I thought unitary authorities were councils growstuff, combining the functions of both county and district councils - have I misunderstood?

But they're not part of the County Council, which is what I thought GG13 meant. There aren't any forthcoming County Council elections in Essex. They're unitary authorities. Apart from local agreements, they're no longer part of Essex for political purposes.

On interviewing people for a job would you ask their politics first, and if they were a blue however highly qualified they were immediately dismiss them without consideration.

You're not allowed to ask people about their politics at job interviews. Unless the job is as a political representative in the area.

We have local Council elections in May in this party of Essex, I have received my polling card.

How odd! Southend and Thurrock have elections because they're unitary authorities and no longer part of Essex. The elections are for councillors for the unitary authority, not the council.

Definitely got local council elections, I can assure you I am not imagining my polling card or the placards in peoples front gardens.

Quite honestly, this is Labour's election to lose - the situation is obviously different in Scotland.

I intend to vote for the SNP candidate in my ward, who is an excellent councillor, as well, probably, as another non-Tory. One of the Tories who are standing has been a councillor before, but I have never heard of anything he's done. At the moment I can't bring myself to think of putting a cross (or in this case a number) beside a Tory candidate, however good, although normally I do believe in voting for the candidate, not the party.

But then I know that you’ve got SNP written through you like a stick of rock anyway whereas I vote for the right candidate for my community in local elections. I hear you can get very effective flea treatments by the way. My dogs have even had treatments to prevent them getting fleas.

I was referring to the forthcoming local council elections MaizieD , I will look at the details of what our Conservative Councillor has done, what the council proposes to do on several contentious local planning issues, and who is standing as an Independent against them.

I just cannot see the point of and I will not through my ward under the bus of an unknown quantity of a new councillor just because they are not Conservative.

I honestly don't think there are any Essex County Council elections until 2025. Could be wrong, but I haven't heard anything and I should have done because we don't have a Conservative county councillor and the seat is likely to be hotly contested.

They're still a Tory and they stand with the party that wants to send people to Rwanda and who defends a leader who lies to Parliament.

If someone is standing for elections under the Conservative banner, they are associated with the party as it is today. And I could never in any way support a person or party that is so seriously out of kilter with my values.

Don't care how good they are at getting the potholes filled in.

Maybe they helped secure funding for the local hospice or improvements the local school, or successfully campaigned against a hideous development that none of the locals wanted? But just reduce it to filling in potholes if you will.
