Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

Which to me seems he is caught between denouncing his mafiosi boss and getting poisoned and love of his wealth and western freedoms ... so he wriggles like a worm and tries to save Chelski from sanctions or confiscation.

Interesting how this might pan out.

Roman Abramovich has dramatically relinquished the running of Chelsea FC in an attempt to distance the club from the controversy surrounding him as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the calls for him to be sanctioned.

Abramovich will remain as Chelsea’s owner and, providing he is not sanctioned, can still invest money into the club. But he has handed the running and decision making to the trustees of the club’s charitable foundation.

I like Yvette Cooper’s stance. ✅

Sorry to report that @ukhomeoffice is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa. If there even is one.

What a small ugly country we are becoming.

Priti Patel's parents, I believe, fled persecution from (or were maybe expelled?) Uganda's Idi Amin. They were allowed to come here as asylum seekers.

In this context, her stance as Secretary of State, is abhorrent.

No words…sad

Our country should be welcoming Ukranian refugees, especially those with family in the UK.

If our Home Secretary is not granting these people refuge in the UK, she is letting us all down.

Curlywhirly Sat 26-Feb-22 20:33:28

Words fail me; just what is WRONG with this Government? I'm so ashamed of their lack of compassion for these poor people.

I see slippery Abramovich is trying to secure his assets away from sanction.

It should not be allowed.

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN Security Council proposed a draft resolution instructing Moscow to stop the attack and withdraw all troops immediately.

Led by the US and Albania, the resolution “deplored” Russian aggression in Ukraine.

China, not surprisingly, abstained as did the UAE by WHY did India abstain?

Of course, it only needed one vote to vetoe it and the aggressor, Russia, vetoed the resolution to instruct them to stop the attack and withdraw its troops!

Grany

People across Russia who have stood up in protest against their country’s invasion of Ukraine are winning praise from politicians in the UK and across the world.

What a stark contrast with the reaction of – for example – UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, who has forced 11 of his MPs to withdraw their protest against the war under threat of losing the party whip!

All of these protests if they took place in the UK, would soon be illegal under the Tory government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts legislation that is currently working its way through Parliament.

And it seems Labour’s current leadership tacitly supports such suppression; here’s how Starmer reacted to his MPs’ exercise of their right to free speech:

Yes, it seems he demanded that they withdraw their signatures from a statement by the Stop the War Coalition, condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The statement itself is straightforward:

So you agree with Corbyns anti NATO comments? And how can I reply to people that now say to me ‘isn’t it a good job that Corbyn isn’t PM at the moment’. Because I don’t have an answer do I?

We need to welcome Ukrainian refugees, especially the many with families in the UK.

Just seen a news report saying that Italy has successfully negotiated a ‘carve out’ in sanctions imposed on Russia, to exempt luxury leather goods. Words fail me.

Iam64 Sat 26-Feb-22 18:42:08

Grany - never make a positive contribution, always take the opportunity to criticise Starmer. Those 11 MPs were sprouting the usual mo entire nonsense, blaming NATO, saying Russia was being provoked by ‘fascist troupes on its borders’. Only after Putin began his murderous invasion of a peaceful country did they back pedal. Talk about naive or ignorant?

But Europe is not disunited. They all condemn what's going on in Ukraine and are sending all sorts of aid and armaments to help. Germany and Italy are holding out against removing Russia's access to the SWIFT banking system but I gather even Germany is changing its position on this. The unity of the West is heartening.

Totally agree, the whole of Europe and the majority of world leaders are for once united, together for one purpose.

DaisyAnne Sat 26-Feb-22 18:22:58

Dickens, I think we are rather more than a "late starter". We are what we have always been under Tories, disorganised and unready.

Ukraine is under fire. People are fleeing war

Yet Home Office still applies normal visa restrictions inc salaries, language, close relatives

This isn’t solidarity w Ukraine, it’s immoral

Govt must urgently provide simple sanctuary route to UK for Ukrainians who need our help

Well said Yvette. Now I would welcome her into government. Our behaviour on visas is disgusting but sadly not suprising.

a few of the eu countries are showing themselves to be cowards, nothing new there. This war could be snuffed out if they showed the braveryof the uk

btw, I have direct family experience of kgb, russian invasion etc but I am saying no more. Actions speak very much louder than words and I am not talking about cups of tea and clothes

Could you explain where you see the "bravery of the UK" and why you see bravery lacking elsewhere?

This "my experience is worse than your experience" game is not worth the candle. Certainly not if you are not going to explain and point out why it is relevant.

Looks as if SWIFT is going to be withdrawn with limitations.

Wait and see

I’ve said this on another thread I think but I saw a young Russian friend today, she could not stop crying. She said she was so shocked and saddened by Putins actions.

I do wish we could have another Russian Revolution and Putin and his sidekicks could be deposed, imprisoned and the key thrown away.
?
Russians are dying too, not just the military but ethnic Russians who live in Ukraine.
Surely at some point the military themselves might start to think that this is wrong?

I think most will go to Poland, Hungary, Romania, Latvia (understandably) - these countries are preparing - some for the 'undocumented'.

Maybe we're just a late starter... unless Patel has decided to keep these restrictions, regardless. Or been ordered to do so.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is proving so unpopular that several Russian MPs are withdrawing their support for the Kremlin.

That is good news.
