John Sweeney in Ukraine. Kyiv Diary Day 14.

MerylStreep Thu 10-Mar-22 08:26:22

Thank you, Baggs
Very disturbing.

"If we don't stand up for the Ukranians big time......then Putin will take this place and then it will be our turn to face him.

My blood has run cold.

The bombing of innocents in a maternity hospital and then the Russian Ambassador tweeting about chemical weapons. Yesterday surely has to be a turning point.

Baggs Thu 10-Mar-22 16:38:57

Bump

AGAA4 Thu 10-Mar-22 16:48:26

This is very chilling. We just don't know how far Putin will go.

baubles Thu 10-Mar-22 17:01:25

It does feel as though we are on the brink. Very scary.

LauraNorderr Thu 10-Mar-22 17:17:17

It is frightening. I feel so very guilty, hopeless, helpless that we are watching this tragedy unfold before our eyes and do so little to help.
We, the western world are like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Frozen to the spot, so scared of WWIII, terrified of nuclear weapons and concerned about our own future we are allowing that monster in the Kremlin to call all the shots.
We will watch Ukraine crumble, then maybe Moldova, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland. NATO allies who we vow to defend but how? Will we still do anything to avoid a nuclear war? This is where Putins strength lies.
Do we risk it all now or let it play out and lose it all anyway? No answers as far as I can see.

The Russian Embassy to the UK tweeted this morning that the photos of the hospital bombing were fake, that the people we saw suffering were wearing make up to make them look injured. They said the hospital has long been closed and the building is being used by Neo Nazis. Photos of the scene were stamped 'Fake'.

Having committed such an atrocity they then lie to a world that has seen the footage.

Twitter has since taken the posts down.

It is a bit like '1984' from the Russian point of view. The anonymous men in charge headed by Putin tell everybody what to believe and they ahve to beleive it even when the evidence of their own eyes contradicts it.

Apparently the same 'version' is being sold to the Chinese people. How frightening the control over their people these countries have.

MerylStreep Fri 11-Mar-22 11:36:26

China is having a re-think with its support for Russia. They are realising that this could have serious diplomatic repercussions
That’s without bringing trade into the equation.

On the news I heard of two brave people speaking live on Russian TV who tried to tell the truth. They were swiftly silenced - but maybe Russian viewers will learn a lot from what they said and the rapid action to stop them from speaking.
The John Sweeny video is chilling - and though we already knew most of what he says, it is very telling and frightening too.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 11-Mar-22 11:38:49

When Putin took office in Russian in 2000, the first thing he did was to take control of all the media.

He understands the power of the media to keep a compliant populace, but this will only last so long.

Applegran Fri 11-Mar-22 11:39:23

As soon as Putin accuses his opponents of planning some truly terrible action - like using chemical or biological weapons - its a signal that (maybe?) he is planning such action himself.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 11-Mar-22 11:45:24

I have been watching Sweeney since the start of the war. I am sure he is right when he says that Russia will win the war.

If they don’t win it with conventional weapons they will use more lethal ones.

The question is what do we do?

Alioop Fri 11-Mar-22 12:21:42

Putin has us all by the b@#ls and he knows it. No one can do anything to help those poor people, nothing and it makes me so upset watching them begging to close the skies. He will carry on this hateful war and goodness knows where he will go next and do what. Putin's lies, Lavrov spouting his rubbish and some gullible Russians actually believing the clap trap pouring out of them. I despair ?

Is anyone surprised?

I’ve heard more than once now of a Ukrainian (in Ukraine) telling a relative in Russia what’s going on, only to have them deny it utterly - ‘We don’t do that! Russia would never do that!’

And what would we be saying if Johnson convinced us
Look how so many were led by the hand out of EU with a bus decorated in lies You don’t have to look far to see how easy it is to coerce a population Witzend
There are still members on here who think Brexit was the bees knees and that CoviD is all over

That's just absurd. How can anyone compare Brexit with a war? Why do people have such short memories? People were up in arms campaigning for a referendum. I recall Ed Miliband saying he wouldn't want a referendum before the election. Which he lost.

We had a Referendum Party here 20 odd years ago. There has always been Eurosceptics.

I voted to Remain but I have some family and friends who voted to leave. These people were not coerced. They aren't stupid. They aren't racist. They just have different opinions to those of us who wanted to stay. And most of them aren't Conservative voters either.

Covid is not over. It will probably be with us for years. But the acute danger has gone. We have to live with it. If we still have a life to live post WWIII. If that happens.

I wondered how long embittered remainers brought Brexit into the conversation

BBC and all national networks need to get this on national newsfeed on TV /internet everywhere. Many many people do not use Twitter or are glued to their phones 24/7 I was unaware of John Sweeney and his report is so relevant and he's so brave to be putting himself out there for the world to be informed of the truth!

Always knew he was trouble. You only have to look at previous news about him, KGB for a start that’s as bad as the SS.
Evil little man banned people marching for gay pride. Belongs in the past.

Agree absolutely with Laura Norderr. Really heartbreaking to see people being killed indiscriminately and know that we and the rest of the world are standing by and watching.
Also concerned re the lack of truth being told to the Russian people. Listened to a recent episode of the Sunday Sophie Rayworth prog and there was a translation of a Russian TV broadcast detailing how the Ukranians had set fire to the nuclear power plant and it was the Russians who eventually managed to fight their way in and put out the fires to make it safe!
