Foreign secretary Liz Truss flew by private jet to Australia at a cost of over half-a-million pounds to the taxpayer because she chose not to use scheduled business-class flights.

Rather than travelling from London to Sydney on one of the daily Qantas departures, Ms Truss insisted on flying the 22,000 miles to, from and within Australia on the private government Airbus A321.

I wonder what language he would use on the way down?

Squiffy Thu 27-Jan-22 17:11:21

Surprised that nobody has mentioned the treasonous touching of the Queen by Republican Keating... hmm

Orf with his head!

Every cloud has a silver lining! Even if it is finding a nugget of information.

It took off two hours after the regular Qantas departure from Heathrow, which went nonstop to Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory and continued to Sydney
I didn't know there was a non-stop flight to Darwin!

This was just mentioned on the radio, thought that I had misheard. It's unbelievable in the current climate, not to mention the massive contribution of carbon to the atmosphere and £500k to the public purse. Never mind let's cut universal credit, that should work.

Thatcher was an ex-PM once. So was Churchill.

I don't think saying Keating is an ex-PM is really a valid criticism, is it?

In your eyes maybe not. Blair is an ex PM, I don’t rate anything he says either.

Liz Truss, 2009.

This is weird. ?

He hasn't been PM of Australian for quarter of a century. He was voted out.

No, this really is weird. That's the Daily Express for you.

Yes, but some of our ex-Prime Ministers are always ready to voice an opinion too.

The Foreign Secretary of a country with over 2000 food banks has spent £500,000 of taxpayers money on a private jet.

John Major has voiced his opinions of the current Tory government in terms with which I can't help agreeing.

“£2,000 on Japanese meals
£3,000 on private club lunches
£500,000 on a private plane to Australia.
Liz Truss seems to be as tone deaf as Boris Johnson when it comes to her spending. Yet she wants to be Prime Minister?”

Perhaps BA was fully booked?

Casdon Thu 27-Jan-22 19:20:27

William and Kate use BA more and more now, mindful of the environmental implications of private planes, and I’m sure they have an entourage. Is the Government more entitled in the way they behave than the Royals? This trip by Liz Truss would have been planned months ago, there’s no doubt at all that seats on a commercial flight could have been secured.

Guess she's a shoo in then. Given that greed and inability to lead seemsto be the order of the day for Conservative voters.

If Liz Truss had used Qantas she might have won 'The Bundie Blonde' category for that flight and won a (half) bottle of Bundaberg Rum!

Very sexist but my DD (and we) enjoyed the rum ?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 27-Jan-22 19:27:40

Still don’t know what happened to the £37billion.

varian Thu 27-Jan-22 19:31:03

There is something about Ms Truss that reminds me of Marie Antoinette.

Coastpath Thu 27-Jan-22 20:36:31

I don't know why she couldn't pay for it herself. She must have made a fortune out of that Eats, Shoots and Leaves book. grin

Callistemon21 Thu 27-Jan-22 20:40:20

That was her sister!

I have it on my bookshelf ?

Sarnia Fri 28-Jan-22 08:34:32

If Boris goes then Truss will throw her hat in the ring for the next PM. Heaven help us! This lot are all the same. Oh for a decent, honest politician or is that an oxymoron?

NotSpaghetti Fri 28-Jan-22 08:53:19

Petera it was 2007, apparently,
In a dissertation:

Truss has long been an advocate for eliminating waste in the government. In 2007, she wrote a dissertation for a reform think tank that claims civil servants fly in economy class. “All public sector workers should feel personal responsibility for the money they spend and the money they save,” she wrote.

“They should at least spend the taxpayer’s money with the care they would give themselves. This change in thinking is reflected in everyday changes such as traveling in the economy rather than in business class. “

Another delightful benefit of Brexit! How we shall all delight in watching MPs using 'the gov jet' to go on a jolly in the name of trade to the other side of the world. While we sit back and admire this fantastic approach to trade, let us reconcile this cost with the 14.5m living in poverty in the UK (Joseph Rowntree precovid figure)!
