Are the Royal Family losing their touch?

A couple of weeks ago we had the disastrous PR associated with the Caribbean tour, and now the judgement of the Queen is being questioned, for giving Prince Andrew such a prominent role in the Duke of Edinburgh's memorial service.

The position of the Royal Family depends very strongly on their acceptance by, and the support of, the public both here and overseas; are they losing that?

Good grief, of course they do. So does the lady who breaks in the Queen's shoes and probably even prostitutes. I think prostitution is legal, its the soliciting that illegal. Somebody will know better than me. Anyway, its all completely irrelevant.

I have no idea why the discussion started to be about the morality of inheritance. They can keep all their big houses and whatever, its entirely irrelevant. How much they are worth is entirely irrelevant. How much of it they leave to their kids is entirely irrelevant.

Expecting to have power because your dad did, and having a limousine especially for your priceless hat, that is not irrelevant and is all just a bit weird.

Do traffic wardens get to pass the role down to their children without the need for a selection process?

From now on I hope the Queen leaves all the work stuff to Charles and we get to see her at the light hearted events she enjoys.

So basically retire then? And decide for herself who does all the influencing the politicians stuff?

Think the Queen misjudged public feeling about Andrew accompanying her at the Memorial Service he should have been there but not in such a prominent way. Also that the Queen is reported as not wanting to be seen in public in a wheelchair. A lot of people have no option other than to use a wheelchair and if the Queen does feel like this then what message is she showing to our disabled community.

Anniebach Mon 16-May-22 09:17:12

It’s reported the Queen doesn’t want to use a wheelchair in public ? Was this said by the palace or a royal expert !

Joseanne Mon 16-May-22 09:19:46

The hat in the limousine was very very weird and I'm surprised a traffic warden didn't book it!

We are all masters of our own destiny, that's why I am impatient to let Charles have a go because he might just come up with some radical changes. Or maybe that is the very reason for his mother wanting to hang on?!

Smileless2012 Mon 16-May-22 09:19:47

Perhaps she doesn't want any public appearance where she would have required the use of a wheelchair, to create endless articles and headlines focusing on her health, and why she needed to use one.

I don't understand why anyone would assume this is some kind of intended slur on the disabled community confused.

As opposed to significant discussion about whether it was a poncho, a pashmina or a cardigan...

I don't think its an intentional slur, if its true at all. Which none of us know. But if the Queen thinks being seen in a wheelchair somehow makes her seem a weaker person, what does that say to all the people who have to use wheelchairs, and what we are to think of them. She influences lots of people and how they think.

It says the same as my physiotherapist and enablement team said to me ‘ keep walking until it becomes physically impossible to do so.

I was asked to join the Queen’s pageant as a ‘national treasure’, but I won’t take part in this public relations exercise No thanks, Ma’am. For LGBT campaigners like me, your jubilee is nothing to celebrate

This is a devastating message to the victims of the brutal Al Khalifa dictatorship.

Defend human rights. End sports-washing now.

Perhaps widen your horizons & compare how well off we are compared …. to etc etc
Sadly Never Ever will there be equality,
I have said it before & will say it again in the 50s actual starvation around the world ( but not us) fast forward 2022
Starvation still around the world ,but not us. …

Bridgeit Mon 16-May-22 09:58:56

By that I mean, nothing , most times not even clean water.

volver Mon 16-May-22 09:59:48

Its not about the money. How many times?

Should we just be grateful that we have a gracious RF at the top because at least they aren't turfing us out of our homes to replace us with sheep?

Widen our horizons. What a joke.

Prince William was booed by Liverpool fans at the FA Cup final on Saturday too. I thought that was surprising as I was of the opinion the William was popular. Perhaps people won't want a monarchy after the queen goes. Hope not though.

grannyrebel7 Mon 16-May-22 10:00:41

That not the

It is always about money. Because money or lack of is what makes the difference .

No he wasn't, they were, shamefully, booing the other team.
It was deliberately misreported.

But very unsportsmanlike nonetheless

Look up the amount of people employed, it would be liking closing a factory.

nadateturbe Mon 16-May-22 10:05:54

I think their wealth and how the monarchy achieved it over centuries is relevant to people who don't have enough. And saying other people are rich isn't relevant, we're talking about the Royal Family, for whom we pay.
I think the public are thinking more now about whether we need a monarchy.

I think it's fine if someone doesn't want to be seen in a wheelchair. It's their choice. And I agree with Anniebach...keep mobile as long as possible.

I don't answer silly questions.

Bridgeit Mon 16-May-22 10:07:27

There again it’s our own perception, is it a silly question or only silly to you ?

Callistemon21 Mon 16-May-22 10:11:35

we're talking about the Royal Family, for whom we pay.

About £1.25 per taxpayer per annum

Right, how much would elections for a President cost every four years over 70 years hmm
Plus the upkeep of a Presidency, a new palace or two, fleets of brand new limos, a Firm to keep the whole shebang on the road etc etc .........

At least £1.50 pp pa I reckon
grin

I like to keep a check on my finances, nadateturbe to see if I'm getting value for money!

It’s not about the money, either the cost of the monarchy or the royals personal wealth. volver has said this repeatedly and she’s right. It’s not about the money. It’s about the principle. It’s about whether we are a fully democratic country (we’re not!) it’s about whether we want a country which still adheres to the idea of rank and social class, some at the very top, ie the royals, and some a long way down, ie the people. And in between the lords and ladies, earls and countesses, and so on.
