No, it was a decision by the MET police based on the rules for providing public money funded security for Royalty. And not letting him pay is because of rules around not being able to "buy" publicly funded security provided by the Police! The Police are not for sale!!

The Royal Family were not involved in the decision, as the MET security decisions making takes precedence over individual preference. That is why Andrew was evidently a night mare to protect because he was so bloody minded about it, and expected security officers to obey orders rather than defer to their superior security knowledge. It is why Diana used to try to sneak out without security because they wouldn't always follow her wishes. It is also why many working Royals only get security when they are on Royal Duty ...and Harry and Family are no longer working Royals!!

I'm sure he does know that maddyone but why let yet another opportunity to be in the limelight and make out how badly done too you are, pass by.

In fairness to Harry, he has said he wants to pay for the Metropolitan Police security, but I imagine he knows full well that the Met Security is not for hire by individuals, other than for large public functions. Otherwise every celebrity from around the world would want to hire them. As the Metropolitan Police and their special security unit are paid for by the public, that couldn’t be allowed as it would take police away from their other duties. Security is provided quite rightly for the Queen, the direct heirs to the throne which means Charles and Camilla, and William and his family. Also to the Prime Minister and all ex Prime Ministers.

They have two choices, make a public performance out of a visit without the kind of security they want or arrive quietly with no fuss. As others have said, no one needs to know about the visit until they've left and if they really just want the Queen to see her GGC before it's too late, why does the rest of the world have to know about it too.

Ahhh GSM I was slated yesterday for saying those very words. You are a brave woman to bring up that truth, but of course it is the truth.

I think he would like to be a normal person free to come and go but the media and some very nasty people would not allow it He must have his mums treatment very much in the top of his mind He has said he will pay

Yes, I think a lot of hatred for him stems from a sense of betrayal that people feel against him. We are a country that has had Royalty play a large part in our lives and Harry is of a new generation that doesn't feel the same way and seeing how his mother was treated and the hatred that has been shown towards his American wife (which makes me feel ashamed to be British tbh) I don't blame him for wanting security when he comes to Britain.

Private planes can land in private places. How amazing that world leaders have made visits to troops in war zones with nobody knowing anything about it until they were safely back home.
Of course Harry will be hounded if he shows his face here. He isn’t welcome after the way he’s behaved. I wish he would get the message.

Having said that, it’s been reported that Meghan has said she never wants to set foot in Britain again. If true, why the fuss about protection?

Absolutely, why not?

I think the balcony appearance might be a step too far, but surely the Queen would like to have ALL her family around her on public view at some point during the celebrations. Harry and his family will need to move from A to B for official photos, for the service at St.Paul's, or in a carriage down The Mall. etc. But I agree that the British police aren't going to allow anyone take a pop at him anyway.

I disagree Janamax. If he really wants to see his grandmother, he and his family could easily slip into the country under the radar, go and visit her, and slip back out again without anyone knowing they have been.

He and Meghan have enough incredibly wealthy friends, who could loan them private jets, and they could travel between the landing airport and whichever Royal home the Queen is at, by a car with blacked out windows, and the same in reverse.

His family is only at risk if he fanfares his movements. They could be as anonymous as they wish - but I don't suppose they are yearning for anonymity.

He was hounded by the press when he was here last year and allegedly having access to someone's private jet won't stop the press. Diana, was hounded by the press when she was on a private yacht and she was in a private car when she was killed whilst being chased by the press. Having access to private planes is no protection from a determined press wanting a scoop in my opinion.

I really think this highlights the amount of money we have to pay to support this establishment and maybe it should be more pared down in general after the Queen?

Do all non working royals get 24hr security? What happened to his mother was down to bad judgement and a failure on her part by not wearing a seat belt.

As it stands Harry can well afford to pay for his own security. Let’s face it how long is he intending to stay?

He has, like his mother before him, been perfectly prepared to use journalists/media when it suits to get a story out and also found ways to keep stuff quiet when it suited.

No wonder the poor Queen has lost weight!

If she is anything like mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers on GN, she must lie awake at night fretting over the various members of her family who constantly give her huge anxiety.

Harry seems determined to cause trouble wherever he can. If he is just starting to realise that his GM is a very old lady and unlikely to see his children again, he should have thought through all his actions earlier on.

You cannot tell me that he would have done all this without Meghan’s influence.

We all lose weight as we get older and the Queen is no exception - she is 95 yrs old.

As you say, all Grandmother's (and Grandfathers) worry about their families, I know that I certainly do but that doesn't include wanting them to come to harm just because they have upset us. All he has to do is keep his visit purely private. No need to be seen in public. No additional security needed. He is a private citizen and as was said on an earlier thread our police are not available for hire by private citizens.
