Are the Royal Family losing their touch?

A couple of weeks ago we had the disastrous PR associated with the Caribbean tour, and now the judgement of the Queen is being questioned, for giving Prince Andrew such a prominent role in the Duke of Edinburgh's memorial service.

The position of the Royal Family depends very strongly on their acceptance by, and the support of, the public both here and overseas; are they losing that?

I thought that Scotland wants to retain the monarchy if it becomes independent.

Aveline Sat 09-Apr-22 12:59:11

Independence is NORMAL to you paddyann. The UK is independent which is absolutely fine by me. Britain is my country. Scotland is part of that.

Anniebach Sat 09-Apr-22 12:21:38

I can understand the Paddyann

paddyann54 Sat 09-Apr-22 11:42:47

The SNP manifesto doesn't contain any mention of being a REPUBLIC ...never has.It always had Independence as its core policy .....LABOUR had Home Rule for Scotland in its manifesto from its inception .
There is still support for the RF in a couple of areas in Scotland ,so it will be a question for another time and is NOT the reason for the Independence movment .We just want control of our own country ...like most other countries have .
Independence is NORMAL

I wouldn't presume.

Callistemon21 Sat 09-Apr-22 11:12:50

Don't take it personally

It's like you blaming Plaid or that nice Welsh Labour leader

volver Sat 09-Apr-22 11:09:29

Callistemon21

I blame the SNP with their republican tendencies.

Actually, I'm not alone being berated and ridiculed daily which is reassuring ?

Just leaving this here... ???

I think we all know that the monarchy retains approval at the present time in the UK. Whenever the Queen goes might be another matter, or not. Who knows, I don’t.

We must be doing something right.

Well, if you will post things that lend themselves to being set about with garden fork.... wink

If you feel have to tell us that the mock up about a Republican vote is fake news, then all is lost. Especially the renown British sense of irony.

Next you'll be telling us Kevin the Carrot can't really fly.

Here we go again!

Anniebach

Seems the republicans can’t run an honest campaign,

They do try it on, don't they
???

Callistemon21 Sat 09-Apr-22 10:56:29

It's not even a very good mock-up of a BBC report!
???

It mentions a poll and shows a picture of a Welsh polling station from a real election.

We all know the difference between a street or internet poll and an election Grany
Pull the other one!

they have staff who read out to them telling them what to say and what to think.

Well of course they do.

The staff who told them it would be a good idea to ride round in the back of a land rover, just like Granny used to do.

JaneJudge Sat 09-Apr-22 10:53:58

My Mum wouldn't let me write to Jimmy Saville, she said she didn't like how he touched the children.

Grany

I'm sure not everyone was taken in by JS

smile

Really? confusedconfused
I don’t recollect voting (of any sort)
Really scraping the barrel Grany

I think it was a poll of about 200 people
They were nearly all carrying Republican placards at the time, so not really representative of the country as a whole.

Actually, it is fake news and not an actual BBC report so a Republican mock-up.

Latest Ipsos poll does show support for th monarchy is declining but a majority is still in favour of retaining th institution:

Ipsos polling conducted at the end of November 2021 shows that three in five (60%) Britons favour Britain remaining a monarchy. Whilst still a majority, this has fallen from three in four (76%) in February 2016 and is the lowest level of support the monarchy has received since the question was first asked in 1993 (the previous low was 65% in 2005).

That, of course, was with the Andrew scandal front page and other negative publicity from other quarters which I shall not name!

I'm sure they do need a bit of coaching about how to behave.
This video isn't a criticism, by the way - I love it! smile
It has softened my hard old heart towards them.

I'm sure they go to bed exhausted after clearing the supper dishes ?

Chestnut some believe the working royals have no need to
read, discuss, make decisions, they have staff who read out to
them telling them what to say and what to think.

Chestnut Sat 09-Apr-22 10:01:58

Surely their engagements are when they take a break from their lives of leisure. Two weeks since their disaster tour and another two weeks before he goes to a gala.
You have no idea what he is doing during that time! There is a lot goes on behind their public profile which may involve their time and commitment.

I really think there might be an army of secretarial & administrative staff including personal assistants who will be doing the heavy work. To attend a meeting to be briefed about the event is hardly exhausting work for a young chap like William or his efficient Aunt.

Some members of the RF are good at their job which is Public Relations.
Ann in particular is good at that, works a room with ease, mostly keeps her nose clean and kept the public on side by being clear, early on, that her children & extended family had no place in the public RF.
On the other hand not all her brothers manage that quite so well .......

MawtheMerrier Sat 09-Apr-22 09:28:33

My reference was to the photograph of Princes William and Charles- not anything to do with JS.
