Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

What do you think will happen if we "appease"? Do you think he'll toddle off home and leave us in peace?

This is not the time for cowards.

Take him out, take out all the cowards around him and free the Russian people too.

I agree.

I've not seen any news as we were looking after a grandchild who was worried enough by what she'd overheard from her friend's parents

Take him out, take out all the cowards around him
Have just seen a friend too who is a devout Christian and she, surprisingly, said she would be in favour of that too.
He's satanic

I know Callistemon. I'm what would normally be called a leftie liberal on here. But take him out. Take all of them out. I suspect there is a lot more going on in that direction than we are being told about.

Zelensky won’t agree to not join NATO. Even though NATO are nowhere near allowing Ukraine to join. If you watch the bit of his inaugural speech that is circulating on Twitter there is a lot of mention of being European. It’s moving but I can see why Putin hated it.

The biggest danger seems to be that Putin wants the old USSR back. Never mind what the people living in the old Eastern bloc countries want. That does make me worry. He seems consumed with hatred and nostalgia with no-one around him to remind him it’s 2021.

I am very, very concerned.

Also very pleased I’m not the one making decisions. But I’m so unsure about what to even do to attempt to buffer my household

I can only imagine how Ukrainians are feeling.

It has been decided finally that all EU airspace is banned to the Russians including private craft owned by the oligarchs. But what now is the UK doing about sea ports, there is a big oil tanker due in Orkney on Tuesday?

I read a bit ago that Orcadians are up in arms about it but cannot deny it entry unless the UK government ban it.

When there is a will there is a way.
The boat is another form of transferring money and monetary swift system has been stopped by many countries.

Apparently some of the oligarchs charter their jets through shell companies, so difficult to trace who is getting the use of them. And would the government pursue them?

There have been a few twitter threads of aviation buffs monitoring the movements of some of these jets. Lots of flights taking in Moscow or terminating there.

I suspect that the government has been so slow to act that a lot of Russian assets and money will have been moved out of the UK. Apart from the land and houses.

varian Sun 27-Feb-22 17:58:08

Can we seize the land and houses?

Can we seize the land and houses?

Could we house Ukrainian refugees in these houses?

Are the oligarchs all rushing back to Moscow? If so what would that indicate? That they were not here because they were fearful of the Russian regime?

varian Sun 27-Feb-22 18:09:10

Some of these houses are indeed enormous and could house quite a large number of Ukranian refugees.

mokryna Sun 27-Feb-22 18:09:14

I like the idea, Ukrainian refugees being housed in oligarchs empty houses.

Jaberwok Sun 27-Feb-22 18:15:08

The trouble with appeasement is that the appeased always want more. So we back off Ukraine under the threat of nuclear weapons, next stop Poland , Romania, the Baltics, so again we back off, again and again until we get to? East Germany, then what?! So appeasement is a clear NO, NO, BUT? If Putin is so worried at having NATO on Russia's doorstep, then why doesn't he do what we have done in the Falklands, that is to build a military base or two inside his own border, so IF NATO behaves aggressively (as if!) he would have enough firepower to repel any attack while bringing up reinforcements. No need to attack anyone, but taking defensive precautions for his own peace of mind.

I've been watching the swallows swoop and fly but we are not even sure they are swallows as we are both generally a bit preoccupied with trying to cope with mainstream life smile

I haven't seen a swallow for a long while. We have had swifts though.
Are they swallows? They're back early from their hols. as they usually come back in April

Tits swoop, I like watching them, they swoop across our garden, eat next door, nest a few doors away. For some reason they don't like our food or our nest box. Fussy little things!

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Feb-22 20:15:53

I could come and drink a gin and bring my binoculars.

Callistemon21 Sun 27-Feb-22 20:27:47

Sorry to be flippant.

I am, in fact, very anxious and it's a diversion.

Iam64 Sun 27-Feb-22 20:42:46

I’m with you nezumi65, I want him taken out, along with those close to him who share his desire for the resurrection of the old USSR
JaneJudge, I’ve got s pack of feverview tonic and a bottle of special gin. Can I join your greenhouse support group

I have just been watching Sky News with some expert talking about this awful weapon seen in Ukraine but not used yet. I suppose it’s the thermo one but just one is capable of wiping out a city the size of London or Washington. Apparently Lukashenko of Belarus is stating the sanctions are pushing Russia into the nuclear option. I have also just found out Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. I didn’t know that. 4500 warheads! Just why?

It feels as if he’s been building this up for years in readiness for this time. Just chilling. It’s a terrifying thought. We all know that governments have bunkers stocked with supplies. The people would bear the brunt and that evil monster would be in his bunker. Like others the world over I hope and pray he’s taken out internally.
