Sad to hear my favourite store is continuing to trade in Russia.Do you think a boycott will help them change their minds ?

Aveline Tue 08-Mar-22 18:26:44

I'm more than happy to boycott those companies still trading in Russia. There are plenty of other 'treats' and clothes available here because we're a free country -unlike Russia or poor Ukraine!

I can't help wondering whether such boycotting will do much good when Germany (and other countries?) is still paying for so much Russian gas, something they can't stop until they've invested in other sources of energy, which will take years.

I suppose every little helps.

McDonald's closed branches in Russia, now you can go back Maya1

Maya1 Tue 08-Mar-22 18:37:49

Thanks Aquagran. My son just sent me a text.
I'll be back with my granddaughter on Friday after school.
She loves it, l know the food is awful but she has SEN and its one of her favourite places. Last week it had to be softplay and pizza.

baggs everyday Russians might get to wondering what's going wrong if so many businesses and financial services just become unavailable to them , the rouble plummets in value and the economy crashes.
Russia needs a regime change and that can only come from within.

Well done MacDonalds.

I never eat in their restaurants as I don't eat meat and prefer proper food bu they have become very popular in Russia.

I hope that the young Russian guy I saw on tv worrying about not being able to go to MacDonalds where he normally ate EVERY DAY! is now thinking twice about supporting his government and questioning whether his country has actually invaded Ukraine.

Callistemon21 Tue 08-Mar-22 19:05:51

Yes, McDonalds are closing all their restaurants in Russia, so well done them; it is announced as a temporary measure but fair enough.

I hope others who are still shelf-sitting will now be persuaded to close their businesses too.

Amongst the companies still selling in Russia and with no apparent intention to do otherwise are CocaCola, PepsiCola and Estée Lauder. I don’t purchase any of their products but I expect many on GN do.

Jo Malone London is owned by Estée Lauder.

Estée Lauder:
The company’s products are sold in approximately 150 countries and territories under brand names including: Estée Lauder, Aramis, Clinique, Lab Series, Origins, Tommy Hilfiger, M·A·C, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Donna Karan New York, DKNY, Aveda, Jo Malone London, Bumble and bumble, Michael Kors, Darphin Paris, TOM FORD BEAUTY, Smashbox, Ermenegildo Zegna, AERIN, Le Labo, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, GLAMGLOW, KILIAN PARIS, Too Faced and Dr. Jart+, and the DECIEM family of brands, including The Ordinary and NIOD

It is difficult sometimes to know who owns what.

The owner of Uniqlo has defended its decision to keep its Russian shops open, saying that clothing is a "necessity of life".

Uniqlo has 49 stores in Russia and while it will "monitor the situation" it has no plans to suspend trading.

A number of Western firms such as Zara and H&M, have halted operations in Russia because of the war with Ukraine.

But Fast Retailing's founder Tadashi Yanai said Russia's people "have the same right to live as we do".

I hope Uniqlo's owner will be providing necessary clothes free of charge to Ukrainian refugees as they seem t have fled with nothing.

Ive had my own boycott of Costa since before the war. Ever since they brought in disgusting non- dairy milks instead of Alpro. If you look on Costa's Facebook page, you will see what I mean.

I believe Burger King operate in Russia too.

If we boycott Russian oil, gas and any other product it will just go to China and we will buy an alternative. China trades with some of the most despotic regimes, makes no political judgements and will pay in arms or cash paid into whatever account is requested.

We should of course boycott, it won’t make any difference in Ukraine

Bodach Tue 08-Mar-22 21:37:58

Doodledog: “Uniqlo is Japanese, so in NATO, if that makes a difference”

Japan is not a member of NATO; it’s on the other side of the world to the NATO area.

Callistemon21 Tue 08-Mar-22 22:02:00

Japan is not a member of NATO but it is a partner, as are several other countries.

I can still say hand on heart that I have nothing made by the companies listed above as being owned by Estée Lauder.
I heard last night that MacDonalds, CocaCola and another company whose name I can’t recall are to stop operating in/selling to Russia.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 09-Mar-22 09:29:40

The big boycott that would make President Putin sit up and think would be Germany to stop buying Russian gas and oil.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 09-Mar-22 09:36:54

Hell will freeze over first.

Farzanah Wed 09-Mar-22 09:42:48

You are right about multinational companies prestbury, similar to the thread boycotting clothing/goods made in China. There would be very little to buy if we sourced the origin of much of the stuff we purchase.

Farzanah Wed 09-Mar-22 09:43:24

Sorry, or indeed where they trade.

I have.

Hands up, I have some Clinique products and Joe Malone perfume (that bought before the takeover, I think).
Naïvely I thought Clinique was French but it has always been Estee Lauder.

FYI, Uniqlo is a japanese retailer owned by Tadashi Yanai who is the most succesful businessman in Japan.
He also owns other stores one being Helmut Lang.

BlueBelle Wed 09-Mar-22 10:42:54

baggs I m not out in the sticks but I ve never heard of Uniqlo either
What is it? Clothing? Certainly nothing round our way is it a northern store ?

Callistemon21 Wed 09-Mar-22 10:47:30

I only heard about it from GN, Bluebelle!

BlueBelle Wed 09-Mar-22 10:47:34

Varian although not a great fan of McDonald’s they do a lovely vegetarian wrap they are not all bad
I was in Russia around the time the first McDs opened a young lady told me we love it we can’t afford to eat there but we love going to the toilet

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 09-Mar-22 10:51:39

I have heard of Uniqlo but never bought anything from them. I believe they have a shop (maybe several) in London and probably sell online.
