How could they rubysong? They made it clear that Ukraine would not be able to join currently because of the issues on it's boarders. However, NATO is made up of demoncratic countries and the Ukraine is a demoncratic country - at least at this moment in time. It has the right to say that it hoped to join NATO in the future.

It's position between Russia and the rest of Europe, which affects the rest of the free world, is as important to us as the hoped for protection of NATO is to them.

Why do you think it right to tell a democratic country they must act in a way they don't chose too?

As a principle, Germany has a policy of not sending weapons to crisis zones. It's a result of policies imposed on Germany after WW2.

I agree with Jabberwok I think NATO could have made it clear that Ukraine would not join NATO. Former Soviet countries should have taken the Finland approach, (NATO stay out, Russia stay out.) One by one they have been joining, I can see why he felt threatened. Having said that, I think he will now stop at nothing to get Soviet States back. Going via Donbass gave him a way in as they are largely in favour of joining Russia. None of our sanctions will have an effect on him, short of all out war, which I hope won't happen.

How is division between Putin’s enemies going to do anything but help Putin?

If history has taught you anything it is that to defeat such dangerous ideology you must face it with a wall of steel.

It would be interesting to know why, when the powerful countries of NATO are praising Germany Freya5, you continue to attack them.

You condemn the UK for the sanctions imposed yet have not answered the question of just what sanctions should be imposed! Seems you are using this dreadful situation, brought about by a power mad meglomaniac, to carry on your usual attacks on the UKdemocratically elected government. Remember in UK you can say more or less what you want about our politicians, in Russia you risk being poisoned, disappeared or sent to prison

Reading reports from Russia, those interviewed in Moscow are appalled at Putin waging war on Ukraine, this is not what they want.

It was a ridiculous notion that Putin would withdraw or that he would consider listening to anything that would stop him in his tracks regardless of the fact that Ukraine is an independent country. He is a bully.

How Boris Johnson deals with this doesn’t fill me with confidence that he will decide on much tougher sanctions immediately.

Mad or not it doesn't stop him seeing the weaknesses elsewhere. People may die in Ukraine because of decisions make in our countries.

We are at war and the effects will be felt by all of us.

Putin has become completely unhinged I feel. Lately he has distanced himself from everybody, sitting at the end of very long tables or isolated at the front, as if in a world of his own. That distancing says a lot I think. He sees himself as uniquely special and god-like, a very dangerous sign. I really think he has gone insane.

Putin has confirmed what we know, he’s a dangerous megalomaniac. I fear he won’t stop at Ukraine. He want the Soviet Union and it’s hard not to worry he’ll move into other countries along his border.

We have been complacent. Im no war monger but could we defend ourselves? It’s feeling like 1938 in some ways.

As for Corbyn and his gang - I wish they’d defect

The pictures we are seeing is authoritarianism at war with democracy.

Some posters are unbelievable in their insistence on their personal bias. Germany is risking its whole economy. The Telegraph's headline was "Germany has emerged as Vladimir Putin's toughest opponent by shuting down Nord Strom 2"

It is time for those who think it clever just to throw out opinions while not bothering to acquire knowledge to admit what they don't know. They have put the Trumps, the Johnson's and others Putin sees as weak into power and I am prepared to call you out when you continue to do this.

This thread is wrongly headed. It should be "War in Europe!" Until ten years ago I could not have dreamed it would happen but this is what we have. Could the fools, including our present government, please leave the stage. They have "let lose the dogs of war" and poor Ukraine and its brave citizens who stood up for democracy may only be the first to suffer.

Watching Lord Dannatt this morning. His comment was that he is worried that Ukraine haven’t mobilised all their forces.

I imagine Russia can always turn to China for whatever, if sanctions are imposed, who regrettably still supply most of the world anyway. As mentioned up thread they will be sizing up this awful situation with Taiwan in mind
