Bottom line is we can’t risk starting a nuclear war. If it wasn’t nuclear it would be chemical. If it wasn’t chemical......... . Peace of some sort must prevail. So this means diplomacy, truce, agreement, sacrifice of land, of pride , of honour.
Is this right ? Or do we fight with all our might and risk annihilation? The world only stays safe with a balance of power and now we have MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction.
We want gas, oil, to fuel our lives and destroy our planet on the way. Over reliance on Russia and China over many years now and not challenging their takeover or treatment of minorities or of ‘annexation’ of countries , their annihilation or dissidents and opposition, has led to this . We are perceived as weak. While we have been bickering over Brexit and vaccines they have been laughing and planning . Putin will not stop he does not care about death only power.

Frightening and tragic for Ukrainians who now, very sadly, have no chance in this unequal fight.

Sadly I agree with you Marymary. I fear all is lost and this is the beginning of the end for these courageous people.

Oh my goodness these posts are so thought provoking and I must watch War of the Dictators. My father was killed in the Hitler war 5 weeks before I was born . My mother, towards the end of the war met and fell in love with a Polish air force officer who was very keen to go back to Poland to help rebuild that shattered country taking my mother and me with him. My maternal grandparents were apparently absolutely horrified and did everything they could to dissuade her from this step into the unknown. It was eventually decided that Thaddeus would go on his own and we would follow later. This of course didn't happen, who knows why, but I suspect the Russians shot him as they did to so many returning Poles. My mother later met and married someone else and we lived happily near Oxford. After my mother died, in her personal processions was a photo and a few mementos of Thaddeus. She clearly never forgot him.

77 year old Russian woman, Yelena Osipova, protesting against the war is arrested and taken away by two burly policeman in St Petersburg. They really are brave, aren't they. I hope their mothers, if they have any, are thoroughly ashamed of them:-

They certainly are brave, no two ways about that, heroically so, but I fear Russia will overwhelm Ukraine and subjugate that country as it has done to other neighbours. It's terrible and terrifying. Those poor people, those children, appalling.

Putin doesn't care about harming children - Russian children have been arrested for protesting as well as old women.

Jaberwok. Your post brought tears to my eyes. My son and I were watching Sky News earlier just after that monster Putin had been speaking and the pictures of all the devastation in Ukraine; the burning buildings and rubble, and we both said the same thing. “Why would anyone want to do this?”

So terribly sad.

Thank you tickingbird, war and the consequences of war are so shocking that it's almost incomprehensible that anyone would entertain starting one. Nobody but a mad person would ever inflict that sort of suffering on any nation , but, like Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Stalin and so on, Putin would appear to be unstable, (and that's being polite), and we are where we are. Short of shooting him I fear for where this will end.

oh yes - but this is not what is happening now. And YES, in war, I'd rather have 2 armies fighting it out in a field- then civilians torn to pieces in their sleep from the air.

Clive was looking very tired last night. Those scary nights taking their toll.

I didn’t know, as I hadn’t read my Facebook page, that church bells were ringing out in support of Ukraine in French towns this evening. I had my windows’s shut, so didn’t hear them.

What a good way to show solidarity with Ukraine to ring the Church bells.
We took donations of the items specified as needed to our local Ukrainian centre today. There were queues of people doing the same. All of us wishing we could do more

I understand that in some countries they also switched off all their house lights to show putin they’d rather do without his gas and oil

If you have an ISA or other investment, check which shares are held in it.
Mine had shares in GazProm so I sold it yesterday. It wasn't worth that much anyway, had been dismal for quite some time but I couldn't, in all conscience, keep it.

It is very worrying to know the Russians are either ignorant or unknowingly shelling a nuclear plant. I hope there is a big protest at the Para Olympic Games.
