Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

Totally agree Whitewavemark2

It appears the EU is finding out what it’s power is capable of

I think your statement above is rather over egging the pudding.

The EU has no power when it comes to China. China is not bothered by it or the U.K. Russia might have held some sway, but in my opinion that’s dwindling as they can see the rest of the world uniting against it.

The USA under a strong presidency would have limited sway not sure about the current POTUS ?

From a friend today

*What kind of human being invents a 'Thermo Baric' bomb that cam stuck the oxygen out of a person's lungs while demolishing an entire city block?
Why would they do that?
Why?* *and clusterbombs*

Sadly bombs have always done this. People were found after the bombing of our cities with nothing apparently wrong. They died of what was then called "bomb blast" which pushed the air out of the lungs.

I think these are even worse because the extra oxygen drawn in creates a fire storm. I think they are talking about the Russian use of these bombs being considered as a War Crime but I haven't confirmed that for myself yet.

Whitewavemark2 summed up perfectly in your last sentence, China dictates to the EU….

That’s all very well but I don’t see Biden or Johnson beating a path to their door.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Mar-22 08:40:14

War is a dirty business however it’s conducted.

There are absolutely no guarantees regarding civilian casualties. The aggressor (in this case Present Putin) just doesn’t care about anything other than the objective which is to reinstate Ukraine as part of Russia.

He and his generals are already guilty of war crimes.

Iam64 I'm sure (in fact certain) that Kali2 can speak for herself but people seem very quick to jump on this. She was not saying, as a far as I understood, that we want 2 armies in a field facing each other she was saying that it if war had to happen this was preferable to indiscriminate civilian bombing (i.e. she said better not best). The point is arguable, even though the statistics of the proportion of the ratio of civilian to military casualties in conflicts over the centuries have been shown to be unreliable.

But just put it the other way round: if 2 armies facing each other in a field is not the better option then that implies that what’s happening now is the better option.

Because they have to have a meeting with 27 countries before they can have a meeting with one country. ?

The EU is meeting with China next month to dispel tensions, over Ukraine.

It appears that the EU is finding out what it’s power is capable of.

Why are the EU waiting until next month (April) to meet with China?

They should be meeting now

Yes of course but China has dictated the date

Rather than bickering about who sells the most arms on an open forum we should be united agains the Russian President who over night has bombed a maternity hospital, a veterans rehabilitation centre along with multiple civilian homes on the outskirts of Kyiv.

There is at this very moment a 40 mile convoy of Russian armed military tanks and weaponry on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Iam64 Tue 01-Mar-22 08:17:24

Yes arms are obscene, as is bombing civilians. World peace and no arms trade would be wonderful. It won’t happen because we need to defend ourselves in the event a despot decides to invade and join our country to his empire.
As for the idea that 2 armies facing each other in a field is a better option - nonsense

www.reuters.com/world/europe/neutral-swiss-adopt-sanctions-against-russia-2022-02-28/
Switzerland has abandoned its neutrality and adopted EU sanctions against Russia.

Katie59 Tue 01-Mar-22 07:26:58

Putin wasn’t expecting the Ukrainians to resist so determinedly, certainly not to defend the cities street by street which appears to be happening. Russia is certainly capable of taking Kiev by force but the death and destruction will be horrendous.

This is not what the Russians expected, who will back down?.

Hello world, Kyiv reporting in.

Fresh snow is settling on the ground. The invaders have not breached the barricades.

We are still here.

We will remain here.

“We are witnessing the emergence of a global power in this crisis: the European Union. I was confident that a Russian invasion w/d be a shock to Europe and lead to a robust response. But never w/d I have predicted the announcements from Germany, EU, and others. Truly stunning.”

I'll ask a second question.... what kind of Government permits an arms fair that allows organisations of many descriptions to purchase such horrendous weapons?

Switzerland?
There are two this year.

We see today what happens when war is fought from the air with technology - and what happens to civilians!

Give me two armies in a big field, any day.

Give me two armies in a big field, any day.

Really?

Give me peace, international respect and understanding.

I'll ask a second question.... what kind of Government permits an arms fair that allows organisations of many descriptions to purchase such horrendous weapons?

And some on GN will say it's OK, because it employs many people. And it is sick, totally.
