Why has this twice sacked man been given a Knighthood? I'm not even British and I'm shocked.

Lucca Fri 04-Mar-22 09:04:18

I experienced a definite Victor Meldrew moment reading about this this morning. All that exams fiasco…. All the laptops that never materialised….
Anyone coming along to say this is a justifiable “appointment”??

Urmstongran Fri 04-Mar-22 09:19:39

We were both incredulous when we read about this last night.
He must know where the bodies are buried.
He’s such a shirt button.

Urmstongran Fri 04-Mar-22 09:26:16

Why do we cling to the anachronistic honours system? The knighthoods and peerages are dished out to the rich, the dishonest or just doing your well paid job. They are often a reward for failure. The ex CEO of the post office did a runner when the sub-postmaster scandal began to emerge and was awarded a CBE.

Don't get me started on Phil Green, Fred the shred, John Major, Blair etc. Scrap this nonsense and maybe replace it with a single medal for long-standing public service , open to all.

The whole system is corrupt. If we must have an honours system they should only be given for outstanding public service, given voluntarily.

God knows. The thing that always astonished me is that, every time some cash for honours scandal emerges, people express shock and surprise. All I want to do is say "Well, how did you think it worked?"

mamaa Fri 04-Mar-22 10:16:00

...given for dis-services to education, what a disgrace!

Grany Fri 04-Mar-22 10:18:43

Nonsense What's the point of having a monarchy?

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 04-Mar-22 10:41:49

Unbelievable! The only reason I can think of is that having been Chief Whip, he knows where the bodies are and who buried them.

AGAA4 Fri 04-Mar-22 10:59:31

I wouldn't want to call him 'sir.' There are other names available

trisher Fri 04-Mar-22 11:12:05

It's a whole new level for the Peter principle This leads to Peter's Corollary: "In time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out its duties Having reached that level the individual is then awarded an honour..

Petera Fri 04-Mar-22 11:15:46

Can I just express astonishment in advance for when Chris Grayling gets knighted? I know it hasn't happened yet, but this will save time when it inevitably does.

Urmstongran Fri 04-Mar-22 11:17:50

And Matt Hancock Petera in the fullness of time!
?

Williamson was also sacked by Theresa May after a Whitehall investigation said that he had leaked sensitive information from a meeting of the security council.
Can we stop this ? if so how ?
It is disgraceful.

volver Fri 04-Mar-22 13:06:26

Why does it matter if he gets a knighthood?

It doesn't bring you any more money, it doesn't get you access to the House of Lords, you don't get free entry to any events or clubs...all it does is feed your ego. Only poeple who think a knighthood is a wonderful thing will treat you differently, perhaps deferentially. So given that knighthoods go to people like Williamson, just ignore them. Ignore them all. Stop calling them Sir this and Dame that. They can't lock you up for it.

Excellent thread on twitter by Carol Cadwalldre citing evidence from court and various other stuff that links both Williamson and Johnson to the Russians and the Kremlin - as identified by the FBI.

This is paying Williamson for his silence.

I have read lots of interesting stuff posted by Carole Cadwalader on Twitter, she is being hounded through the courts by the loathsome Aaron Banks. She has uncovered lots of links between Russian money, Brexit, ERG. Banks wife is Russian and interestingly, had an affair with Matt Hancock. Carrie Johnson is up to her neck in it as well.

MaizieD Fri 04-Mar-22 17:17:26

Really! I must have missed that bit.

What is it that is so desperately attractive about Matt Hancock? hmm

Search me.

Actually don’t

GillT57 Fri 04-Mar-22 18:21:08

Heaven only knows what some women find attractive. Johnson anyone? ?. Gavin Williamson looks as if he would burst into tears and look for his mum if a woman made a sexual pass, definitely a touch of the Frank Spencer about him

MawtheMerrier Sat 05-Mar-22 06:25:11

I think Williamson doesn’t even deserve a Blue Peter badge .
His only quality has been consistency- consistently incompetent.
By rewarding him for failure, the honours system has never looked more dishonourable.

varian Sat 05-Mar-22 10:27:05

Unanimous agreement on the subject of Gavin Williamson - very unusual for a N&P thread on Gransnet.

Mollygo Sat 05-Mar-22 11:37:12

Secret headteacher on Twitter suggested all tweeters gave themselves a title!??

My favourite comment is Urmstongran’s
shirtbutton!
