/legislation. They are non political in their professional lives.

The Civil Service don't make the policies, they have to carry out Government policies however much they may disagree with them. They can, of course, advise but they should remain impartial.

SPADS are a different matter; they wield far more influence and are more partisan.

The media don't run the country either - they manipulate the electorate.

I’ve liked Rory ever since he made a series about Cumbria for the BBC. To be fair to him he always made it clear that he would not stay in the party if Johnson was leader and it wasn’t just sour grapes because he beat him in the leadership election. Johnson belongs in the group of weirdo MP’s that have always been around: why the electorate and the party have suddenly decided that these sort of people are fit to run the country is beyond me. (Rees Mogg is another one: he was even touted as a future PM at one point). I think they were just carried forwards on the crest of the tsunami that was brexit.

Johnson's got Narcissistic Personality Disorder (if you don't know the symptoms, Google it and you'll see he ticks every single box) but I believe he's also actually evil - like Rees-Mogg and Patel and it "boggles my mind" that apparently 34% of the electorate STILL think "he's doing his best" and "he got us through Covid". The Conservative Party in my opinion is itself an evil entity, so it doesn't surprise me that they made him PM. I saw the Rory Stewart video and was quite amazed and impressed.

Absolutely right about Tory entitlement. Exlains why tory MPs accuse the opposition of 'playing politics' and think that they themselves aren't.

I think that one of the problems with a certain group of (usually) men, is their schooling. I grew up in a town with a prestigious public school, and mixed a little with these teenage boys ( it was a single sex school). They were clear that they were going to be in positions of power, because they were entitled, not because they would be any good at it : they were astonished when local boys and girls, from the local grammar school achieved better results, and, mostly, would have scoredfairly well on a test of emotional intelligence, had there been such things at that time.
However, it mattered not, because they were raised to think that they were the ruling class, and would, of course, be telling the rest of us what to do in the future. Mostly, that has been the case.
