"Scotland's first minister said she "shares concerns" about what could happen if Nato enforced a no-fly zone by shooting down Russian planes, but said the move should be considered on a "day to day basis"

Nato considering something on a day-to-day basis is a far cry from The First Minister of one devolved country in the UK "sending in their war planes if that’s what she wants."

Of course Nato should carefully consider every possible response to the situation - which could change from one moment to the next, let alone from one day to the next. Giving it serious consideration means they won't act impulsively with a knee-jerk reaction and do something drastic that can't be undone.

Just because I think Nicola Sturgeon is wrong some of the time, it doesn’t mean she is wrong all of the time. However, I think the west needs to act in unison.

Grandstanding - the action of behaving in a showy or ostentatious manner in an attempt to attract favourable attention from spectators or the media.

Gransnetstanding - the action of starting a thread in a manner where the facts are twisted and controversial opinions and prejudices are presented in a provocative way in an attempt to attract unfavourable attention from other posters.

Covid is all but over.

That's interesting because apparently the lowest number of new cases was on 21 February with 38.5k and on 9 March there were 68.3k new cases. Keep up to date!

Covid is all but over.

Not what Dr Jenny Harries is saying, nor the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, from whom I received a letter the other day, advising me that I will probably be having yet another booster, my fifth vaccination.

Scotland's first minister said she "shares concerns" about what could happen if Nato enforced a no-fly zone by shooting down Russian planes, but said the move should be considered on a "day to day basis
Not quite the same!

I am shocked that a woman is telling another woman to “Shut up, woman”, on the day after International Women’s Day. Long live the patriarchy.

Saying measures should be considered is not the same as advocating their immediate adoption.

Mollygo Thu 10-Mar-22 21:04:14

Well Scotland can send their war planes if that’s what she wants. She’s probably feeling safe in the knowledge that Putin would attack London first.
At the moment, no one knows what to do for the best, here, in the US or in Europe, but Nic’s been so quiet for a while that she had to say something.

Oh I'm sure we bless you every day for the weapons of mass desruction based on our doorstep Urmstongran Thats the very weapons the MOD reckon are too dangerous to be based in the soth of England as they would be a serious threat to the people .
Of course siting them here would only mean MOST of our population would be wiped out .there has been a rising number .of calls to get rid of the aging Trident ,its not safe ,the number of alarms that go off in Faslane and Coulport are a testament to that .The MOD call them INCIDENTS with the deterrent ...? Over 550 in the past 5 years Bet your glad you're kids didn't grow up in the shadow of a deterrent that polutes the waters they swim in...or want to and gets licenses for increasing amounts of pollutants
I know you're a SNP bad type BUT if you read what Ms Sturgeon said and actually take it in she didn't advocate a no fly zone as someone above said ..she was just mulling over what COULD be done next ,unlike your own dear leader who doesn't look further than his next soundbite.
Its not JUST defence we need control of its everything ..its OUR country NOT a region of England

Oh good grief, such obvious tactics ?

"Shortbread Senate" is verging on xenophobia.

Still good at the "Copy and Paste" I see Urmstongran

Is Putin across the Atlantic? Has Russia moved then Yammy?

Yammy Thu 10-Mar-22 20:56:26

Well thank goodness she isn’t our Prime Minister then, bad though Boris is.
Does she still want to get rid of the Nuclear bases I wonder?

No, she'll want to hang onto them they are a strategic deterrent now Putin is on a war footing just across the Atlantic from her.
Though are Russian fishing vessels still allowed in Scottish ports?

Urmstongran Thu 10-Mar-22 20:33:36

Thank gawd we did not devolve defence I say.

Zoejory Thu 10-Mar-22 20:31:51

I'm not a fan of Nicola but I'm sure many of us have pondered this.

I just don't see how this war is going to pan out. Do we just sit back and watch Russia annihilate Ukraine? Will they stop there? They will be pretty sure we won't go for the no-fly zone so it is just as possible they might decide to storm their way somewhere else.

I've never voted for Nicola but I'm not sure she's grandstanding. Just mulling it over. Which I'm sure a lot of people are.

There was an article on Wednesday I think where former military chief, General Sir Chris Deverell says it might be necessary. He too is opposed but there may come a time when it has to happen.

Imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine could be necessary as the West faces the choice of fighting President Putin either now or later, a former senior British military chief has said.

Wait and see I suppose.

Urmstongran Thu 10-Mar-22 20:28:21

At least it’s a step on from exonerating witches from 500 years ago which was the important issue of the day at the Shortbread Senate earlier in the week.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 10-Mar-22 20:22:50

Pantglas2 Thu 10-Mar-22 20:22:40

She won’t be alone for long....Drakeford will jump on the bus soon!

Urmstongran Thu 10-Mar-22 20:20:14

Joe Biden won’t. Boris Johnson won’t. Ben Wallace won’t. Nor will, as far as we know, every other leader of a Nato member country. However, it is clear that Nicola Sturgeon just might.

Might do what, you ask? Consider backing a Nato no-fly zone over Ukraine, that’s what. Even if such an action risked a major escalation of the West’s dispute with a nuclear-tipped Russia.

The First Minister thinks that having warplanes, including British ones, taking on, and possibly shooting down, Vladimir Putin’s planes is worth “serious consideration”.

It’s a truly astonishing suggestion that was being described by enemies and one-time supporters alike as another piece of grandstanding by someone who appears to be desperately seeking a niche for herself on the international stage.
