Will Macron win?
Marine le Pen is surging forward in the polls.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 15:56:33

The first round of the election takes place on Sunday, April 10. The two top candidates then face off against each other in a second round run-off, on Sunday, April 24.

French elections always take place on a Sunday.

I have read this too. Marine le Pen is said to have softened her Right wing stance somewhat to appeal more to mainstream voters who aren’t particularly impressed with Macron’s response to the Ukraine crisis.
It does seem as if there may be an appetite for change in France.

MerylStreep Fri 08-Apr-22 16:53:09

Worth a bet I think ?

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 16:58:58

The polls are showing change could be very near but often the pollsters get it wrong!

But maybe it’s squeaky derrière time in Paris? The bank traders are getting twitchy.

Marine le Pen has definitely come up in the popularity stakes here but I doubt very much that she will win.
That's what I'm telling myself anyway with fingers crossed.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 17:09:57

Nice to hear from French citizens sodapop thank you!

Lucca Fri 08-Apr-22 17:11:06

I am guessing OP may favour Mme. le Pen ?

By the way where is Josianne ?

^ but I doubt very much that she will win. ^

I just said that to DH. he replied "I remember you saying they'd never elect Trump!" Let's hope I'm right this time.

You do all know that Le Pen is a fascist who has taken money from Russia and whose election material features a picture of her shaking hands with Putin? You do all know that, right?

Worth a bet, eh?

Yes that's why I hope she doesn't win. Do you think we're all ignorant?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 08-Apr-22 17:35:47

I have seen two polls one puts Madame Le Pen .5% ahead the other puts Monsieur Macron 4% ahead, which I believe is closer than the last election.

winterwhite Fri 08-Apr-22 17:55:25

Well, Yes thank you, OP, we did most of us know that the French always vote on Sundays (like most of the rest of Europe and very sensible too, IMO) and that round one is this w/e.

The spurt of Mme Le Pen is very worrying.

Fennel Fri 08-Apr-22 18:08:38

The political situation in France isn't comparable to ours here in th UK. In IMHO anyway.
For one thing, there's a lot of support for the Communists in rural areas. France has a relatively large agricultural area.
I'm not sure about the support for the right wing -maybe hankering for the old days of ruling by the pre-revolutionary families.
For another the support for the EU - not always reliable - many voters want to leave.

Fennel Fri 08-Apr-22 18:12:38

ps And the increasing opposition to trouble caused by France's Muslim populaton. Which they brought on themelves with their colonial policies.

Mamie Fri 08-Apr-22 18:17:45

I liked the interview reported where somebody said "we could do worse than Macron". That counts as excessive praise in France. ?
Or as one of my adult students said, "we will moan and complain about him and then we will vote for him".
Round one might show a surge for Le Pen, but my money is on Macron for round 2.

Mamie Fri 08-Apr-22 18:18:37

Fennel the left has fallen apart in this election.

Fennel Fri 08-Apr-22 18:56:00

Yes it looks like it.
And I agree about Macron. And he's goodlooking grin.

Mamie Fri 08-Apr-22 19:05:33

He has also been, in my opinion, a pretty good President in turbulent times. By no means perfect, mistakes made, apologies given, but by and large he has brought confidence and stability.

Coastpath Fri 08-Apr-22 20:56:47

Wasn't she keen on taking France out of NATO? I wonder how the French feel about that and her Russian connections right now?

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 21:05:22

Nah, I have no skin in this game volver just a natural curiosity about our European neighbours.

No need to be so cutting winterwhite surely? Where was the harm in setting the stage for anyone interested enough to read this thread. Maybe the majority know he details, but I just thought perhaps everyone wouldn’t know when Round 2 is scheduled? Just being inclusive.

French fascist Marine le Pen was one of only three foreign politicians who backed brexit .,

The other two were Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Maudi Fri 08-Apr-22 21:24:11

It could be Frexit if she wins, I think she just might do it. Will watch this one with interest.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Apr-22 21:30:56

Apparently Le Pen has been told to calm down on the anti-EU and ditching the Euro rhetoric. The French are not ready for this. Although I do remember Macron (pre-Covid) saying he wouldn’t allow a referendum on staying in the EU because he feared France would vote to Leave.

mokryna Fri 08-Apr-22 21:59:31

It will be the first time I can vote! ?

It is very worrying how Lepen has changed her tune these last few weeks to fit in with what the masses want to hear.
