This article sets out the law, in a way which doesn't use jargon words. There are explanatory notes after each item. This is a very interesting read, and it is not always the same as is generally thought to be.

The part about exceptions begins down the page a bit, at the heading When is discrimination based on sex and gender reassignment lawful?"^

They've asked Katie Alcock if she'd like to go back Doodledog but somehow, I don't think she will! They've handled it all so badly and their membership has taken quite a battering since it became public that they'd allowed a 58 year old bus driving, weapon toting, dominatrix, trans woman to become a Commissioner for GG, Brownies and Rainbows. But, at least they've learnt that sex and gender are different. wink

The Guiding thing is great news. All the research shows that single sex groups benefit girls, and Girl Guides was somewhere that girls could learn and play without a male gaze on them during their teenage years.

A friend of mine was a Guide Leader for years, and gave up when the new regulations came in. I doubt she'll go back now, but it's a shame that people like her have felt unable to keep it up - they were always short of volunteers when my friend was doing it.

Remember that ship that sailed? wink

Yeah, it's like a child paying a game of control.

If you don't want to join in a conversation by giving an opinion, why bother posting?

My interpretation is they'd be equally happy with the removal of the single sex exemptions, otherwise the simple straightforward answer to my question is no.

My answer is good enough.

OK if you say so, but it didn't answer my question. A bit like Boris who's adept at saying what he wants but doesn't actually answer the question. I shall draw my own conclusions and won't bother again.

Im happy with things as they are now.

Does that mean that you agree that there should be some exemptions, but don't feel that they should be extended?

I'm sure you don't mean to do so, but it does come across as though you are being deliberately vague, for some reason.

Rosie51 Tue 19-Apr-22 23:13:42

The question was would you vote yes or no to the removal of the single sex exemptions?

Still not answering the question then? Why are 'some people' so scared of a yes or no answer? It's unequivocal, no room for doubt.

Not interrogating just trying to get an honest no quibble answer.
If a proposal was made tomorrow to remove the exemptions would you vote yes or no? I'd vote a resounding no.

So what would you do VS? Yes? No? Sit on the fence unable to answer yes or no?

What would you do trisher?
Vote yes? No?
Sit in the fence unable to answer without obfuscation?

Indeed Galaxy; I particularly liked the GG's mealy mouthed statement which, whilst insisting that they will continue to allow boys to join the association has said:

Whilst these are complex and evolving issues, we agree that sex and gender are different,
and will reflect this in the language we use.

Please would someone let the TRAs and their allies know?

Galaxy Tue 19-Apr-22 22:40:16

Thats such good news about girl guiding, those women have gone through hell but I think that organisations will be watching this result and the Maya case and it will make it easier for gender critical women and men to speak out.

Chewbacca Tue 19-Apr-22 22:29:46

As would anybody who wasn't so "open minded" that their brains were falling out.

Another reason to smile!

Girlguiding UK has released a statement saying it has settled its legal case with Katie Alcock.

Katie Alcock and fellow guide leader Helen Watts were expelled from Girlguiding after an investigation into their social-media activity when they raised safeguarding concerns about Girlguiding’s policy of admitting male children and adults as members on the basis of declared female gender identity.

Katie Alcock brought a case for belief discrimination. In its statement, Girlguiding says it recognises that “gender-critical beliefs” are protected under the Equality Act 2010. It says it respects and values the right of girls and volunteers who hold gender-critical beliefs to express those beliefs within their membership.

Maya Forstater added
Katie Alcock and Helen Watts should not have been put through an investigation, and Katie Alcock should not have had to crowdfund for litigation in order to get Girlguiding to accept that the majority of people in this country do not believe that men can turn into women, and the law does not require them to profess that belief. Addressing the mental-health needs of gender-distressed children cannot mean compelling everyone around them to pretend that the material reality of sex can be changed. Any organisation with safeguarding responsibilities must be clear about sex, and there is still a place for single-sex organisations for girls.”

Bravo!

Already answered Rosie and in a way that apparently suits some sort of interogation rather than conversation you will be pleased to see

Why are you feeling interrogated? If people misunderstand a question, and keep answering different ones, is it unreasonable for people to point that out and clarify what the question actually was?

Rosie, I am often a post or two behind, too grin. I am torn between quoting and irritating people who don't like quotes, and not quoting and being out of synch with the rest of the conversation.

Well actually no. I asked would you support or oppose their removal a subtle but important difference.

I wonder if trisher will do likewise?

Anybody got a wall needs head butting down?

Do you like butter.? Some answer… well it’s made from milk isn’t it, and I acknowledge the worth and health benefits that milk is said to have, and I’ve heard it has many uses and I won’t disagree, but……

Do you like butter? Some answer yes I do. Some answer no I don’t. Unequivocal, clear answers. Why use 10 words when many fewer are clearer.

Silly question, but I think it illustrates my point. VS would you support or oppose the removal of the single sex exceptions in the EA? I think we all keep to the law as it stands, it’s a change to the law that I am asking about.
