Do you shop at M&S? Please could you stop?

If you do, even if its just for food, please could you stop for a bit. M&S are one of the firms still active in Russia. So they are stil paying taxes there. A Ukranian minister said on QT last night that if you shop there you are providing money to buy bullets that might kill a Ukrainian child.

^I'll apologise for thinking that possibly M&S have a clause in their franchise agreement that prevents the franchisee from using the brand name if it might in some way be brought into disrepute.^ once again trisher HOW do M&S enforce a clause that I've no doubt is in the franchise agreement? You've obviously got the answer to how to compel Russia to enforce an agreement. You know a Russia that is bombing hospitals amongst other residential areas.

Sorry to quote myself, but I'm hoping trisher will be along to inform us exactly how M&S go about enforcing the clause I'm sure they will have in the contract. All franchise contracts contain the clause, it's needed to protect the brand.

I thought people would be interested in this. A graphic from the Ukrainian MP in question listing the companies still trading and paying tax in Russia.

Any guesses about who is missing?

For fairness there are some statements from some of the companies saying what they are doing and how they have actually withdrawn from Russia. I'm just interested in who is not listed...

Pfizer ?. Oh no! When I have my next booster will have to check it’s not Pfizer…….
I fear that ethically we’ll have to cease buying entirely if we delve deeply down the well of many major international companies, and investments too.
Perhaps another thread.

Before we jump to any more conclusions...

Don't boycott Pfizer.

Farzanah Tue 22-Mar-22 13:22:22

That wasn’t meant to be taken seriously volver but just to show how difficult and wrong superficial knowledge about international companies can be when boycotting.
I have no intention of boycotting Pfizer, they may save my life.

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 13:26:18

Sorry Farzanah!

But you just know that somebody will take it all at face value... ??‍♀️

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Mar-22 13:46:36

I am toddling off to my local M & S Food Hall tomorrow for a big shop for things that I prefer from them.

I will also buy flowers for a poorly friend and some house plants for myself, DD and DiL’s

Might even have to buy some new socks and pants on line…

PECS Tue 22-Mar-22 14:17:44

Where there is a will there is a way.
Boycotting goods is something we can all do and it does have an impact. Look at how it brought focus on apartheid in SA.

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 14:25:33

Who should we boycott PECS?

PECS Tue 22-Mar-22 14:36:01

I thought the OP suggested boycotting M&S confused

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 14:37:50

Yes, and about 100 posts have explained why that's not a good idea. confused

(I haven't actually counted smile)

And it shows how ill advised the OP was. I do hope this boycott isn't growing in the real world angry

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 16:32:15

So just for the hell of it I searched for Boycott M&S on twitter.

Found one very angry person saying he was going to boycott M&S and P&O Cruises.

hmm

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Mar-22 16:37:01

Jeez volver P & O cruises is a totally different company to P & O Ferries confused

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 16:51:25

Yup.

Chewbacca Tue 22-Mar-22 16:56:16

How can people be so ill informed about current affairs when there are so many means of accessing information? Why do they run off on a tangent, based on nothing more than a rumour, without at least checking that what they think is happening, does have some basis in fact? confused

volver Tue 22-Mar-22 17:07:43

The logic employed...

Chewbacca Tue 22-Mar-22 17:12:59

grin

Farzanah

First time in my life I’ve been described as right wing. I’m usually criticised for being too far to the left, my friends would fall about laughing.
I can understand why you were moved by the Ukrainian MPs, and did some digging into M&S which convinced you to start this thread.
I have also done some research, and am not convinced that boycotting M&S is on balance either justified, or will be effective.
I think most posting on here are horrified by the carnage they see on our screens, and are doing what they personally and practically can to help towards the humanitarian support for Ukraine.

Trisher didn't do sufficient digging. She made the leap from HSBC being the bank that is used for M & S banking products to HSBC owning M & S.

It's very annoying when some of us take the trouble to check facts and others don't. This isn't aimed at you Farzanah

I have boycotted M&S for years..and survived without their knickers & meal deals!

Rosie51 Wed 23-Mar-22 09:30:07

Is there a reason you've boycotted M&S PECS?

prestbury Wed 23-Mar-22 10:21:03

Must admit I only used M & S for the meal deals, now they have put them up to £12 and no longer including the wine I will support the boycott grin

Farzanah Wed 23-Mar-22 12:01:08

Boycotting not the same as just not going because too expensive or just don’t like the shop.

maddyone Wed 23-Mar-22 14:49:24

Yes of course Farzanah. To boycott is to take a particular action, but to just not use that particular outlet is not. I rarely shop at Waitrose now, not because I’m boycotting them, but because my local store closed (sadly) and so I rarely make the effort to go to Waitrose elsewhere.

PECS Wed 23-Mar-22 17:30:46

Rosie51 Yes there is. They have been strong supporters of Zionism and I am not.
