Sadiq Khan

I am not usually his biggest fan but he has a right to be outraged. When Sarah Everard was murdered Cressida Dick vowed to root out the racist, mysogenistic and homophobic Met Police officers in her force. No stone was going to be left unturned, apparently. Understandably, Sadiq Khan wants to know why 9 of the 14 police officers based at Charing Cross and found to be guilty of such conduct are still working. So do I.

*Khan

Kahn is quoted;
" to root out the racism, sexism, homophobia, bullying, discrimination and misogyny that still exists".

Not a solitary mention about "crime"...and people voted for this bloke - good God!!

She lacked humanity, no leadership at all.

I am not a Londoner but I'm interested in the comments about Khan - mostly they seem to be from people who don't like the idea of a London mayor.

I'm fairly well acquanted with the failings (and indeed successes) of the previous two - are people saying that Khan is worse than Livingstone or Johnson?

AGAA4 that made me smile - thank you. Have you seen the Led By Donkeys mock investigation? The LoD team arrive at the Met and interview Cressida Dick, brilliant.

I was sympathetic to CD but the Charing Cross scandal, the fact 9 of those officers remain in post, 1 promoted finished it for me. She had to resign

AGAA4 Thu 10-Feb-22 20:18:43

Ted from Line of Duty should be appointed. He would soon sort them out.

Seriously a strong moral character is needed. No more limp lettuces.

Who’s to say the next one will be any better? I would hope they are but it could be more of the same.

Who appoints them? I admit to ignorance on this matter.

I really like Sadiq Khan as he seems so genuine and on the ball. Similarly I like Andy Burnham, but he has been 'tainted' by being a Blairite. I wonder if Blair still casts a spell over the Labour party.

Riverwalk
She shouldn’t have been in the position in the first place.
She’s been as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike ?

Riverwalk Thu 10-Feb-22 19:45:04

She should have gone in September but was given a two-year extension, probably because there was no one else was up to the job!

Maybe the net will be cast wider.

MerylStreep Thu 10-Feb-22 19:15:50

She’s resigned ????

Callistemon21 Thu 10-Feb-22 19:05:56

One down ..........

Callistemon21 Thu 10-Feb-22 19:04:37

Oh!

Well, not surprised.
There have just been too many incidents on her watch.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 10-Feb-22 19:03:17

Dick to resign.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 10-Feb-22 10:43:02

I would just like to add that Khan, whilst withdrawing his confidence, has no actual power to get Dicks to resign. That must come from the Home Office.

Johnson withdrew his confidence from the Police commissioner (can’t remember his name) and in those days (pre- ghastly Johnson premiership) the commissioner resigned.

Callistemon21 Thu 10-Feb-22 09:55:35

It was Mrs Thatcher who abolished the Greater London Council in an act of political spite, and this paved the way for the Tory Party to introduce elected city mayors.

It wasn't surprising, though, after the shenanigans that went on in the GLC when "Red" Ken Livingstone somehow managed to oust the democratically elected Labour leader.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 10-Feb-22 09:49:17

The police carry out their job, in theory at least, independent of politicians.

However, the head of the Met is a political decision, and the mayor of London gives their support to the police commissioner, until unfortunately they no longer feel that support is tenable.
That is what May happen in Dicks case.

In my opinion, she should never have been given the job after the debacle of the de Menzies case when she was in command of the operation.

Since her attaining the commissioners job in 2017, there has been failure after failure with the culture of the Met mired deeply in misogyny, bullying, racism homophobia leading to a huge loss of confidence by the people from whom the police expect consent to carry out their policing work. Nevertheless The Home Office saw fit to re-employ her at the end of last year.

Khan is right in demanding that Dick should come up with a clear plan as to how she intends to tackle the major issues which have become endemic over a period of time.

In my opinion, the Met needs a complete clear out and re-think.

As the mother of a serving police officer (albeit in a very specialised role) I can tell you there are many, many police officers of both sexes that are outraged, disappointed, ashamed and more of these Charing Cross personnel. Cressida Dick has been promoted way above her credentials, Sadiq Khan is on a par with all previous London Mayors, utterly useless and a waste of space. His hypocritical management of London traffic ULEZ and support, nay more than that actual promotion, of the Silvertown Crossing are totally incompatible. Sadiq was backing Cressida as recently as January 2022, and has always backed her until now endorsing her 2 year extension in position. London does not need a mayor, a GLC authority would be far better, just remove the vanity role, Livingstone, Johnson, Khan no added value from any of them.

Excellent post. I have a serving police officer in my extended family too. It's so frustrating when people like Khan and Dick have such powerful roles and do nothing to bring about positive improvements.

Well said Rosie51. I was shocked when both Khan and Dick were instated in their present roles, as it was patently obvious they would be useless. Even I could see that. And so it has come to pass. Cressida Dick totally lacks any leadership qualities, you can see that just by hearing her and seeing her. She looks and sounds weak. But it seems she may be on her last legs now. A strong man or a Thatcher-like woman is needed to bring order and control, but I'll bet they get another woke someone.

Sadiq Khan was democratically elected not instated.

It was Mrs Thatcher who abolished the Greater London Council in an act of political spite, and this paved the way for the Tory Party to introduce elected city mayors.

Hetty58 Thu 10-Feb-22 08:07:17

Katie59, we shouldn't 'have sympathy - we should expect the highest standards of behaviour instead.

We have a detective in the family, who says there's an ongoing problem with the police attracting the 'wrong' candidates.

Zero tolerance of any racist, misogynistic etc. attitudes and behaviour is the only answer.

Katie59 Thu 10-Feb-22 07:48:49

Not a great leader for sure but treading the line between politics and policing is not an easy one. Although we have laws the police have to take into account public opinion when enforcing them, so it’s often not black or white.

I have sympathy with the police on the ground, many see them as the enemy rather than friends and routinely abuse them. They are human they make mistakes, dealing with criminals day by day is going to influence their behavior and attitudes.

Pepper59 Thu 10-Feb-22 00:26:28

Cressida Dick has been promoted way above her capabilities. It's been one disaster after another, she should resign.

She needs to grab hold of Doris and they can both ride off into the sunset together…
