In the Met where one in three officers are women, the culture of misogony seems rife:
- between 2019 and 2020, 160 officers in the Met were accused of sexual assault, harassment and sexual abuse.
- recently a Met detective was jailed for 19 insistences of voyeurism and another officer is facing 29 offences against 8 women including rape.
- a concerning number of officers have been exposed as domestic abusers, two have been jailed for sharing photos of the scene where two women were murdered.
- this week’s significant report by the Independent Office for Police Conduct severely criticised the Met police for its discriminatory, harmful and abusive attitudes. What is even more worrying is the report highlighted the reluctance due to fear, for officers to speak out against such attitudes.
- the horrific treatment and killing of Sarah Everard and the unnecessary violence shown by that police force to the silent demonstration about her death, has done little to restore any trust!
How sad is this for the future recruitment of women into the police!
