Thank you Paperstream for your sane and so sensible post. I am in despair too about the witch hunt. I recall going to an appointment in lockdown at our local hospital- a whole flood of doctors and nurses came streaming out of the hospital - all in hats, carrying cakes, booze and decorations, laughing joking and entering a room where there was loud music emanating - it was amazing that a doctor was left to see me? The hospital was their place of work as well as perhaps their home if they lived on site - rather like Downing Street- They were breaking the rules or the law if you like - but what if the law is an ass? The pandemic has been horrible for all of us - who could possibly know for certain the best way to deal with it? Luckily for most of us our speed in creating a vaccine was quite outstanding, so not everything was bad. It is so easy to criticise- but I just wonder how any other politicians who are now displaying nauseating self righteousness, would have fared?

I don’t believe you montymops. Staff drinking alcohol is not permitted on NHS premises, and staff caught drinking on duty would be dismissed. I know, I’ve had to dismiss people myself.

Johnson should go. He has hung on trying to ignore what he has done and trying to say that the ukraine situation is why he should stay. Well NO He has lied and cheated everyone. He has no right to stay as pm. Lying to Parliament means resignation is inevitable. Totally unacceptable as any sort of mp and has behaved in a disgraceful manner. His word is not to be trusted by this country or any other and his arrogance to think that he can get away with such behaviour adds to the insult of his appalling self centred attitude. Ukraine shows us what a leader can be, honest, doing the best for his country, putting his country before his own safety and life. Johnson should be ashamed and hasnt even got the guts to go before he is pushed.

He’s now publicly said he’s submitted a letter of no confidence on Johnson. He also didn’t support him over the Owen Paterson affair. Good for him. I’ve already emailed him to thank him.

I give up, I really do. Like I said elsewhere, I'm genuinely starting to think that Boris could slaughter babies in the street and some deluded fools would still support him!

What I define as a party is what I didn't have for a significant birthday because of the lockdown regulations introduced by BJ and Co.
I would have had
"a social gathering of invited guests, typically involving eating, drinking", and hopefully, a birthday cake.

But never mind, Boris and Co had one on my birthday instead. ?? Cheers.

I'm sorry, my post about missing a birthday party seems frivolous, Jubut, but yes, we lost a close friend (and in fact several others) and only her sons were allowed at the funeral.

Where do people get the idea that it is common for people to drink in the workplace? When I passed my first professional exams I was working in a small firm and we went to the local pub at opening time and left at closing time - mid afternoon. Someone went to the little corner shop and bought some bottles of Veuve du Vernay (hated it ever since) which we drank in the office until going home time. That was in 1973 and the one and only time that I've been aware of drinking at work apart from the occasional beer and sandwich lunch provided because we were having to a training course at lunchtime.

There was quite a lot of going to the pub after work and I imagine that's where most groups of colleagues would go. Somehow it seems a bit sneaky to take booze into the office.

Celebrations, such as Christmas or a birthday usually took place in a restaurant or a pub that served food.

I think that Number 10 must hold the record for the number of office parties held in the office.

For everyone who has stood up for Johnson, the bit that does it for me is the day before the Queen was;I turned sat alone at Philips funeral, she was following the rules and did so with dignity while the clowns had a party. We don’t just need a new leader, we need a general elections.

My bugbear with BJ is that he and his government are presiding over very high infection rates from Covid, with about 150 Covid deaths a day, and with absolutely no mitigations in place at all. They seem to think it’s all over, but it isn’t and it makes me very cross and upset.
That is what upsets me most about this government.

I know people who were working in Number 10 in the 2008 financial crisis. No parties, no drinking. It was a crisis and people were expected to work hard without distraction. The PM was Gordon Brown.
The culture comes from the top.

Things have come to a pretty pass when I have to quote Margaret Thatcher to make my point, but here goes;

the first duty of government is to uphold the law. If it tries to bob and weave and duck around that duty when it is inconvenient, if government does that, then so will the governed, and then nothing is safe- not home,not liberty, not life itself

I can assure you that I am very upset by the cavalier attitude to covid, as well. Desperately worried about the future health of our children and grandchildren.

But the partygate issue is badly upsetting me, too The supremacy of the Rule of Law is vital to the safety and security of society and Johnson so blatantly breaking the law has enormous implications.

A minister has just quit. It’s good to see some backbone.

what about the labour leader who was in a pub on lock down was he held to accout no and I saw many people on lockdown shopping with out a mask and people told me they would not wear a mask or have the covid jabs boris did not kill anyone but the general public did so look at the over all picture boris had to run the country ans dont forget all the people cwho got paid 80% of their salary I know people who had to work for 80% of their salary all wake upnthe wat through lockdown and wherte was labour and all the other parties who did nothing during the lockdown you the public need to look at the full picture not the bits you do not like wake up britain and ask your selfes how many times did you and yiur friends break the lockdown rules

Was there a law brought in that colleagues were not to sit in their office grounds together after or during work? Was it law that a person could not sit in their own garden/ office grounds during and after work? This is all the usual nonsense brought by leftie remainers. The police are a disgrace. The uncivil servants are jackals. Boris chaired eight meetings that day- weeks after he nearly died and a pregnant wife/ newborn baby. This is distraction and deflection.

I believe at one point we were definitely not allowed to sit with colleagues outside after work. I waited until I was told I could meet one other person outdoors. I met my daughter in a public park.

Apparently Johnson has apologised and paid his fine, possibly the first of many, which would indicate he won't resign. He gives decent Tories a bad name. I'm sure they must be horrified.

If they are decent, they will call for his resignation…….

It has been pointed out by commentators that Johnson was looking a bit less ebullient than usual yesterday and was reading from a script, presumably put together by his lawyers. If I was Sunak, I would stick it to Johnson and resign, saying that I apologised for being involved in a small birthday celebration, and that I was no longer able to remain part of this dishonest administration. Note, I am not a fan of Sunak, but I am happy to see him bring Johnson down. Grant Schapps or whatever his name is, was pathetic on R4 this morning, if it wasn't so serious it would be laughable. As for Fabricant, are there any GN members who are from his constituency? How do you feel? Proud or repelled?

I saw him mentioned on Twitter a d was convinced his was a parody account, as did many others.?
