Will Macron win?
Marine le Pen is surging forward in the polls.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Apr-22 17:53:04

Up to 31 per cent of the French electorate are expected to skip Sunday’s first round vote, a record – either out of apathy or disgust at the candidates on offer.

As one politician quipped recently, The Abstainers are now France’s biggest political party. Sliding turnout is a long-term trend in France, as in many other Western democracies, but it has added an extra jolt of unpredictability to the last days of campaigning.

Well I’m not desperate for any other country to leave the EU vegansrock. Makes no odds to me who stays in the cabal. I’m just grateful WE in the UK voted to leave it.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Apr-22 17:47:42

I agree mokryna about the voting. Himself says the French vote with their hearts in the first round and then with their heads in the second round.

Mamie Sun 10-Apr-22 14:00:16

At 1200 the turnout was 25%, about 3% less than 2017.
I used to be on the local council and able to preside at elections, even the presidential election where I had no vote. Great fun and the duty team in our tiny village always sat down a three course lunch together (not that anyone voted during French lunchtime).

I don't think Marine Le Pen would be good for France I think she'll just stir up culture wars. I know religious symbolism is banned in schools in France in their desire to remain secular, I can understand that, but I read somewhere that she is planning to ban the headscarf in public areas, a step too far imo, what's a headscarf ? it's not a barrier in any way, as maybe the niquab and burkas are perceived to be. In fact at one time back in the '60s they were incredibly fashionable. I do think in their desire to have their immigrant population subscribe to the French way of life, at times they take a sledgehammer to crack a nut in their blanket bans on certain apparel for example, I think that is too draconian. We often have the errors of our colonial past pointed out to us, but it should be remembered that the French as former colonialists haven't always treated their Algerian population who supported them in the Algerian war particularly well, many felt abandoned in the banlieues where they suffered from racist attitudes towards them from the indigenous French population. The other far right candidate Zemmour has pretty similar views as to stirring up anti Muslim sentiments. It does seem therefore that Macron as lukewarm as people may feel about him, would not present the threat to democracy that either of those two would and a worst case scenario that tips any divided nation in to civil war given what's playing out to the east of Europe at the moment would be too horrible to contemplate.

It was a very nice feeling Umstongan.
However, it was forced on me through Brexit, the same for my daughter and many other Brits.. Could be one of the reasons why they are complaining that the immigration has gone up in the last five years.
I hope you are wrong Maudi. It is very worrying how she has changed her speech talk these last few weeks, I just hope people read the pamphlets printed earlier.

I was talking to my s -i-l yesterday, he being French thought that people on the first round, vote for who they would like to win even if it is a lost vote and on the second round the better of the remaining two.

I do prefer they French system, every vote counts for the top job.

Fanny
She was being hounded ? quiet a bit before she left. Shame, I really enjoyed her posts, interesting, fair, witty.

I won money on Trump & Brexit. I haven’t put a lot of money on Le Pen as I don’t know as much about French politics

vegansrock Sun 10-Apr-22 13:25:56

My DS and DiL have voted today in London. They think Macron is still quite popular. Le Pen has softened her stance on lots of things including the euro and wants to reform the EU rather than smash it up. She has some quite leftish views on health care and public services. Brexit voters have been desperate for other countries to leave the EU not sure why, so even if Le Pen wins that won’t happen any time soon.

Maudi Sun 10-Apr-22 12:21:09

Marine Le Pen is offering no income tax for under 30s and lowering the pension age to 60,Macron wants to higher it to 65. I think she will win. I was right about the Brexit vote and Trump first time. Third time lucky. Macron has done Britain no favours in my opinion. Anyway up to the French voters to decide but very interesting.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Apr-22 12:00:16

A nice feeling for you mokryna

The prediction is for a really low turnout - about 30%. Maybe the voting is higher in a fortnight for an either/or candidate?

Jaxjacky Sun 10-Apr-22 11:52:38

Well done mokryna a special moment after so long.

mokryna Sun 10-Apr-22 11:00:45

I have voted for the first time in France ?

FannyCornforth Sun 10-Apr-22 10:47:16

I was surprised to hear that Le Penn had the youth vote this morning.
In fact, it’s why I sought out this thread earlier today (but didn’t post, as I know tit all about French politics!)

FannyCornforth Sun 10-Apr-22 10:44:53

I knew that Josieann had left, but I don’t really know why.
I tried to pm her a few weeks back and it didn’t work.
I was really surprised that she didn’t pm to tell me that she was off, so she must have been very upset about something.
I really hope that she comes back too.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Apr-22 10:12:50

Seems the run off in a fortnight will be between Le Pen and Macron.

Marine Le Pen has been boosted by a shock poll that showed the majority of young people would back her against Emmanuel Macron as France prepares to vote today.

I’m sure though that if Macron wins we won’t hear any UK liberals constantly moaning about how the old have stolen the future of France’s youth, a la Brexit.

Urmstongran Sat 09-Apr-22 06:22:01

I didn’t realise she had left. I miss her posts about the French way of life. She was always articulate and measured in her opinions.

Lucca

I am guessing OP may favour Mme. le Pen ?

By the way where is Josianne ?

She’s left Lucca. I hope she comes back.

GillT57 Fri 08-Apr-22 22:45:07

Macron's may have his problems and obviously doesn't get everything right but Heaven help us all if Le Pen is elected

halfpint1 Fri 08-Apr-22 22:10:04

Macron for me. The man is a first class economist and has 4 years of experience as President behind him.Not the moment to start afresh.
I notice the French residents on here are talking in the same voice.
I think the media is trying to whip up a battle because Macron has been leading all the way.

I have read this too. Marine le Pen is said to have softened her Right wing stance somewhat to appeal more to mainstream voters who aren’t particularly impressed with Macron’s response to the Ukraine crisis.
It does seem as if there may be an appetite for change in France.

I think it is more likely that to appeal to the more gullible right wing voters LePen is back peddling. Hopefully the French are smarter than that and wont believe what is written on the side of a bus

mokryna Fri 08-Apr-22 21:59:31

It will be the first time I can vote! ?

It is very worrying how Lepen has changed her tune these last few weeks to fit in with what the masses want to hear.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 21:30:56

Apparently Le Pen has been told to calm down on the anti-EU and ditching the Euro rhetoric. The French are not ready for this. Although I do remember Macron (pre-Covid) saying he wouldn’t allow a referendum on staying in the EU because he feared France would vote to Leave.

Maudi Fri 08-Apr-22 21:24:11

It could be Frexit if she wins, I think she just might do it. Will watch this one with interest.

varian Fri 08-Apr-22 21:19:41

French fascist Marine le Pen was one of only three foreign politicians who backed brexit .,

The other two were Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
