How many foreign secretaries does it take….?

Nazanin has just pointed out that, since she was imprisoned in Iran the U.K. has had 5 ( (or is it 6?) foreign secretaries and that it shouldn’t have taken so long to secure her release. Is it normal for governments to have so many foreign secretaries in such a short space of time? Is it normal for a failed foreign secretary to then become PM. It could be argued that it’s due to the number of elections we’ve had, but that isn’t normal either. Are we just accepting/becoming complacent with things in politics that are just plain wrong?

Thanks WwMk2 that's the article I was trying to post the link to. Anyone of you critics who think Nazanin isn't grateful enough like to give us your opinion?

From the New Statesman

“A chilling report compiled by independent investigators and seen by the Times revealed last year the detail of Nazanin’s treatment during her detention. She spent almost nine months in solitary confinement. She was bombarded with bright lights and blaring televisions to deprive her of sleep, while enduring daily interrogations of eight to nine hours. She was chained to a bed for seven days, blindfolded and handcuffed, put in stress positions, subject to sensory overload. She was told that she would never see her baby daughter again, that her husband had left her, and threatened that she would be buried alive if she did not cooperate.

And during all of this, she was given repeated assurances from successive foreign secretaries that she would be released, which time and again came to nothing.

No one has any right to tell Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe how she should be feeling now she has finally been released. She lost six of the most precious years of her daughter’s life, and returns home deeply scarred by her experience. The report into her torture revealed she was diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as claustrophobia and insomnia. She doesn’t owe anyone anything –“

I liked Tulip Sadiq's tribute to Richard Ratcliffe - "he has set a high bar for husbands"

Leilla Tue 22-Mar-22 19:04:31

Richard Ratcliffe himself admitted that much of the support for him and the success of the campaign relied on the fact that HE was middle class and white. He likened his accent to that of a BBC presenter.
Had HE been the owner of a kebab shop, then things might have been very different.
His wife's colour and ethnicity had very little bearing.

I agree with these sentiments. We’ve seen this repeated on this site.

The particularly nasty right wing trolls are already treating #NazaninZaghariRatcliffe in exactly the same way they treated Meghan Markle, Emma Raducanu and Kamala Harris.

It’s almost as if they have a problem with successful women who aren’t entirely white.

Pretty vile”

Just glancing at this thread again I've been wondering why nobody has been slapped down for mentioning Meghan Markle or invited a veiled accusation of racism. That must be because nobody has.

However, I didn't have long to wait. grin

And not from a nasty right wing poster. Tut!

Cracking article from Marina Hyde. What a contrast to that ghastly c*ockwomble and patron saint of bigots, Farage, a man who never sees a bandwagon without jumping on it.

Great post he is definitely c..womble not to mention a f…weasel.

Just glad they didn't charge us interest on the debt! Have a feeling it is against their religion.

I wonder if Mr. Ashoori will give a press conference anytime soon?

Well that’s one good thing about the British government. You can call a press conference in order to criticise them safe in the knowledge they won’t murder your family.

Exactly!!!!!!!

"In 1990, Mr Johnson was secretly recorded agreeing to provide Mr Collier’s address to friend Darius Guppy, who wanted to arrange for the journalist to have his ribs cracked in revenge for investigating his activities."

That would have been enough to end any other politicians career. How on earth does Johnson get away with everything?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Mar-22 15:38:16

Marina Hyde is definitely not pulling any punches.

No surprise from me at all that she didn't criticise Iran - she daren't - the authorities know where her family live, and not speaking about her imprisonment and treatment at the hands of the Iranian government is very wise.

Casdon Tue 22-Mar-22 14:29:46

What you said Yammy:

‘Sometimes you have to do things that do not come naturally to you just to appear to be toeing the line.’

I asked you what line you thought she had crossed - assuming that if she wasn’t toeing it she had crossed it to your mind - is that confrontational or just a question?

I still don’t understand what you meant, who did she need to appear to be appeasing?

Iam64 Tue 22-Mar-22 14:12:54

JaneJudgr thanks for your post. Totally agree

JaneJudge Tue 22-Mar-22 14:04:29

I actually find it quite repulsive that someone whose rights have been taken away from her for so long is being told what to do and how to behave. No one at all on here has any idea what she has been through or is going through now. People don't always act or behave in a socially acceptable manner following or during trauma either and if people don't have the capacity to understand that or empathise, I quite frankly pity them.
