Will Putin cut the gas supply?

So now he's threatening to cut our gas supply unless we pay in roubles from tomorrow 1st April. Will he do it and what will the consequences be if he does?

Casdon Thu 31-Mar-22 16:15:09

It’s not our gas supply Chestnut. There’s no direct link between the UK and Russia. It will seriously affect Europe though.

JaneJudge Thu 31-Mar-22 16:16:18

I imagine he will

volver Thu 31-Mar-22 16:17:50

Not ours.
They've agreed to take Euros.
No.
Not applicable.

In that order.

Just to clarify, this is from the UK Government website:

Unlike other countries in Europe, the UK is in no way dependent on Russian gas supply. We meet around half of our annual gas supply through domestic production and the vast majority of imports come from reliable suppliers such as Norway. There are no gas pipelines directly linking the UK with Russia.25 Feb 2022

Hang on Casden. I know Europe has a much higher percentage from Russia but we have some of our gas from them.

Casdon Thu 31-Mar-22 16:25:11

It’s 4% Chestnut. We aren’t dependent on it.

Jaxjacky Thu 31-Mar-22 16:26:05

We imported less that 4% from Russia last year.

Chestnut Thu 31-Mar-22 16:26:11

So if they're accepting euros then what is the fuss about? I've lost the plot.

volver Thu 31-Mar-22 16:30:28

I know I shouldn't but I can't help it...

Don't believe everything you read in the Daily Mail. Even if its in a nice colourful map.

The BBL pipeline exports gas between the UK and the Netherlands.

Zoejory Thu 31-Mar-22 16:32:48

The Guardian appears to think the Germans are mildly concerned

www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/31/germany-braces-for-an-end-to-reliance-on-russian-gas

Chestnut Thu 31-Mar-22 16:35:13

volver don't be so patronising. I certainly don't believe everything that appears in the Daily Mail, nor do I believe everything you say.

volver Thu 31-Mar-22 16:36:19

The first line in the Guardian article:

German chancellor Olaf Scholz said he expects his country will continue to be able to pay for Russian gas in euros from Friday, after Vladimir Putin signed a decree threatening to enforce rouble payments from “unfriendly countries” and raising fears Moscow could be about to throttle gas supplies.

We really need to stop expecting the worst at every turn.

JaneJudge Thu 31-Mar-22 16:36:30

I'm bothered he is threatening Europe. I am bothered about him.

Where did the map come from then?

(Clue - it's the Daily Mail)

Believe me or not, its your prerogative.

Chestnut Thu 31-Mar-22 16:40:17

The BBC (hope that's acceptable to volver) says the EU gets 40% of its gas and 30% of its oil from Russia.

Ah, I see how it works..........
Quote:
The order signed by Mr Putin means foreign buyers of Russian gas will have to open an account at Gazprom bank and transfer euros or US dollars into it.
The bank will then use the currency to buy roubles which will then be used to make the payment for gas.

volver Thu 31-Mar-22 16:44:40

On a serious note. Newspapers and online news sites want to generate clicks. If a headline says that gas has to be paid for in Roubles, that's the bit people remember. If you have to read the article to get to the complicated bit, as Chestnut has copied above, fewer people are going to get there. But we all remember the scary headline.

It worries me, really it does. It worries me how people are being manipulated. Sorry. sad

MerylStreep Thu 31-Mar-22 16:47:08

Sounds like Angela has been on the phone to her old friend ?

Casdon Thu 31-Mar-22 16:48:41

I think Putin is cutting Russia’s nose off to spite its face by doing this, because countries are already looking elsewhere for their gas, and finding alternatives. In the medium term there will be no demand, and Russia will have lost a lucrative market. I feel sorry for the ordinary people of Russia who will be suffering the consequences in the future.

I'm not sure how that will happen due to sanctions.

Germany hasn’t sanctioned the two banks used for paying for its gas supplies from Russia.

MerylStreep Thu 31-Mar-22 17:44:11

This is one of many articles claiming the majority of Russians support Putin.

Seems to me Germany and Italy if they agree to this are financing Putin's war against Ukraine. Trump said the pipeline was a mistake seems he was right.

Thanks GrannyGravy

I know UK firms who did have dealings with Gazprom and Russian banks have suspended operations.
