The Justice Secretary told the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme: “If we just open the door, not only will we not benefit the people that we need to, the genuine refugees, but I think we undermine the popular support for this very thing, so I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. We need to make sure that we’re acting for those that need our support.” [Source: Northern Echo]
This appears to have come on the back of France accusing the UK of ‘lack of humanity’ after 150 Ukraine refugees turned away at Calais [Source: Independant]
I know we have a tranche of the zenophobic far-right in this country but surely we would want to support these people?

I cannot imagine what it must be like to flee a war and be turned away from a safe haven.

^Priti Patel was on the news and is proud of herself because the UK Government is the first in the world to set up a scheme like this.
Asked if it was acceptable that around 1 per cent of submitted applications had been granted in the first 48 hours of the visa scheme, she said: “Let’s be clear, this is the first scheme in the world that’s up and running in this short period of time.
according to the Home Office “around 50” visas have been allocated to Ukrainians seeking to move to the UK under the Ukraine Family Scheme as of 10am on Sunday.^
Why does this govt feel constrained to tell us that every thing do is done before anybody else in the world?
The huge difference between the Russian government and the Russian people is reflected here in the gap between the UK government and the majority of the people who never voted for them.

^What a niggardly country we are...^
I don't think we are - the British people have responded generously and would so even more if we had the chance.
There's a big difference between the people of the country and the govt. It's a pity that the latter don't think like the former.
I know I’m in a bad place therefore bad mood but that is just meaningless waffle….
ThePM's sister added her take on our inaction.she says we cant take in women and children they'll be a drain on us because " a lot of them will be widowed" All heart the tories .The biggest "drain" on the UK IS the tories .
Atleast I can say I've never voted for them .

I'm ashamed to be British - so often lately.
I’m ashamed of our government not us as a population

Not sure that introducing a term equated with finance means. You know that the majority of people in this country would welcome these refugees,, and I have not seen reports of anyone not agreeing to let people in, t I Really don’t trust anything that comes from France, they will stir things up with us whenever they can. As for the Independant, owned by Lebedev I see.
I don't understand much of your post, Freya. What term equated with finance? What is the problem?
Having read the post several times, I can only imagine that you are saying you disagree with my post and agree with Patel. If that is what you are saying I believe you are one of a minority, thankfully. It is a generally loud and outspoken, and sometimes threatening minority, but thankfully still comparatively small. But in this country, thankfully, minority views are allowed.
Oh, the irony.

The government seem to equate all "immigrants" with would be terrorists. On the whole I think the public can see that refugees from Ukraine are looking for a safe sanctuary for the duration, but will mostly want to go home as soon as it is safe to do so. Even those with family here will probably have homes and jobs that they would prefer to return to.

The UK so called Government should hang their heads in shame. How can they look at themselves in the mirror? What a disgrace. I hope tomorrow in Parliament all the other parties and Tory backbenchers create an almighty fuss. I’m ashamed.

I feel so proud ........
?
I was being sarcastic - sorry it didn't work!
And I did not know that people of other nationalities were able to be members of the House of Lords!?

I wrote to my MP about this days ago. He's not replied, but then he never does. I hope you all have more success.

By all means *DaisyAnne" but don't expect a proper reply.
I have had a reiteration of the Pritti Patel version of a compassionate response - well short of everything the EU countries, eg Ireland are offering.
That's gone varian. I will report back on any miracles.

A few people seem to have been allowed in having originally been turned away. Perhaps someone more senior has to vet applications and is not always available to do so. Hopefully
any unnecessary bureaucracy will be sorted out as soon as possibleMost other European countries are letting fleeing Ukranians in with no need for visas (i.e an 'application' to enter the country)
The story all over twitter this morning was of the mother with small children who made it to Calais only to be refused passage to the UK and told she would have to go to Paris to get a visa...
If the UK is going to insist on visas they might at least have people in place at the Channel ports and airports to deal with them.
What a niggardly country we are...
This government moves from flat-footed to totally incompetent when it comes to any sort of administration or in-depth care and monitoring. We've seen it with the drop in numbers in the Civil Service and also how they view the work of the scientists who made the vaccine.
(I enjoyed seeing the word "niggardly" make an appearance.)

Ahhh!!! here hear.

I was reading today about Schengen - those countries can accept immigrants without a visa so the process is much simpler.
I think that's right.
From one another, I would have thought Marmite but I would have thought that wouldn't apply to Ukraine. As I understand it the continental European contries just wave the need for them.
I think this is the case but happy to here more detail.
